Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wide-ranging and beautiful collection of essays from one of world literature’s most important writers. Goenawan Mohamad is one of Indonesia’s foremost public intellectuals, and this translated volume of essays—spanning from 1968 to the present day—demonstrates the breadth of his perceptive and elegant commentary on literature, faith, mythology, politics, and history. Through the worst days of Indonesia's authoritarianism, in the face of the trauma of great violence and the chaos of democratic transition, Goenawan has never lost faith in the act of writing. Many of his essays from In Other Words were first published for Tempo, the Indonesian weekly magazine that he founded in 1971. His writings bring nuance and sympathy to difficult histories, introduce doubt to damaging certainties, and apply clarity of thought and action to times of great upheaval. Activist, journalist, editor, essayist, poet, commentator, theater director, and playwright, Goenawan Mohamad brings an unparalleled and wide-ranging perspective to the world. These essays, translated by his long-time collaborator Jennifer Lindsay, reveal a vision both uniquely Indonesian and completely universal, and indisputably establish him as one of the leading political thinkers and cultural observers in the world today.

Book 365 Proverbs and Proverbial Quotes and Idioms

Download or read book 365 Proverbs and Proverbial Quotes and Idioms written by Aimee Kathartt and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-30 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains Days 101-150 of a journal with 365 proverbs and proverb-like quotes and idioms for you to read every day and then practice their wisdom in your own way. The overall aim of the journal is to keep you focused, in a fun way, on what really matters in your life. We are both individuals and social beings, so the interaction with our peers matters as much as preserving our identity. The images accompanying the bits of timeless wisdom are meant to help you link the literal and metaphorical meanings of the pithy strings of words. Thus, you can further understand the ramifications of LOA, the almighty law governing the whole Universe. (Yes, opposites attract, but like attracts like, since the law of attraction is much more than a simple magnet, with plus attracting minus!) The quotes belong to famous authors, like Shakespeare; having been used alone so many times, they have become emblematic of daily life, regardless of period, hence their proverbial value. Please note that some of these witty sayings contain the original gender references: he. However, they refer to all people and both genders. You can start this 365-day journey at any time. Read the proverb or proverbial quote/idiom of the day and let yourself be fully inspired by it. If its subtle meaning is not very clear to you, feel free to seek more information from external sources. In this way, its true power will penetrate the conscious fabric of your mind, sinking deep down into your subconscious self. Afterward, in the allotted box, write down three words that come to mind in relation to the proverb or quote of the day. Don't interfere in any way with the process of assimilating both the form and the meaning of the proverbs. Their wisdom has passed the test of time - so much so that they have been on the lips of so many generations, mantra-like. Consider them powerful affirmations and let them permeate through your conscious ground. If you feel like it, you can write more than three words to personalize each proverb. In case you find new words or phrases, you can look them up in a dictionary, and then write their meaning in the box. In fact, you can write anything your heart dictates related to each proverb - there's plenty of room in the boxes. Also, you can read the whole journal (or each separate book) like any other book, from beginning to end. Or you can pick any number you want, from 1 to 365 (Book 3, from 101 to 150, or even from 1 to 50), and use only that proverb as the perfect guidance for the day. This journal is yours to play with in any way you like - listen to your heart! Whether you are a language learner and want to practice your English in a fun way, or you are a native speaker, this book may be what you are looking for to preserve your greatness in the midst of your everyday life.

Book Studies in Interactional Linguistics

Download or read book Studies in Interactional Linguistics written by Margret Selting and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current interactional linguistic research appears to be crystallizing around systematic themes, which are all represented in this collection of papers. In the first section, where the relation between language and interaction is viewed from the perspective of language structure, several articles deal with the potential of a single structure for both turn and sequence construction, revealing a play-off between planned and occasioned syntax with potentially far-reaching consequences for language development. Other articles deal with lexical expressions as resources for the conduct of interaction, showing how they are heavily dependent on turn position and sequential context for their meaning potential. In the second section, with a view from the perspective of the interactional order, a systematic focus of interest lies on three different conversational tasks: projecting turn and turn-unit completion, starting up turns with ‘non-beginnings’ and self-repairing. The cross-linguistic studies here all agree that common interactional tasks may well be carried out by quite different linguistic practices and that these practices are dependent to a certain extent on language features which are typologically distinct.

Book Ibn Taymiyya s Theodicy of Perpetual Optimism

Download or read book Ibn Taymiyya s Theodicy of Perpetual Optimism written by Jon Hoover and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-07-30 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Muslim jurist Ibn Taymiyya (d. 1328) is famous for polemic against Islamic philosophy, theology and rationalizing mysticism, but his positive theological contribution has not been well understood. This comprehensive study of Ibn Taymiyya’s theodicy helps to rectify this lack. Exposition and analysis of Ibn Taymiyya’s writings on God’s justice and wise purpose, divine determination and human agency, the problem of evil, and juristic method in theological doctrine show that he articulates a theodicy of optimism in which God in His essence perpetually wills the best possible world from eternity. This sets Ibn Taymiyya’s theodicy apart from Ashʿarī divine voluntarism, the free-will theodicy of the Muʿtazilīs, and the essentially timeless God of other optimists like Ibn Sīnā and Ibn ʿArabī.

Download or read book Terrorism written by Juan Romero and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-03 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book adopts an innovative historical approach to Terrorism, focusing on the weaknesses of terrorist states and organizations as reflected in the ideologies, methodologies and propaganda of Russian populist, National Socialist and Islamic Terrorism. Drawing upon multilingual primary sources, the book challenges the oft repeated claim that the Nazi regime and Islamic State produced propaganda of superior quality, instead arguing that the manipulation of information is the Achilles heel of terrorist organizations. It offers a critical examination of the fears of terrorists themselves, as opposed to the traditional focus on the fear instilled by terrorist organizations in governments and citizens. Taking a multidisciplinary approach and long-term history perspective, the book provides a method for exploring the minds of terrorists and the inner workings of their organizations and traces the evolution of terrorist thought and methodology across time and place. This is the ideal volume for researchers of Terrorism within the fields of History, Politics, Security Studies, Religious Studies and Legal Studies.

Book Modernization of Islam

Download or read book Modernization of Islam written by Narsha Bulgakbaev and published by Noname . This book was released on 2023-11-11 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islam is the most conservative religion in the world, which does not recognize any changes that have happened to mankind since the time of the Prophet Muhammad. War, explosion, hunger, nakedness, refugees, desertion, terrorist attack... but still a religion that does not change. In the heart of Islamic civilization, in the homeland of religion, but in Central Asia and the West, the situation is completely different. In another book about the concept of wrong faith, now liberation. The main reason for modernization is the desire of Muslim countries to reduce the gap in the level of development with developed countries. The question arises: can modernization destroy the primordial system of cultural values of Muslim states, or, on the contrary, will modernization contribute to the favorable development of these countries? In order to answer this question, it is necessary to consider the actual changes taking place in the Muslim world, the consequences of such changes, and to conclude whether they are beneficial or negative in these countries.

This book was released on 2014-10-24 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1143 Robert of Ketton produced the first Latin translation of the Qur’an. This translation, extant in 24 manuscripts, was one of the main ways in which Latin European readers had access to the Muslim holy book. Yet it was not the only means of transmission of Quranic stories and concepts to the Latin world: there were other medieval translations into Latin of the Qur’an and of Christian polemical texts composed in Arabic which transmitted elements of the Qur’an (often in a polemical mode). The essays in this volume examine the range of medieval Latin transmission of the Qur’an and reaction to the Qur’an by concentrating on the manuscript traditions of medieval Qur’an translations and anti-Islamic polemics in Latin. We see how the Arabic text was transmitted and studied in Medieval Europe. We examine the strategies of translators who struggled to find a proper vocabulary and syntax to render Quranic terms into Latin, at times showing miscomprehensions of the text or willful distortions for polemical purposes. These translations and interpretations by Latin authors working primarily in twelfth- and thirteenth-century Spain were the main sources of information about Islam for European scholars until well into the sixteenth century, when they were printed, reused and commented. This volume presents a key assessment of a crucial chapter in European understandings of Islam.
