The interest and research generated by these occurrences led to the realization that the subject of surface crown pillars is diverse and complex, both in a geomechanical sense and a liability sense. The problems mine operators face do not go away with time and may even worsen, so that the subsequent encroachment by housing developments, schools, highways and railways may prove very risky. This conference provided a forum for the discussion of the short- and long-term behaviour of surface crown pillars, covering investigation of in situ conditions, design methods and consequences, and dealing with abandoned mines and cave-ins.
