Book Lectures on Curves Surfaces and Projective Varieties

Download or read book Lectures on Curves Surfaces and Projective Varieties written by Mauro Beltrametti and published by European Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2009 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a wide-ranging introduction to algebraic geometry along classical lines. It consists of lectures on topics in classical algebraic geometry, including the basic properties of projective algebraic varieties, linear systems of hypersurfaces, algebraic curves (with special emphasis on rational curves), linear series on algebraic curves, Cremona transformations, rational surfaces, and notable examples of special varieties like the Segre, Grassmann, and Veronese varieties. An integral part and special feature of the presentation is the inclusion of many exercises, not easy to find in the literature and almost all with complete solutions. The text is aimed at students in the last two years of an undergraduate program in mathematics. It contains some rather advanced topics suitable for specialized courses at the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate level, as well as interesting topics for a senior thesis. The prerequisites have been deliberately limited to basic elements of projective geometry and abstract algebra. Thus, for example, some knowledge of the geometry of subspaces and properties of fields is assumed. The book will be welcomed by teachers and students of algebraic geometry who are seeking a clear and panoramic path leading from the basic facts about linear subspaces, conics and quadrics to a systematic discussion of classical algebraic varieties and the tools needed to study them. The text provides a solid foundation for approaching more advanced and abstract literature.

Book Advanced Methods for Geometric Modeling and Numerical Simulation

Download or read book Advanced Methods for Geometric Modeling and Numerical Simulation written by Carlotta Giannelli and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-18 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers selected contributions presented at the INdAM Workshop “DREAMS”, held in Rome, Italy on January 22−26, 2018. Addressing cutting-edge research topics and advances in computer aided geometric design and isogeometric analysis, it covers distinguishing curve/surface constructions and spline models, with a special focus on emerging adaptive spline constructions, fundamental spline theory and related algorithms, as well as various aspects of isogeometric methods, e.g. efficient quadrature rules and spectral analysis for isogeometric B-spline discretizations. Applications in finite element and boundary element methods are also discussed. Given its scope, the book will be of interest to both researchers and graduate students working in these areas.

Book B cklund and Darboux Transformations

Download or read book B cklund and Darboux Transformations written by C. Rogers and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-06-24 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the deep and fascinating connections that exist between a ubiquitous class of physically important waves known as solitons and the theory of transformations of a privileged class of surfaces as they were studied by eminent geometers of the nineteenth century. Thus, nonlinear equations governing soliton propagation and also mathematical descriptions of their remarkable interaction properties are shown to arise naturally out of the classical differential geometry of surfaces and what are termed Bäcklund-Darboux transformations. This text, the first of its kind, is written in a straightforward manner and is punctuated by exercises to test the understanding of the reader. It is suitable for use in higher undergraduate or graduate level courses directed at applied mathematicians or mathematical physics.

Book Discrete Differential Geometry

Download or read book Discrete Differential Geometry written by Alexander I. Bobenko and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2023-09-14 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An emerging field of discrete differential geometry aims at the development of discrete equivalents of notions and methods of classical differential geometry. The latter appears as a limit of a refinement of the discretization. Current interest in discrete differential geometry derives not only from its importance in pure mathematics but also from its applications in computer graphics, theoretical physics, architecture, and numerics. Rather unexpectedly, the very basic structures of discrete differential geometry turn out to be related to the theory of integrable systems. One of the main goals of this book is to reveal this integrable structure of discrete differential geometry. For a given smooth geometry one can suggest many different discretizations. Which one is the best? This book answers this question by providing fundamental discretization principles and applying them to numerous concrete problems. It turns out that intelligent theoretical discretizations are distinguished also by their good performance in applications. The intended audience of this book is threefold. It is a textbook on discrete differential geometry and integrable systems suitable for a one semester graduate course. On the other hand, it is addressed to specialists in geometry and mathematical physics. It reflects the recent progress in discrete differential geometry and contains many original results. The third group of readers at which this book is targeted is formed by specialists in geometry processing, computer graphics, architectural design, numerical simulations, and animation. They may find here answers to the question “How do we discretize differential geometry?” arising in their specific field. Prerequisites for reading this book include standard undergraduate background (calculus and linear algebra). No knowledge of differential geometry is expected, although some familiarity with curves and surfaces can be helpful.
