Work is accomplished at the expense of material. The molecules, yes the atoms of the tissues, are constantly wearing out or forming new combinations and their places filled by new ones. This constant loss, the so-called molecular death, is not uniform, either with reference to periods of life, or day by day. In a general way, repair Of waste exceeds loss during the growing years of the organ, ism; say from birth to full maturity, or the age of thirty or perhaps forty; the relation becomes somewhat disturbed towards the end of this period, or the last ten or fifteen years, For a longer or shorter time there is an equilibrium, or if loss exceeds repair it is not appreciable. After this, loss rapidly exceeds repair and soon the mere molecular death becomes a dissolution of the organism, or somatic death. During all these periods, again, the relation of waste and repair depends upon bodily conditions and environment; extreme changes of tem perature, bodily exertion, the occurrence Of disease or accident, all increase, for the time being, the waste, which is to be made good by periods of rest, under normal conditions.
