Download or read book Stemming the Tide written by Committee on Ships'Ballast Operations and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-11-05 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European zebra mussel in the Great Lakes, a toxic Japanese dinoflagellate transferred to Australia--such biologically and economically harmful stowaways have made it imperative to achieve better management of ballast water in ocean-going vessels. Stemming the Tide examines the introduction of nonindigenous species through ballast water discharge. Ballast is any solid or liquid that is taken aboard ship to achieve more controlled and safer operation. This expert volume Assesses current national and international approaches to the problem and makes recommendations for U.S. government agencies, the U.S. maritime industry, and the member states of the International Maritime Organization. Appraises technologies for controlling the transfer of organisms--biocides, filtration, heat treatment, and others --with a view toward developing the most promising methods for shipboard demonstration. Evaluates methods for monitoring the effectiveness of ballast water management in removing unwanted organisms. The book addresses the constraints inherent in ballast water management, notably shipboard ballast treatment and monitoring. Also, the committee outlines efforts to set an acceptable level of risk for species introduction using the techniques of risk analysis. Stemming the Tide will be important to all stakeholders in the issue of unwanted species introduction through ballast discharge: policymakers, port authorities, shippers, ship operators, suppliers to the maritime industry, marine biologists, marine engineers, and environmentalists.

Book Shipping Operations Management

Download or read book Shipping Operations Management written by I.D. Visvikis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-09 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the management of ship operations, an activity that requires integrative knowledge and technical expertise that spans various disciplines. As such, ship operations personnel are expected to be well-versed with aspects of management, economics, engineering, technology and law. Further, ship operations management requires the ability to identify and neutralize threats and to manage risks and make decisions that will optimize costs and contribute to performance improvements. Despite the fundamental nature of ship operations management, no book has ever attempted to reconcile and compile a comprehensive body of knowledge, while pursuing a coherent, structured and systematic approach. This edited volume addresses that fundamental gap in the extant literature, and brings together a wealth of knowledge from experts in their respective fields. Concretely, it explores issues of organization, technical management, crewing and behavioral issues, chartering and post fixture, risk management, finance, legal aspects of international conventions and regulations, attainment of safety, security and marine insurance, as well as ocean governance and sustainability. As such, the book offers a vital reference guide for maritime companies and organizations, while also serving as a teaching supplement in academic and professional maritime programmes.

Book Scheduling a Three Supply Ship Replenishment Operation

Download or read book Scheduling a Three Supply Ship Replenishment Operation written by John McKee Huling (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The operation of replenishment at sea is investigated for three supply ships and L combatants using queueing theory concepts and a random walk model in three dimensions. The distribution for total replenishment time given the initial number of combatants to be replenished by each supply ship and a specified cyclic order of replenishment is expressed in terms of its Laplace transform under the assumption of independent, exponential service times for each supply vessel. A method for counting all possible sequences of replenishment is not found, but some preliminary counting techniques are developed which may be useful in its eventual determination. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: · Merchant shipping remains the largest carrier of freight throughout recorded history due to the economic advantages involved. Optimum management of the global propulsion power may result in large cut down of marine fuel grades, which will in turn benefit environment and the economics of the shipping community. · Although, water transport is still the most efficient mode (small ratio of CO2 per cargo ton per mile) the aim is for vessel's further energy efficiency optimization, bunker minimization and in turn reduction of CO2, NOx, SOx. An energy efficiency management scheme cannot be sustained unless a meaningful and practical mode of monitoring is applied.
