Book Supersymmetry Search in Multilepton Final States with Taus Using the CMS Detector at the LHC

Download or read book Supersymmetry Search in Multilepton Final States with Taus Using the CMS Detector at the LHC written by Sho Maruyama and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents a search for SUperSYmmetry (SUSY) in multilepton final states with a data set corresponding to 34.9 pb−1 collected in 2010 with the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) running at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The analysis channels contain combinations of at least three leptons: electrons, muons, and hadronically decaying taus that are reconstructed using a particle-flow technique. The minimal SUperGRAvity (mSUGRA) model and co-Next-to-the-Lightest-SUSY-Particle (co-NLSP) scenario in the Gauge-Mediated SUSY Breaking (GMSB) model are considered. To identify SUSY signal events, signal and Standard Model (SM) background processes are studied with full detector simulation and systematics uncertainties are evaluated. Relevant SM backgrounds include Z boson + jets, diboson, tt, and QCD processes. The separation between the signal and background is performed using a cut-based selection. Good agreement between simulated samples and data is obtained, in particular for the significant Z boson + jets background. With the chosen event selection, we observe three events in data, consistent with the SM predic- tion within statistical fluctuations. Therefore, we set exclusion limits on both models using Bayesian statistics. For the SUSY parameters of m0 = 60 GeV, A0 = 0, tan[beta] = 3, and [mu]> 0, chargino masses below 163 GeV are excluded in the mSUGRA model. In GMSB, gluino masses up to 1040 GeV are excluded in co-NLSP scenario.

Book Search for Supersymmetry in the Jets Met TAUS Final State Using the CMS Detector at the LHC

This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation results are presented from a search for the pair production of heavy colored particles (gluinos, squarks) in R-parity conserving supersymmetric models, in which the lightest supersymmetric particle is a stable and neutral object. The search was performed for events with at least two tau leptons, two highly energetic jets and large missing transverse momentum in the final state on a data sample of proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV. The data sample was collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2011, and it corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5fb -1. The tau isolation variable was optimized for this search. The number of events corresponding to standard model processes in the final selection was estimated to be 7.49 plus - minus 0.74 using background estimation techniques based on data. Nine observed events are found to be in agreement with the standard model prediction, and exclusion limits on gluino mass are obtained in the context of supersymmetric models at the 95% confidence level. Download or read book Search for Supersymmetry in Hadronic Final States written by Hannsjörg Artur Weber and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-11 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The project reported here was a search for new super symmetric particles in proton-proton collisions at the LHC. It has produced some of the world’s best exclusion limits on such new particles. Furthermore, dedicated simulation studies and data analyses have also yielded essential input to the upgrade activities of the CMS collaboration, both for the Phase-1 pixel detector upgrade and for the R&D studies in pursuit of a Phase-2 end cap calorimeter upgrade.

Book Search for Compressed Supersymmetry at the LHC in Final States with One Hadronic Tau and One Energetic Jet

Download or read book Search for Compressed Supersymmetry at the LHC in Final States with One Hadronic Tau and One Energetic Jet written by Manuel Alejandro Segura Delgado and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present an experimental search of supersymmetry (SUSY) in compressed mass spectra scenarios with scalar taus, using data from proton-proton (pp) collisions in the Large Hadron Collider, LHC, at CERN laboratory, at E=13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment in 2016 and 2017. Compressed mass spectra scenarios, where the mass difference between the lightest neutralino and the stau is small, have been proposed in several models in order to incorporate coannihilation as a mechanism to obtain a relic dark matter density consistent with that predicted by astronomy. The compressed mass region in SUSY is challenging to probe experimentally. We focus on a final state containing exactly one tau lepton, with low transverse momentum, that has decayed hadronically, at least one initial state radiation jet (ISR) with high momentum, and a large imbalance of missing transverse momentum. An integrated luminosity of 77.2 fb-1 of pp data was used for this analysis. The data was found to be in agreement with respect to the expected background. Therefore, upper limits on the production cross-section as function of chargino mass were set, excluding masses up to 290 GeV for a mass splitting of delta m(stau-neutralino) = 50 GeV. The limits set on this search, constitute the most stringent limits today for all stau's related searches.

Book Searches for Supersymmetric Particles in Final States with Multiple Top and Bottom Quarks with the Atlas Detector

Download or read book Searches for Supersymmetric Particles in Final States with Multiple Top and Bottom Quarks with the Atlas Detector written by Chiara Rizzi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This PhD thesis documents two of the highest-profile searches for supersymmetry performed at the ATLAS experiment using up to 80/fb of proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV delivered by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) during its Run 2 (2015-2018). The signals of interest feature a high multiplicity of jets originating from the hadronisation of b-quarks and large missing transverse momentum, which constitutes one of the most promising final state signatures for discovery of new phenomena at the LHC. The first search is focused on the strong production of a pair of gluinos, with each gluino decaying into a neutralino and a top-antitop-quark pair or a bottom-antibottom-quark pair. The second search targets the pair production of higgsinos, with each higgsino decaying into a gravitino and a Higgs boson, which in turn is required to decay into a bottom-antibottom-quark pair. Both searches employ state-of-the-art experimental techniques and analysis strategies at the LHC, resulting in some of the most restrictive bounds available to date on the masses of the gluino, neutralino, and higgsino in the context of the models explored.

Book Measurement of WWW Production and Search for Supersymmetric Particles in Multi lepton Final States in Pp Collisions at square Root 8

Download or read book Measurement of WWW Production and Search for Supersymmetric Particles in Multi lepton Final States in Pp Collisions at square Root 8 written by Martina Javůrková and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The results presented in this thesis use the full dataset collected in 2012 by the ATLAS experiment from the LHC proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb^(−1). The first part is devoted to the search for the WWW production in the decay channel where each W boson decays leptonically (excluding leptonic tau decays). Upper limits are placed on the production cross-section in the fiducial phase space. The results are also interpreted in terms of the total cross-section when combined together with the semi-leptonic decay channel. In addition, limits on anomalous quartic gauge boson couplings in an effective field theory approach are extracted. The second part presents a search for supersymmetry in events with multiple jets, two leptons of identical charges or three leptons (electrons or muons). The absence of any excess in the signal regions with respect to the Standard Model expectations is interpreted in terms of limits in the parameter space of 14 supersymmetric models and one mUED model

Book Search for Supersymmetry in the All hadronic Final State Using Top Quark Tagging in Pp Collisions at Sqrt s

Download or read book Search for Supersymmetry in the All hadronic Final State Using Top Quark Tagging in Pp Collisions at Sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search is presented for supersymmetry in all-hadronic events with missing transverse momentum based on tagging of top quarks. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 inverse femtobarns of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. Search regions are defined using the properties of reconstructed jets, the presence of bottom and top quark candidates, and an imbalance in transverse momentum. With no statistically significant excess of events observed beyond the expected contributions from the standard model, we set exclusion limits at 95% confidence level on the masses of new particles in the context of simplified models of direct and gluino-mediated top squark production. For direct top squark production with decays to a top quark and a neutralino, top squark masses up to 740 GeV and neutralino masses up to 240 GeV are excluded. Gluino masses up to 1550 GeV and neutralino masses up to 900 GeV are excluded for models of gluino pair production where each gluino decays to a top-antitop quark pair and a neutralino.

Book Search for Supersymmetry in pp Collisions at s 8 TeV with a Photon Lepton and Missing Transverse Energy

Download or read book Search for Supersymmetry in pp Collisions at s 8 TeV with a Photon Lepton and Missing Transverse Energy written by Yutaro Iiyama and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-06-14 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Ph.D. thesis is a search for physics beyond the standard model (SM) of particle physics, which successfully describes the interactions and properties of all known elementary particles. However, no particle exists in the SM that can account for the dark matter, which makes up about one quarter of the energy-mass content of the universe. Understanding the nature of dark matter is one goal of the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The extension of the SM with supersymmetry (SUSY) is considered a promising possibilities to explain dark matter. The nominated thesis describes a search for SUSY using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. It utilizes a final state consisting of a photon, a lepton, and a large momentum imbalance probing a class of SUSY models that has not yet been studied extensively. The thesis stands out not only due to its content that is explained with clarity but also because the author performed more or less all aspects of the thesis analysis by himself, from data skimming to limit calculations, which is extremely rare, especially nowadays in the large LHC collaborations.

Book Searching for Supersymmetry in Fully Hadronic Final States with the ATLAS Experiment

Download or read book Searching for Supersymmetry in Fully Hadronic Final States with the ATLAS Experiment written by Mats Joakim Robert Olsson and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and its experiments were built to explore fundamental questions of particle physics via proton-proton collisions at unprecedented center-of-mass energies, thus providing a unique environment for testing the Standard Model (SM) at the electroweak scale and searching for signs of new physics beyond the SM (BSM). The discovery of a SM-like 125 GeV Higgs boson by ATLAS and CMS hints of new physics at the electroweak scale-possibly within reach of the LHC-in order to mitigate divergent radiative corrections to the Higgs squared mass. This can systematically be accomplished by the introduction of supersymmetry (SUSY). For the experimentalist, SUSY provides a set of simplified benchmark models, with explicit and testable predictions, which are useful when searching for BSM physics. A large number of BSM searches has been carried out at the LHC. However, no evidence for SUSY has been found. It is therefore important to expand the scope. This thesis presents two ATLAS analyses for SUSY, both utilizing fully hadronic final states. The first analysis searches for the pair production of top squarks (stops), each with R-parity-violating decays into a b- and an s-quark. This analysis was performed using proton-proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 17.4 fb-1 at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. The second analysis searches for electroweak production of a chargino-neutralino pair, decaying into SM-quarks via a W boson and a SM-like 125 GeV Higgs boson, performed using an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb-1 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. No evidence of an excess beyond the SM background prediction is observed in either search, thus exclusion limits are set at 95% CL. Stops decaying directly to hadronic final states are excluded for masses in the range 100 to 315 GeV. Charginos and neutralinos decaying via Wh to hadronic final states are excluded up to 680 GeV, by far the strongest limits on electroweak SUSY with Wh decays to date. The tools and strategies developed in the searches for SUSY with hadronic final states in this thesis should prove useful in future searches for BSM physics at the LHC.

Book Search for Supersymmetry in Proton proton Collisions at 7 TeV in Events with a Single Lepton B tagged Jets and Missing Transverse Momentum at the LHC Using Data Collected from the CMS Detector

Download or read book Search for Supersymmetry in Proton proton Collisions at 7 TeV in Events with a Single Lepton B tagged Jets and Missing Transverse Momentum at the LHC Using Data Collected from the CMS Detector written by Wing Howard To and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes a search for supersymmetry (SUSY) at the Large Hadron Collider using data collected in Run 2011 at center of mass energy of 7 TeV by the Compact Muon Solenoid detector with an integrated luminosity of 4.98 $fb{-1}$. First, the Large Hadron Collider is briefly described along with the Compact Muon Solenoid detector. Second, the Standard Model of particle physics is described which leads to the motivations for supersymmetry and its description. Finally, a search for supersymmetry in events with a single lepton, 2 b-tagged jets and missing transverse energy is documented in detail. The results are used to predict the yields from the standard model in bins missing transverse energy (\met) and total transverse hadronic energy (HT). Limits are set using these results using a minimal supergravity SUSY model and simplified model spectra SUSY model.

Book A Search for Quasi long lived Supersymmetric Particles Within the CMS Detector at the LHC

Download or read book A Search for Quasi long lived Supersymmetric Particles Within the CMS Detector at the LHC written by Michael Kenneth Squires and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents a search for supersymmetry (SUSY), an extension to the stan- dard model (SM) of particle physics, with mass-degenerate co-next-to-lightest-stable parti- cles (co-NLSP). These co-NLSP particles are sleptons: either a selectron or smuon. Both of these co-NLSP sleptons undergo decay to their standard model counterparts and a nearly massless gravitino. We analyze a dataset of 19.4 fb−1 collected during run one operations at the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector at the Large Hadron Collider which ran at an 8 TeV center-of-mass collision energy. The co-NLSP sleptons in this model are quasistable, producing decays within the detector volume. We construct a custom analysis object com- posed of pairs of tracks that form a vertex at high precision. Tracks in events that pass trigger cuts which use initial and final state radiation from the hard co-NLSP pair production process, as well as the missing transverse energy from the gravitino are candidates for inclusion in this custom analysis object. We impose a series of offline selection cuts designed to separate possible beyond SM decay signatures from mundane backgrounds such as quasielastic scattering or select standard model decays like charged kaon or sigma decay. We take tuples that pass these selection criterion and boost the putative daughter particle into the putative mother particle's reference frame to form a spectrum in p* which, under the assumption of a decay at a specified mass configuration, produces a delta distribution that is smeared via resolution effects into a signal shape originating from decay. We observe at most three events in the data at the low end of our search region (100 GeV mother mass), which falls to zero events at a slepton mother mass of 260 GeV. These spectra are fit using a likelihood model with the signal probability density function being derived from simulation and the background selected as an exponential. Using Bayesian statistics and the profile likelihood technique we set limits on the co-NLSP slepton production cross section for masses between 100-210 GeV with proper lifetimes up to c[tau] = 93 cm.
