Demographic projections indicate that around 225 million people in LDCs will be entering the labour force until 2030. Hence, creating sufficient and decent employment opportunities for all will be a real challenge. However, recent experience shows that the link between growth and employment in LDCs is not automatic. It also reviews and analyses recent labour market performance of the LDCs, compares it with the future needs in relation to job creation, and elaborates concrete policy recommendations for growth with employment.

It is also one of the most inadequately realised goals of development, with the average education of global adults remaining essentially at primary levels. Advancing Global Education is the second in a series of volumes that explores prospects for human development-how development appears to be unfolding globally and locally, how we would like it to evolve, and how better to assure that we move it in desired directions. The first volume addressed the reduction of global poverty. The third will turn to the enhancement of global health. Advancing Global Education presents the most extensive set of forecasts of global education participation and attainment levels to date-providing and exploring a massive, multi-issue database and proposing a scenario for accelerating educational attainment throughout major world regions and 183 countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In light of the current economic difficulties facing traditional development partners and the non-sustainable and non-inclusive nature of performance of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) over the last decade, LDC governments need new development paths to tap into dynamic growth poles in the South. This publication explores the role of South-South cooperation and regional developmentalism, and finds that, in order to benefit from evolving South-South relations, LDCs need to transform into Catalytic Development States that are highly sensitive to LDC vulnerabilities and offer new policy agendas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1967, this book examines the major problems of trade and aid policy posed for the developed countries by the UN Conference on Trade and Development in 1964. Johnson surveys the political and economic setting of the Conference; international aspects of economic development; trade policy to promote development; possible new international arrangements for trade in primary products; and the possibilities offered by international monetary reform for benefitting less developed countries. Book Policy Externalities And International Trade Agreements

Download or read book Policy Externalities And International Trade Agreements written by Limao Nuno and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2018-09-19 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book Policy Externalities and International Trade Agreements is a selection of published articles examining how policy externalities motivate and can be addressed by international trading institutions. The studies provide groundbreaking evidence of the role of international market power and policy uncertainty as motives for trade agreements and on the potential clash between preferential trade liberalization (e.g. European Union, NAFTA) and multilateral agreements (WTO). The studies presented in this book not only identify and estimate how different policies interact with each other and across agreements, but also examine how international trading institutions can be used to limit redistribution towards special interest groups and enforce better cooperation across issues, such as labor and the environment, and between developing and developed countries.

Book Economic Policies of the New Thinking in Economics

Download or read book Economic Policies of the New Thinking in Economics written by Philip Arestis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-20 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The financial crisis and the ‘great recession’ have generated the need for new thinking in economics and for new economic policies to secure sustainable and equitable economic development. The new thinking in economics is an interdisciplinary approach to economic problems that acknowledges and respects insights and analyses from other disciplines, and recognizes complexity and evolutionary theory as relevant for understanding economic systems and economic behaviour. New Economics is concerned with institutional behaviour, expectations and uncertainty as opposed to traditional economics with its emphasis on equilibrium, mathematical formalism and deterministic solutions. With the financial crisis brought on by the unrestrained pursuit of personal and corporate profit, sanctioned by traditional economics, this is an opportune moment to establish a new way of approaching economic understanding based on new economic theory. It is also a good time to instigate new ideas on the approach to economic policy across a wide range of areas, such as macroeconomic and global governance, employment and unemployment, social security and pensions. This book is devoted to developing economic policies from the new thinking. It was originally published as a special issue of the International Review of Applied Economics.
