Book The Surface Texture Answer Book

Download or read book The Surface Texture Answer Book written by Carl Musolff and published by . This book was released on 2021-06-03 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses how to specify, measure, interpret and document surface texture, and how to apply that information to maintain and improve product quality. If you work with surface texture you have probably faced questions such as, "What is filtering?" "What is waviness?" or "Is what I see in my measurement real, or not?" When you're in the thick of diagnosing a manufacturing problem, or when you're facing a product performance issue, you need practical information to solve it. In this book we've put together a series of short essays that address dozens of questions we have addressed in our years in industry. We look at how to specify, measure, interpret and document surface texture. And, we show you how to apply that information to maintain and improve product quality. This book is structured as a series of independent questions and answers, to help you quickly address your immediate measurement challenges. But we hope the hundreds of figures and images will also help you visualize all that is happening at the texture level. Surface texture is more than just numbers from measurement instruments-it's a microscopic world with huge implications for part performance, wear and safety. We hope this book simplifies some of the intricacies of texture analysis and provides you tools to explore and understand your component surfaces. Carl Musolff and Mark Malburg bring over 70+ years of combined experience in surface texture measurement and analysis to the writing of this book.

Book Comprehensive Materials Finishing

Download or read book Comprehensive Materials Finishing written by M.S.J. Hashmi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 1467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finish Manufacturing Processes are those final stage processing techniques which are deployed to bring a product to readiness for marketing and putting in service. Over recent decades a number of finish manufacturing processes have been newly developed by researchers and technologists. Many of these developments have been reported and illustrated in existing literature in a piecemeal manner or in relation only to specific applications. For the first time, Comprehensive Materials Finishing, Three Volume Set integrates a wide body of this knowledge and understanding into a single, comprehensive work. Containing a mixture of review articles, case studies and research findings resulting from R & D activities in industrial and academic domains, this reference work focuses on how some finish manufacturing processes are advantageous for a broad range of technologies. These include applicability, energy and technological costs as well as practicability of implementation. The work covers a wide range of materials such as ferrous, non-ferrous and polymeric materials. There are three main distinct types of finishing processes: Surface Treatment by which the properties of the material are modified without generally changing the physical dimensions of the surface; Finish Machining Processes by which a small layer of material is removed from the surface by various machining processes to render improved surface characteristics; and Surface Coating Processes by which the surface properties are improved by adding fine layer(s) of materials with superior surface characteristics. Each of these primary finishing processes is presented in its own volume for ease of use, making Comprehensive Materials Finishing an essential reference source for researchers and professionals at all career stages in academia and industry. Provides an interdisciplinary focus, allowing readers to become familiar with the broad range of uses for materials finishing Brings together all known research in materials finishing in a single reference for the first time Includes case studies that illustrate theory and show how it is applied in practice

Book Surface Fatigue Lives of Case Carburized Gears With an Improved Surface Finish

Download or read book Surface Fatigue Lives of Case Carburized Gears With an Improved Surface Finish written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous research provides qualitative evidence that an improved surface finish can increase the surface fatigue lives of gears. To quantify the influence of surface roughness on life, a set of AISI 9310 steel gears was provided with a near-mirror finish by superfinishing. The effects of the superfinishing on the quality of the gear tooth surfaces were determined using data from metrology, profilometry, and interferometric microscope inspections. The superfinishing reduced the roughness average by about a factor of 5. The superfinished gears were subjected to surface fatigue testing at 1.71-GPa (248-ksi) Hertz contact stress, and the data were compared with the NASA Glenn gear fatigue data base. The lives of gears with superfinished teeth were about four times greater compared with the lives of gears with ground teeth but with otherwise similar quality.

This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of a series of data-rich handbooks within the Plastics Design Library, Fatigue and Tribological Properties of Plastics and Elastomers provides a comprehensive collection of graphical multipoint data and tabular data covering the fatigue and tribological performance of plastics. The handbook is structured by grouping together plastics of similar polymer types into ten chapters. Each of these chapters is split into two sections: Fatigue Properties and Tribological Properties, and together they provide a compendium of several hundred graphs and charts, supplying the core data needed by engineers and scientists on a day-to-day basis. The data for this third edition has been updated to cover upwards of five years since the previous edition was published, and also includes an entirely new chapter covering sustainable and biodegradable polymers. The book also includes an extensive introductory section covering fatigue, what it is and how it is measured; the fundamentals of tribology; polymer chemistry and plastics composition. These chapters also provide readers with a full understanding of the data section, and how to put it to use as a hard-working information tool.
