Book Postpartum Depression and Anxiety

Download or read book Postpartum Depression and Anxiety written by Pacific Post Partum Support Society and published by . This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revised for the seventh edition, and called a "gem" by Mothering magazine, our book has sold over 30,000 copies to date. This is a practical guide for mothers who are experiencing postpartum depression and anxiety. The book is based on the experiences of thousands of women and describes what has helped them get through this difficult time. From the introduction: The idea for this book came from the realization that many women are suffering from some degree of postpartum depression and that very few will find access to supportive care while going through it. Some of our own mothers are only now feeling safe enough to talk about their experiences and describe how alone and crazy they felt. The material in this book is based on over thirty years of counselling thousands of women with postpartum depression. These women have willingly shared their experiences with each other, and together they have explored what has helped them. It is their knowledge, wisdom, courage and generosity that has made this book possible. Emphasis has been put on those common threads which run through the experience of postpartum depression. The term "perinatal depression" is being used to describe postpartum depression in many newer research, journals and publications. It is an umbrella term that better reflects the fact that symptoms can begin during pregnancy as well as postpartum. In this book we refer to "postpartum depression," which fits under the more general category of "perinatal" symptoms. As you read, keep in mind that you are going to survive this. However hopeless you may feel, try to remember that it will end. Women grow and change as they cope with their depression. After it is all over, many women say they are glad they went through the experience. As one woman said, "I never thought I'd get through it but I did and I feel great. I know much more about myself. Now I enjoy my baby and I feel peaceful."

Book Motherhood and Postnatal Depression

Download or read book Motherhood and Postnatal Depression written by Carolyn Westall and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-21 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globally, postnatal depression (PND) is a growing public health problem. PND affects 10 to 15% of women in Western society. It caused by a combination of biological, psychological and social factors. Two models have attempted to define and explain PND; the biomedical and the sociological models. The traditional biomedical model views PND as a medical condition which implies there is individual pathology and abnormality. Whilst the biomedical model has been the dominant model in treating PND, it has been criticized by feminist sociologists and psychologists for its rigidity in defining and explaining PND. In contrast, the psychosocial model of health acknowledges the biological factors that impact on emotional well-being, but places more emphasis on the personal and social factors that impact on emotional well-being, but places more emphasis on the personal and social factors that contribute to depressive symptoms such as gender, poverty, social disadvantage and social class. The central argument throughout this book is the importance of support before and after the birth for women's emotional well-being. This book will also include women's journeys through pregnancy, childbirth, motherhood, postnatal depression, and resolution. To date, literature has focused on women's lived experiences of PND rather than their personal journeys through pregnancy, childbirth and early motherhood. Additionally, the adjustment to fatherhood has received less attention. For example, little is known about the impact of postnatal depression on the partner, what support partners offer when women with the intention to fill the gap in knowledge of cultural and social issues relating to pregnancy, childbirth, and motherhood for woman who were diagnosed with, and had resolved, PND.

Book One Mom S Journey to Motherhood

Download or read book One Mom S Journey to Motherhood written by Ivy Shih Leung and published by Abbott Press. This book was released on 2011-11-16 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Ivy Shih Leung shares her not-so-perfect road to motherhood in this book that is part memoir and part self-help guide, reflecting lessons learned in the form of helpful tips and information to empower readers on the biological and sociological roots behind postpartum depression (PPD). She also seeks to raise awareness of the myths of motherhood and the stigma of PPD that contribute to the silent suffering of many mothers, as well as the importance of adequate social support in the early postpartum weeks. A culmination of Ivys frightening PPD journey and her emergence from it with a passion to learn more about perinatal mood disorders, this book is fueled with passion to help other women and their families, anger from the unnecessary suffering Ivy went through from the lack of information available to the public about PPD, her doctors ignorance and lack of sensitivity, and public remarks like, There is no such thing as a chemical imbalanceall of which shows theres still a long way to go in terms of educating the public about an illness that is suffered by one in eight new mothers. With side effects that include shame, helplessness, and despair at a time that is supposed to be one of the happiest in a womans life, Ivy wants to help fellow PPD advocates get the message out that PPD is not a mind-over-matter thing, as those who dont know any better tend to believe. PPD is an illness that must be taken seriously. We must all remember that the health of the family unit depends on the mothers well-being. Ivy Shih Leungs voice as a storyteller is strong, loud, and clear. Ivy is a survivor of postpartum depression, and through the written words on each page you can hear her roar. Book Recognising Postnatal Depression

Download or read book Recognising Postnatal Depression written by Andrea Taub-Da Costa and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2012-09-28 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The journey to motherhood is sometimes clouded with unrealistic expectations and society's unfair judgement of any woman who isn't immediately blissfully happy with her new baby. Giving birth is a major life adjustment and rite of passage for all mothers. This book is for anyone who is struggling or has struggled on that journey, who may be grappling with confusion, anxiety, fear or anger. It offers hope, support and comfort and a clear path out of what may feel like a bewildering or overwhelming situation. Postnatal depression affects around 30 per cent of mothers, but partners, children, extended family, friends and colleagues all feel its ripple effect, and many mothers do not know, or do not wish to acknowledge, that this misunderstood illness can be treated just like any other. Written by a medical doctor, a clinical psychologist and their patient, a writer, each author contributes her own personal experience and expertise in the area of postnatal depression to an open and enlightening discussion of just what this illness is, how to recognise it and ways to achieve recovery of body, mind and spirit. They call on health care professionals and society at large to respond timeously, knowledgeably and with empathy to what is, for many mothers, a medical emergency. Women from different walks of life agreed to share with the authors, and now with the reader, their tough yet transformational experiences of postnatal depression, offering hope and encouragement and revealing the power of healing through openness and the telling of their stories.

Depression after childbirth causes emotional pain and suffering that lives side by side with the joy. That is the underlying paradox and it is that paradox that frequently leads to sense of bewilderment and guilt. Through the stories of 24 women trying to negotiate their lives as mothers, Paula Nicolson helps women understand more about the realities of motherhood. Ninety percent of new mothers find themselves in tears and feeling "down" soon after giving birth and one in ten will become depressed during the first year. Postnatal Depression: Facing the paradox of loss, happiness and motherhood shows how better self-knowledge and a greater understanding of PND can help lift the burden and restore self esteem and harmony to mothers and their families.

Book Motherhood in the Face of Trauma

Download or read book Motherhood in the Face of Trauma written by Maria Muzik and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers an overview of the latest research on perinatal adaptation among women who have faced trauma, loss and/or adversity, both in childhood and/or as an adult, and describes the varied trajectories of adaptive and maladaptive coping that follow. The range of outcomes considered span from health-limiting (e.g. mental illness, substance use, unhealthy life style behaviours) to health-promoting (e.g. resilience and posttraumatic growth). These outcomes are examined both in relation to mothers’ experience of motherhood and parenting, and with regard to their children’s lives. Interpersonal trauma, experienced in childhood and/or or adulthood, can have a profound effect on how women experience the transition into motherhood – from pregnancy, to childbirth, and postpartum caregiving. Women across the globe are exposed to high rates of interpersonal violence, and face the physical and emotional consequences of such events. The shift into motherhood is an emotionally evocative period in a woman’s life, entailing not only challenges, but also the potential for healing and growth. Individual chapters will present state-of-the-art research, and will also highlight the voices of women who have personally experienced trauma, illustrating the effects on their experiences as mothers. Throughout the book, the consistent emphasis is on clinical implications and on ways that providers can create a context for healing and growth with the help of current evidence-based and promising treatment methods.
