Book Surface temperature Measurements of Solid Propellants During Ignition

Download or read book Surface temperature Measurements of Solid Propellants During Ignition written by John A. Keller and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface temperatures were measured on ammonium perchlorate propellants during ignition by convective heating by use of an infrared radiation sensor. This study was conducted in a shocktube apparatus, and air or nitrogen was used for heating the propellant samples. Heat fluxes were in the range of 30 to 80 cal/sq cm/sec. Surface temperature histories measured on propellant samples with smooth blackened surfaces are in good agreement with predictions of a thermal ignition model that considers the key ignition reaction to be localized at the propellant surface. Surface roughness effects and sample transparency to thermal radiation result in difficulties in relating the infrared detector output to surface temperature. (Author).

Book Temperature Measurements Through a Solid Propellant Combustion Wave Using Imbedded Fine Wire Thermocouples

Download or read book Temperature Measurements Through a Solid Propellant Combustion Wave Using Imbedded Fine Wire Thermocouples written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Temperature profile measurements have been measured through the combustion wave of burning solid propellant strands using imbedded fine-wire (75-micron diameter) thermocouples. The techniques necessary to construct, imbed, and measure temperature with this size and type of thermocouple were demonstrated. The experiments were performed at pressures ranging from 100 to 450 psi inside a high-pressure test cell designed for this type of operation. Surface temperature measurements have been estimated from the measured profiles for HMX, AN, and Double-Base propellants. Combustion temperature measurement; Embedding thermocouples; Solid rocket propellants; Ammonium nitrate.

Book Experimental Investigation of the Ignition Process of Solid Propellants in a Practical Motor Configuration

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of the Ignition Process of Solid Propellants in a Practical Motor Configuration written by Robert William Lancaster and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the ignition process of a composite solid propellant (80 wt-% NH4ClO4 plus 20 wt-% P-13 resin and additives was made in a combustion chamber whose configuration resembled that of a practical solid propellant motor. A small gas rocket chamber generated high temperature gaseous products, which in turn supplied the ignition energy to the internal surface of a cylindrical thin-web, case-bonded solid propellant grain. The ignition delay, the time between igntion of the gas igniter and the first ignition of the solid propellant grain, was measured as a function of the temperature, pressure, the chemical reactivity of the hot gases, and the velocity of these gases over the solid propellant surface. The ignition times were measured by means of a strain-gage pressure transducer inserted in the solid propellant motor chambr. (Author).

Book Ignition of Composite Propellants Under Rapid Pressure Loading

Download or read book Ignition of Composite Propellants Under Rapid Pressure Loading written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive theeoretical model for ignition of composite solid propellants was proposed as a framework for formulating ignition models for different propellants under a wide range of operating conditions. Detailed chemical kinetics information for the AP/PBAA propellants was incorporated into the proposed theoretical model for ignition of composite solid propellants, enabling a more complete description of source terms in the gas-phase energy and species equations. Solid-phase energy equations were coded and implemented on a computer. Numerical solutions of the solid-phase subprogram were successfully checked against analytic solutions for some limiting cases. Using actual measured heat flux near the propellant surface as an input to the solid-phase equations, predictions for the ignition delay time were made. Effects of pressurization rate, crack-gap width, and igniter-flame temperature on the ignition of AP-based composite solid propellants located at the tip of an inert crack were studied. The ignition process was observed by using a high-speed camera ( -40,000 pictures/s) and a fast-response photodiode system. Heat flux to the propellant surface was measured with a thin film heat-flux gage. A bright luminous zone behind the reflected compression wave was observed at high pressurization rates. The decrease in ignition delay with increasing pressurization is caused by enhanced heat feedback to the propellant surface at higher pressurization rates.

Book Measurement of Temperature Profiles in Burning Solid Propellant

Download or read book Measurement of Temperature Profiles in Burning Solid Propellant written by Richard C. STRITTMATER and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A technique is presented for synchronizing a high speed motion picture record of a small thermocouple emerging from a burning surface with the temperature record from the thermocouple. Experimental results are presented which show the burning surface temperature of M13 double base propellant to be 535C at 200 psig. A heat loss analysis is presented which indicates that the thermocouples used in this study, and in fact, all thermocouples used in temperature profile measurement in burning solid propellants have given temperatures much too low. Suggestions are made for measurement technique which would yield more accurate results. (Author).
