Book Irrigation in the United States

Download or read book Irrigation in the United States written by Dallas M. Lea and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extract: Beginning with the Mormon colonization of Salt Lake Valley, Utah, in 1847, irrigation has been a significant part of agriculture in the United States. Most of the Nation's irrigated acreage has always been located in the arid and semiarid regions of the West, but in recent years supplemental irrigation has been steadily increasing in the humid East. More farmers in eastern regions are finding that supplemental irrigation is profitable, especially as insurance against crop failures in drought years, and also by increasing average yields. Water supply is apparently the principal constraint to irrigation expansion in the West. Conservation of available water resources is apparently the best measure for expanding irrigation there.

This book addresses the proven technology which has influenced water development in the past, those still effective in shaping its course and the emerging technology of today. The heart of this study is in the thirty-one case descriptions selected from both the emerging and proven technology. Each case description has been treated as briefly as is consistent with clarity, and nontechnical language has been used wherever possible. This title will help to introduce engineers and physical scientists to the administrative problems and opportunities which stem from their works.

Book Saline and Alkaline Soils in Latin America

Download or read book Saline and Alkaline Soils in Latin America written by Edith Taleisnik and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-26 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first comprehensive overview of saline and alkaline soils in Latin America, known for having one of the most extensive surface of salt-affected soils in the world. It is organized along two main axes: soils and vegetation. The book discusses the occurrence of such soils in the region, focusing mainly in management strategies for their sustainable use, and it presents accounts of natural vegetation and crops in the various environments of the region. Social impacts of such conditions and ongoing projects to overcome them are considered. Likewise, the book highlights physiological mechanisms that are responsible for the negative effects these soils exert on crops and forest resources and determine vegetation distribution in them. Plant breeding challenges and new perspectives for such environments are discussed. Technologies such as irrigation and drainage are included. The readership includes soil and plant scientists, as well as policy makers.
