Book Supersonic Longitudinal Aerodynamic Characteristics of Two Space Shuttle Orbiter Configurations conducted in the Langley Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel

Download or read book Supersonic Longitudinal Aerodynamic Characteristics of Two Space Shuttle Orbiter Configurations conducted in the Langley Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-09 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was conducted to determine the supersonic longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics of 0.015 scale models of the Rockwell International 089B and 139B space shuttle orbiter configurations and the 139B orbiter with a modifier forebody. The models each had a 45 deg swept delta wing that was blended into the body with an 81 deg swept fillet to form a double delta planform. The vertical tail had a split rudder deflected 27.5 deg on each side to form a speed brake. Tests were conducted at Mach numbers of 2.5, 3.9, and 4.6 at a Reynolds number, based on the body length of the 089B model, of 4,150,000. Angles of attack varied from -4 deg to 44 deg at 0 deg sideslip. Ellison, J. C. Langley Research Center NASA-TM-74074, L-11787 RTOP 506-26-30-04...

Book Supersonic Aerodynamic Characteristics of a Proposed Assured Crew Return Capability Acrc Lifting Body Configuration

Download or read book Supersonic Aerodynamic Characteristics of a Proposed Assured Crew Return Capability Acrc Lifting Body Configuration written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by . This book was released on 2018-11-12 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was conducted in the Langley Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel at Mach numbers from 1.6 to 4.5. The model had a low-aspect-ratio body with a flat undersurface. A center fin and two outboard fins were mounted on the aft portion of the upper body. The outboard fins were rolled outboard 40 deg from the vertical. Elevon surfaces made up the trailing edges of the outboard fins, and body flaps were located on the upper and lower aft fuselage. The center fin pivoted about its midchord for yaw control. The model was longitudinally stable about the design center-of-gravity position at 54 percent of the body length. The configuration with undeflected longitudinal controls trimmed near 0 deg angle of attack at Mach numbers from 1.6 to 3.0 where lift and lift-drag ratio were negative. Longitudinal trim was near the maximum lift-drag ratio (1.4) at Mach 4.5. The model was directionally stable over Mach number range except at angles of attack around 4 deg at M = 2.5. Pitch control deflection of more than -10 deg with either elevons or body flaps is needed to trim the model to angles of attack at which lift becomes positive. With increased control deflection, the lifting-body configuration should perform the assured crew return mission through the supersonic speed range. Ware, George M. Langley Research Center...

Book Supersonic and Hypersonic Aerodynamic Characteristics of Two Shuttle Orbiter Configurations Designed for Reduced Length

Download or read book Supersonic and Hypersonic Aerodynamic Characteristics of Two Shuttle Orbiter Configurations Designed for Reduced Length written by and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance, stability, and control tests at supersonic and hypersonic speeds have been performed on two versions of a shuttle orbiter configuration designed for reduced length. One of the test configurations had twin dorsal fins rolled out 15 deg, the other a centerline single dorsal fin. Effects of eleven and body flap deflection, rudder flare, planform fillet, and aileron deflection were examined. The supersonic tests were over the Mach number range from 1.6 to 4.63 at a Reynolds number based on model length of 4.3 x 10(exp 6). The hypersonic tests were conducted at a Mach number of 10.3 and Reynolds number of 0.67 x 10(exp 6). Aerodynamics, Supersonic and hypersonic, Space vehicles.

Book Overview of Supersonic Aerodynamics Measurement Techniques in the Nasa Langley Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel

Download or read book Overview of Supersonic Aerodynamics Measurement Techniques in the Nasa Langley Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel written by Gary E. Erickson and published by BiblioGov. This book was released on 2013-07 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An overview is given of selected measurement techniques used in the NASA Langley Research Center (NASA LaRC) Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel (UPWT) to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of aerospace vehicles operating at supersonic speeds. A broad definition of a measurement technique is adopted in this paper and is any qualitative or quantitative experimental approach that provides information leading to the improved understanding of the supersonic aerodynamic characteristics. On-surface and off-surface measurement techniques used to obtain discrete (point) and global (field) measurements and planar and global flow visualizations are described, and examples of all methods are included. The discussion is limited to recent experiences in the UPWT and is, therefore, not an exhaustive review of existing experimental techniques. The diversity and high quality of the measurement techniques and the resultant data illustrate the capabilities of a ground-based experimental facility and the key role that it plays in the advancement of our understanding, prediction, and control of supersonic aerodynamics.
