Book Supersonic Combustion and Burning in Ramjet Combustors

Download or read book Supersonic Combustion and Burning in Ramjet Combustors written by Rudolph Edse and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report discusses research results obtained on the experimental and theoretical studies of subsonic and supersonic burning in ramjet combustors during the period 1 April to 31 March 1972. During this period theoretical calculations showed that nozzle dimensions for a chemically reacting flow must be based on the shifting equilibrium sound speed. Incompatible conditions are obtained when the frozen sound speed is used. The difference in the nozzle area for the two cases is significant. Deviations of the observed wave speed and pressure of detonations in hydrogen-oxygen and hydrogen-nitric oxide mixtures initially at high pressure from the theoretical values were determined to be caused apparently by turbulence in the gas flow behind the wave. Book Analytical and Experimental Evaluation of the Supersonic Combustion Ramjet Engine Volume Ii Component Evaluation

Download or read book Analytical and Experimental Evaluation of the Supersonic Combustion Ramjet Engine Volume Ii Component Evaluation written by GENERAL ELECTRIC CO CINCINNATI OH ADVANCED ENGINE AND TECHNOLOGY Dept and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This was an experimental and analytical investigation to supply design information for the aerothermo design of a supersonic combustor for a flight test vehicle. The penetration of fuel jets into a supersonic stream was investigated in a cold flow supersonic wind tunnel and combustion test of scale model combustors were conducted in a Hypersonic Arc-Tunnel. Combustion tests of several configurations identified a burner having adequate performance characteristics for achieving the vehicle mission. The aerothermo design of the vehicle combustor was based on this tested configuration. This volume is devoted to investigations of Fuel Injection and Combustion in supersonic airstreams. (Author).

Book Combustor Inlet Interactions and Modeling of Hypersonic Dual Combustion Ramjet Engines

Download or read book Combustor Inlet Interactions and Modeling of Hypersonic Dual Combustion Ramjet Engines written by Paul J. Waltrup and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two distinct but related basic research efforts are being investigated under the joint sponsorship of the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) and the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA). The first effort is to experimentally characterize the flowfields at the entrance of supersonic combustors in hypersonic dual-combustion ramjet engines and the second is to develop the component and engine cycle analysis required to predict the internal flowfields and performance of these engines. Both are basic to the successful development of advanced, hypersonic airbreathing engines. Progress to date includes the development of a simplified axisymmetric mixing and combustion analysis and a concomitant wall boundary layer analysis which describe the major flow phenomena within the main supersonic combustor of a dual combustion ramjet engine. The experimental hardware for the combustor/inlet interaction tests is also complete and initial testing has begun. Currently, refinements to the combustion and wall boundary layer analysis with particular emphasis on the base flow/mixing region, are being pursued and testing with the combustor/inlet interaction hardware continue. Book Combustor Inlet Interactions and Modeling of Hypersonic Dual Combustor Ramjet Engines

Download or read book Combustor Inlet Interactions and Modeling of Hypersonic Dual Combustor Ramjet Engines written by Richard D. Stockbridge and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research has been to experimentally and analytically describe the inlet/combustor/exit nozzle flowfields in hypersonic DCR (Dual combustion Ramjet) engines. The experimental effort to date describes, in part, the flow characteristics in the isolator duct that conducts air supersonically from the external flowfield of the hypersonic air inlet to the supersonic combustor. This description includes the mean flow properties, the turbulent fluctuation flow properties, the boundary layer growth and the simulated precombustion compression field for an initial Mach 2.4 flow in a 20-in. long annular duct with inner and outer radii of 3.125 and 4.2 in., respectively. The analytical effort includes models that describe: (1) the recirculation region at the DCR gas generator base created by a surrounding supersonic jet; (2) the mixing and burning processes in the DCR supersonic combustor; (3) the supersonic combustor boundary layer; and (4) the nozzle flow. The models include such enhancements as finite rate, multiple species chemistry, the solution of the full Navier-Stokes equations for axisymmetric flow and energy transfer due to mass diffusion. Keywords: Combustor/inlet interactions; Shock boundary layer interactions; Skin friction and heat transfer; Mixing and combustion; Supersonic combustion.

Book Study of Combustors for Supersonic Ram jet ods Project

Download or read book Study of Combustors for Supersonic Ram jet ods Project written by John P. Longwell and published by . This book was released on 1946 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigation of the air pressure at various points in these burners before combustion started showed that immediately downstream from the flame holder the pressure was below atmospheric and the velocity above sonic. Since it is known that low pressure makes ignition difficult an effort was made to ignite in a zone of higher pressure. This was accomplished by placing two flame holders in series and igniting at the upstream flame holder where the pressure was higher due to the effect of the downstream flame holder. Using this principle, burners capable of spark ignition over a wide range of air/fuel ratios at an air rate of 11 lbs./sec. have been developed. These burners develop approximately 80% of theoretical thrust at 15:1 air/fuel ratio and 85% of theoretical thrust at 22.1 air/fuel ratio. The air specific impulse is about 150 lbs. per lbs. of air/sec. at an air/fuel ratio or 15:1. The actual thrust under these conditions is about 1000-1100 pounds. The drag of the atomizing section, the ignition section and the burner walls, as determined from thrust and pressure measurements during burning at 15:1 air/fuel ratio and 11 lbs./sec. of air, amounts to about 11% of the thrust developed or about 4 p.s.i. for one of the burners. Book excerpt: The report contains research results obtained from experimental and theoretical studies of subsonic and supersonic combustion phenomena pertaining to ramjet-combustors. A theoretical model has been developed for predicting the transition of one-dimensional deflagration waves to stable detonation waves. According to preliminary results deflagrations passing through hydrogen-bromine mixtures do not lead to detonation waves. However, experiments have shown that Chapman-Jouguet detonation waves are obtained in these mixtures when ignition occurs by shock waves. Induction distances predicted by the theory for hydrogen-oxygen mixtures agree with experimentally observed values. The detonation speeds and pressures of a 1:1 (by volume) hydrogen-bromine mixture were calculated and measured experimentally in shock tubes. The laminar flame speed of a hydrogen-air mixture was determined for initial gas temperatures ranging from 300 to 784. (Modified author abstract).
