Book excerpt: Jalal has been able to collect the inputs of many individuals working within the legal systems of nine jurisdictions (all member states of the University of the South Pacific) in the region. This book represents an important collection of authorities and information in the region. The information is presented as simply as possible with an attempt to explain legal concepts and ideas in non-technical language. Although this is not an academic text and is not aimed at an academic audience, many will find it a useful point of reference for case examples and some legislative provisions. Its main objective, however, is to politicize the position of women in the Pacific. Ms Jalal's work is driven by her "anger at the injustice that is caused to women in the Pacific, because they are women" (Preface ix) and in her introductory chapter she argues that "Pacific Island feminism" will pave the way for equality for women in the region.

It explores issues related to women’s negotiations with the patriarchal underpinnings of GBV; the role of the law and history in the perpetuation of GBV; the complementary role of culture and faith to legal protection against GBV, and access to justice for women and girls. International instruments on human rights, the environment and sustainable development reaffirm the principle of non-discrimination on the basis of sex or gender. Yet women often face gendered obstacles in realizing their rights and feeding their families. The right to an adequate standard of living, including adequate food, may thus not be fulfilled. These obstacles may stem from directly or indirectly discriminatory norms or from entrenched socio-cultural practices, or both. This study analyses the gender dimension of agriculture-related legislation in a selection of different countries around the world, examining the legal status of women in three key areas: rights to land and other natural resources; rights of women agricultural workers; and rights concerning women's agricultural self-employment activities, ranging from women's status in rural cooperatives to their access to credit, training and extension services.
