Book Riemannian Geometry in an Orthogonal Frame

Download or read book Riemannian Geometry in an Orthogonal Frame written by Elie Cartan and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elie Cartan's book Geometry of Riemannian Manifolds (1928) was one of the best introductions to his methods. It was based on lectures given by the author at the Sorbonne in the academic year 1925-26. A modernized and extensively augmented edition appeared in 1946 (2nd printing, 1951, and 3rd printing, 1988). Cartan's lectures in 1926-27 were different -- he introduced exterior forms at the very beginning and used extensively orthonormal frames throughout to investigate the geometry of Riemannian manifolds. In this course he solved a series of problems in Euclidean and non-Euclidean spaces, as well as a series of variational problems on geodesics. The lectures were translated into Russian in the book Riemannian Geometry in an Orthogonal Frame (1960). This book has many innovations, such as the notion of intrinsic normal differentiation and the Gaussian torsion of a submanifold in a Euclidean multidimensional space or in a space of constant curvature, an affine connection defined in a normal fiber bundle of a submanifold, etc. The only book of Elie Cartan that was not available in English, it has now been translated into English by Vladislav V Goldberg, the editor of the Russian edition.

Book Least Squares Orthogonal Distance Fitting of Curves and Surfaces in Space

Download or read book Least Squares Orthogonal Distance Fitting of Curves and Surfaces in Space written by Sung Joon Ahn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-12-07 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the continuing progress of sensor technology, the availability of 3-D cameras is already foreseeable. These cameras are capable of generating a large set of measurement points within a very short time. There are a variety of 3-D camera applications in the fields of robotics, rapid product development and digital factories. In order to not only visualize the point cloud but also to recognize 3-D object models from the point cloud and then further process them in CAD systems, efficient and stable algorithms for 3-D information processing are required. For the automatic segmentation and recognition of such geometric primitives as plane, sphere, cylinder, cone and torus in a 3-D point cloud, efficient software has recently been developed at the Fraunhofer IPA by Sung Joon Ahn. This book describes in detail the complete set of ‘best-?t’ algorithms for general curves and surfaces in space which are employed in the Fraunhofer software.

Book Riemannian Geometry In An Orthogonal Frame

Download or read book Riemannian Geometry In An Orthogonal Frame written by and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001-12-10 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreword by S S Chern In 1926-27, Cartan gave a series of lectures in which he introduced exterior forms at the very beginning and used extensively orthogonal frames throughout to investigate the geometry of Riemannian manifolds. In this course he solved a series of problems in Euclidean and non-Euclidean spaces, as well as a series of variational problems on geodesics. In 1960, Sergei P Finikov translated from French into Russian his notes of these Cartan's lectures and published them as a book entitled Riemannian Geometry in an Orthogonal Frame. This book has many innovations, such as the notion of intrinsic normal differentiation and the Gaussian torsion of a submanifold in a Euclidean multidimensional space or in a space of constant curvature, an affine connection defined in a normal fiber bundle of a submanifold, etc. It has now been translated into English by Vladislav V Goldberg, currently Distinguished Professor of Mathematics at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, USA, who also edited the Russian edition.

Book Geometry of Surfaces

Download or read book Geometry of Surfaces written by Stephen P. Radzevich and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-14 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This updated and expanded edition presents a highly accurate specification for part surface machining. Precise specification reduces the cost of this widely used industrial operation as accurately specified and machined part surfaces do not need to undergo costly final finishing. Dr. Radzevich describes techniques in this volume based primarily on classical differential geometry of surfaces. He then transitions from differential geometry of surfaces to engineering geometry of surfaces, and examines how part surfaces are either machined themselves, or are produced by tools with surfaces that are precisely machined. The book goes on to explain specific methods, such as derivation of planar characteristic curves based on Plücker conoid constructed at a point of the part surface, and that analytical description of part surface is vital for surfaces machined using CNC technology, and especially so for multi-axes NC machines. Providing readers with a powerful tool for analytical description of part surfaces machined on conventional machine tools and numerically controlled machines, this book maximizes understanding on optimal treatment of part surfaces to meet the requirements of today’s high tech industry.

Download or read book Phononic Crystals written by Vincent Laude and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-09-14 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phononic crystals are artificial periodic structures that can alter efficiently the flow of sound, acoustic waves, or elastic waves. They were introduced about twenty years ago and have gained increasing interest since then, both because of their amazing physical properties and because of their potential applications. The topic of phononic crystals stands as the cross-road of physics (condensed matter physics, wave propagation in inhomogeneous and periodic media) and engineering (acoustics, ultrasonics, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering). Phononic crystals cover a wide range of scales, from meter-size periodic structures for sound in air to nanometer-size structures for information processing or thermal phonon control in integrated circuits. Phononic crystals have a definite relation with the topic of photonic crystals in optics. The marriage of phononic and photonic crystals also provides a promising structural basis for enhanced sound and light interaction. As the topic is getting popular, it is nowadays presented and discussed at various international conferences. After the first ten years during which the topic has remained mainly theoretical with a few proof-of-concept demonstrations in the literature, the evolution has been towards applications, instrumentation, and novel designs. The physical explanations for various effects are now well understood and efficient numerical methods and analysis tools have been developed. The book contains a comprehensive set of finite element model (FEM) scripts for solving basic phononic crystal problems. The scripts are short, easy to read, and efficient, allowing the reader to generate for him(her)self band structures for 2D and 3D phononic crystals, to compute Bloch waves, waveguide and cavity modes, and more.

Book Differential Geometry of Curves and Surfaces

Download or read book Differential Geometry of Curves and Surfaces written by Thomas F. Banchoff and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-08-05 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Third edition has been made more accessible by offering more graduated exercise sets. Also, Maple applets replace the Java used in the previous two editions. There are other books with this title, yet none offer integrated technology to assist students in visualizing the concepts. The use of Maple to build in a visual element, often in three dimensions, creates an opportunity for readers, instructors, and students will find compelling.
