Download or read book The Handbook on Caribbean Education written by Eleanor J. Blair and published by IAP. This book was released on 2021-03-01 with total page 581 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together leading scholars of Caribbean education from around the world. Schooling continues to hold a special place both as a means to achieve social mobility and as a mechanism for supporting the economy of Caribbean nations. In this book, the Caribbean includes the Greater and Lesser Antilles. The Greater Antilles is made up of the five larger islands (and six countries) of the northern Caribbean, including the Cayman Islands, Cuba, Hispaniola (Haiti and the Dominican Republic), Puerto Rico, and Jamaica. The Lesser Antilles includes the Windward and Leeward Islands which are inclusive of Barbados, St. Vincent, Trinidad and Tobago along with several other islands. Each chapter provides a unique perspective on the various social and cultural issues that define Caribbean education and schooling. The Handbook on Caribbean Education fills a void in the literature and documents the important research being done throughout the Caribbean. Creating a space where Caribbean voices are a part of “international” discussions about 21st century global matters and concerns is an important contribution of this work.
Download or read book Literacy written by S. N. Colamery and published by Nova Biomedical Books. This book was released on 2000 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literacy is defined as the ability to read and write. One would expect that as the world enters the 21st century of the Third Millennium, we wouldn't even need to discuss such a topic. But alas, that is not the case. Even in the United States, the only so-called superpower left standing at the moment, the rate of illiteracy is astonishing. Some cynics say that there is no cause for alarm since the rich elite class needs millions of workers for low-paid jobs and the less educated the better. Others say that the lack of literacy is the fault of the schools and that if we double the pay of the teachers, they will somehow suddenly be interested in teaching. Still others say that with television and VCRs everywhere, who needs to read and write anyway. In this book we have collected citations, sorted and indexed them in a way which we hope will be useful for those seeking further information on this topic. At the beginning, we offer excerpts from some of the fundamental reports summarising the dismal situation.

Download or read book Reference and Information Services written by Richard E. Bopp and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-05-23 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflecting the dramatic changes shaped by rapidly developing technologies over the past six years, this new fourth edition of Reference and Information Services takes the introduction to reference sources and services significantly beyond the content of the first three editions. In Part I, Concepts and Processes, chapters have been revised and updated to reflect new ideas and methods in the provision of reference service in an era when many users have access to the Web. In Part II, Information Sources and Their Use, discussion of each source type has been updated to encompass key resources in print and on the Web, where an increasing number of freely available sources join those purchased or licensed by libraries. A number of new authors are contributors to this new edition, bringing to their chapters their experience as teachers of reference and as practitioners in different types of libraries. Discussions of services in Part I integrate digital reference as appropriate to each topic, such as how to conduct a reference interview online using instant messaging. Boxes interspersed in the text are used to present scenarios for discussion, to highlight key concepts, or to present excerpts from important documents. Discussions of sources in Part II place more emphasis on designing effective search strategies using both print and digital resources. The chapter on selection and evaluation of sources addresses the changing nature of reference collections and how to evaluate new types of sources. Each chapter concludes with an updated list of additional readings to guide further study. A new companion website will provide links to Web-accessible readings and resources as well as additional scenarios for discussion and example search strategies to supplement those presented in the text.

Download or read book Community Based Research in Language Policy and Planning written by Nicholas Faraclas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on a case where community organizing, academic research and governmental responsibility were successfully mobilized and synchronized to bring about change in educational policy and practice. The focus of this book is the methodology implemented and the results obtained over the course of a year-long action research project on language and education in St. Eustatius, one of the islands of the Dutch Caribbean, commissioned by the educational authorities in both St. Eustatius and the European Netherlands. On the island, the language of instruction is Dutch, however, outside of the classroom most students only speak English and an English-lexifier Creole. The research project was set up to address the negative impact on school success of this disparity. It included a community-based sociolinguistic study that actively involved all of the stakeholders in the education system on the island. This was complemented by a multi-pronged set of research strategies, including a language attitude and use survey, a narrative proficiency test, in depth interviews, and a review of the relevant literature. The resulting report and recommendations were accepted by the government, which is now in the process of changing the language of instruction.
