Book excerpt: This is the story of Huntington Beach surfing legend, Chuck Linnen. Chuck "Surf King" Linnen was born in Long Beach in 1936 and began surfing in the 1950's. He was a finalist at the Oceanside Invitational and the first US Open contest held in Huntington Beach. He became a World Champion finalist at Makaha in 1961 and would go on competing through most of his life. In 2011, Chuck was inducted into both the Huntington Beach Walk of Fame and the Surfer's Hall of Fame. Linnen was among the first wave of California surfers to travel to the North Shore in the early 1960s. He also competed at the 1964 world contest in Peru and was runner-up at the Malibu Masters event in 1973. During his career he has also held the National Scholastic Surfing Association Senior Champion and WSA Grand Master titles. Linnen helped shape the culture and character of Huntington Beach as a mentor and role model to local surfers as well as many champions.

Space for surfing is becoming both increasingly limited and contested-over as a result. This is particularly the case at Huntington Beach, California. This study investigates this problem along with factors that might influence surfer decisions on where to surf and why. The posed hypotheses of this study involve considering social and environmental factors that are contended to have a measurable influence on surfer decision-making, overcrowding at surf breaks, and ultimately the construction of surfing space in Huntington Beach. A survey was conducted and administered to 105 surfers at 5 purposely-selected beach breaks along Huntington Beach. An interview was also conducted with willing participants from the survey participant pool. The results of this study reveal that in addition to social processes, surfers' interactions with the marine environment and learned experiences help to inform the individual on spatial decision-making. Experience gained from being in the water as opposed to visual imagery plays the most significant role in influencing a surfer's conception of the ideal wave shape and, consequently, the decision of where to surf. Space for surfing in Huntington Beach is both highly contested-over and often a scene of conflict as a result, and while localism is evidenced to exist, it is a very infrequent and benign form of the phenomenon. The greater the congregation of surfers in a given area, the more likely it would be that conflicts might arise including more aggressive forms of localism. Surfers who have the most extensive experience in the sport tend not to perceive risks as readily as those with lesser experience and therefore are more likely to ride the largest waves.
