Book excerpt: No one ever plans to fail in their faith. We all think we'll be the kind of Christian who follows the straight and narrow, ending our days with the relief of knowing we were ultimately a good and faithful servant. With A Christian Survival Guide, Ed Cyzewski steps up to be your trail guide and provide some possible answers. He addresses some of the biggest, toughest questions in Christianity, including: - Disturbing Bible stories - Hell and what it means - Does the Bible have to be "true"? - The question of evil- Money and the church- Evangelizing when no one wants to listen Candid and wry, Cyzewski deals with the tension of hard questions without resorting to empty answers, cliches, relativism, or the smug certainty that can so often drive seekers and strugglers further away. In Bulletproof Faith, Chellew-Hodge reassures gays and lesbians that God loves them just as they were created and teaches them how to stand strong, with compassion and gentleness, against those who condemn them." —Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu "It is an amazing truth that gay and lesbian Christians need to develop a bulletproof faith in order to survive the attack of other Christians. That, however, is the experience of many homosexual persons. Candace Chellew-Hodge has in this book committed herself to the task of making that survival a reality. I salute her and her work." —John Shelby Spong, author, Jesus for the Non-Religious "We know the Religious Right is wrong about same-sex relationships and it's time to move on. Download or read book Survival written by Adam Y. Stern and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2021-03-26 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a world mired in catastrophe, nothing could be more urgent than the question of survival. In this theoretically and methodologically groundbreaking book, Adam Y. Stern calls for a critical reevaluation of survival as a contemporary regime of representation. In Survival, Stern asks what texts, what institutions, and what traditions have made survival a recognizable element of our current political vocabulary. The book begins by suggesting that the interpretive key lies in the discursive prominence of "Jewish survival." Yet the Jewish example, he argues, is less a marker of Jewish history than an index of Christianity's impact on the modern, secular, political imagination. With this inversion, the book repositions Jewish survival as the supplemental effect and mask of a more capacious political theology of Christian survival. The argument proceeds by taking major moments in twentieth-century philosophy, theology, and political theory as occasions for collecting the scattered elements of survival's theological-political archive. Through readings of canonical texts by secular and Jewish thinkers—Hannah Arendt, Walter Benjamin, Franz Rosenzweig, and Sigmund Freud—Stern shows that survival belongs to a history of debates about the sovereignty and subjection of Christ's body. Interrogating survival as a rhetorical formation, the book intervenes in discussions about biopolitics, secularism, political theology, and the philosophy of religion.

Book Survival and Resistance in Evangelical America

Download or read book Survival and Resistance in Evangelical America written by Crawford Gribben and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last thirty years, conservative evangelicals have been moving to the Northwest of the United States, where they hope to resist the impact of secular modernity and to survive the breakdown of society that they anticipate. These believers have often given up on the politics of the Christian Right, adopting strategies of hibernation while developing the communities and institutions from which a new America might one day emerge. Their activity coincides with the promotion by prominent survivalist authors of a program of migration to the "American Redoubt," a region encompassing Idaho, Montana, parts of eastern Washington and Oregon, and Wyoming, as a haven in which to endure hostile social change or natural disaster and in which to build a new social order. These migration movements have independent origins, but they overlap in their influences and aspirations, working in tandem to offer a vision of the present in which Christian values must be defended as American society is rebuilt according to biblical law. This book examines the origins, evolution, and cultural reach of this little-noted migration and considers what it might tell us about the future of American evangelicalism. Drawing on Calvinist theology, the social theory of Christian Reconstruction, and libertarian politics, these believers are projecting significant soft power. Their books are promoted by leading mainstream publishers and listed as New York Times bestsellers. Their strategy is gaining momentum, making an impact in local political and economic life, while being repackaged for a wider audience in publications by a broader coalition of conservative commentators and in American mass culture. This survivalist evangelical subculture recognizes that they have lost the culture war - but another kind of conflict is beginning.

Book 0 Chance of Survival

Download or read book 0 Chance of Survival written by Kayden J. West and published by . This book was released on 2007-12 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You are cordially invited to accompany author Kayden Jayne West on her journey through the valley of the shadow of death. You are invited to share her emotions and inner thoughts as she experiences the effects of the death sentence pronounced upon her unborn grandson to the unparalleled exaltation she enjoys today with that 7 year old miracle child. The journey has been long, the road has been rough, but the battle has been won - proving that with God all things are possible. Kayden was living a typically normal life prior to the start of this journey. The journey begins with the doctor's cold, harsh words stating that the baby had a 0% chance of survival; the amniotic fluid was gone; the pregnancy had to be terminated, the baby's lungs could not develop and would not inflate, but would stick together at birth and the infant would not be viable; the skin would be transparent; the fingers and toes would be webbed; and the hospital saves their beds for mothers whose babies can survive. The journey ends with the prolific words of that 19 ounce, 12 inch baby - now a typical 7 year old, speaking about Gods law. Kayden's experience details her life beyond the everyday routines into the realm of faith and miracles. It allows you to walk with her through the dark times when the doctors said her grandson would not survive and through the triumphant times when God stepped in and said he would live. Kayden's faith has sustained her and she has been rewarded with God's answers many times. She can convey many personal experiences revealing the result of her faith and prayers, such as the time she stayed all night at the hospital and upon getting into her car realized that she was not physically able to drive an hour home and work the next day. She relates how she simply laid her head on the steering wheel and prayed to God - telling him that she was not able to drive home on her own, and if she got there, she would have to have his help. She doesn't really remember the drive home, but she knows it was not her hands guiding the wheel that took her safety home and through the next day at work; or the night she failed to notice her gas light was on and she was miles from the nearest station. Then, as she drove and prayed, she looked down later and the gas light was off and gas tank registered a quarter tank of gas. She knows the power of prayer and the true meaning of faith in God. Through it all, Kayden was never alone. God was always with her and she gives him all the credit for her ability to withstand the long road of fear and stress and never give up. She knows He spared the life of an unborn child who is now an instrument of God has changed the lives of so many people. Let him change your life too.

Book Survival Guide for the Soul

Download or read book Survival Guide for the Soul written by Ken Shigematsu and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE WORD GUILD 2019 CHRISTIAN LIVING BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD "The pages you are about to read may feel like a literal rescue." —Ann Voskamp, New York Times Bestselling author Survival Guide for the Soul is a profound spiritual exploration of God's love—a love that many of us understand intellectually without fully grasping or relying on in our day-to-day experiences—a love that fills our sails with joy and frees us to truly flourish. Many of us are driven by an ambition to accomplish something big outside ourselves. On all sides, we're pressured to achieve—professionally, socially, financially. Even when we're aware of this pressure, it can be hard to escape the vicious circles of accomplishment, frustration, and spiritual burn-out. Drawing on a wide range of sources from Scripture to church history to psychology and modern neuroscience—as well as deeply personal stories from his own life—Ken Shigematsu, recipient of the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal and pastor of Tenth Church in Vancouver, BC, vividly demonstrates how the gospel redeems our desires and reorders our lives. Pastor Shigematsu offers fresh perspective on how certain spiritual practices help orient our lives so that our souls can flourish in the midst of a demanding, competitive society. And he concludes with a liberating and counter-cultural definition of true greatness. If you long to experience a deeper relationship with Christ within the daily pressures to succeed, Survival Guide for the Soul is packed with biblical wisdom and a godly approach to transcend the human tendency to define ourselves by our productivity and success. "Loaded with practical insights and encouraging thoughts, every reader will benefit from Ken's work." —Max Lucado, New York Times Bestselling author

Book The Christian Handbook of Survival

Download or read book The Christian Handbook of Survival written by Silas Marshall and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2016-08-02 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All of the information that you will find in The Christian Handbook of Survival comes out of the pages of your Bible. It's all there in plain sight, but you have to seek it out diligently, by asking God to reveal to you understanding of the letter or road map to success in the Kingdom of God. God wants to approve you, but you must study like you're studying for an exam or test in school. If you don't do your homework and test time comes, you will most likely fail. God is much more forgiving and kind than most professors would be in this case, but God wants you to know who you are, he already knows, he just simply wants you to know who you are. So this book was written to encourage you in your quest for eternal knowledge and to inspire you to pursue God with much passion, as you would if you wanted a husband or wife to live the rest of your lives with. It is with this same passion and desire for the Word of Truth that God delights in when he sees you studying to show yourself approved, a workman unto God, not being ashamed by rightly dividing the Word of Truth.

Book excerpt: A survival story at its best in this vibrantly written, inspirational message of faith, hope, obedience, and revelation from God. The year 2013 was the worst year of my life! I wouldn't wish that kind of agony upon anyone. Everything imaginable was thrown at me; one crisis after another. The bombardment was constant and left no time in between to recover. The physical pain, heartbreak, and grief began taking a toll on me in more ways than one. "Lord, what's going on? Things will turn around, won't they? I will survive all of this, won't I?" I had many questions and knew He had all the answers. I just had to see it through until He was ready to reveal the purpose behind all of the pain. In the meantime, I was in survival mode.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named as a 2020 Book of the Year by The Times Literary Supplement Survival Is a Style, Christian Wiman’s first collection of new poems in six years, may be his best book yet. His many readers will recognize the musical and formal variety, the voice that can be tender and funny, credibly mystical and savagely skeptical. But there are many new notes in this collection as well, including a moving elegy to the poet’s father, sharp observations and distillations of modern American life, and rangy poems that merge and juxtapose different modes of speech and thought. The cumulative effect is extraordinary. Reading Survival Is a Style, one has the sense one is encountering work that will become a permanent part of American literature.
