Book excerpt: Les mousses alvéolaires ont connu un succès grandissant ces dernières années car elles présentent le sérieux avantage d'être très légères, par rapport à leur concurrent direct, le nid d'abeille. L'objectif du travail est de développer la mousse de [beta]-SiC en tant que support de nanostructures, support de catalyseurs mais également en tant que support physique dans le cadre de la filtrationcombustion des particules de suie. La première phase du travail a consisté à développer un nouveau composite alliant les propriétés macroscopiques d'une mousse de [beta]-SiC et un potentiel à l'échelle nanoscopique en faisant croître des nanofibres de carbone sur ces mousses. Ces nanofibres sont ensuite carburées pour obtenir un composite nano/macro de [beta]-SiC Les nouveaux composites nano/macro présentent une importante surface spécifique (60 m2/g) tout en s'affranchissant des problèmes de perte de charge. La seconde phase du travail est d'utiliser la mousse en tant que support de catalyseur dans la réaction de déshydratation du méthanol en diméthyléther. L'étude sur la zéolithe supportée a montré que quelle que soit l'acidité de la zéolithe, cette dernière reste parfaitement active et stable. En outre, la sélectivité vis-à-vis du DME demeure excellente, supérieure à 95%. Les résultats obtenus confirment enfin la forte augmentation de l'activité déshydrogénante sur le catalyseur à base de composite nano-macro. Enfin, la mousse de [beta]-SiC en tant que support physique a été testée dans le cadre de la réduction des émissions de particules d'un moteur Diesel. Les filtres testés présentent une bonne efficacité de filtration avec une faible perte de charge engendrée. Pour les tests sur banc moteur, il apparaît clairement que le système développé au laboratoire présente des avantages qui s'avèrent très intéressants pour l'industrie automobile : tenue mécanique, bonne efficacité de filtration, faible perte de charge.
