Book Supernova 1987A 30 Years Later IAU S331

Download or read book Supernova 1987A 30 Years Later IAU S331 written by Alexandre Marcowith and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cataclysmic stellar explosion Supernova 1987A, visible to the naked eye, was the nearest and brightest supernova witnessed since the invention of the telescope four centuries ago. This volume deals with supernovae and their remnants, in terms of exceptional phenomena that produce and release high-energy nuclei and particles. Marking the thirtieth anniversary of SN 1987A, the proceedings of IAU Symposium 331 introduce the accumulating knowledge on these central sources in many active fields of investigation: stellar evolution and the diversity of supernova progenitors and their properties, explosive nucleosynthesis and particle acceleration in the most extreme environments known to physics, and the long-standing issues about the origins of heavy nuclei in the Universe and of cosmic rays. Through its interdisciplinary approach, this volume also sheds light on the open issues related to these topics and emphasizes topics of future interest with upcoming multi-wavelength and multi-messenger facilities.

Download or read book The Supernova Story written by Laurence A. Marschall and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astronomers believe that a supernova is a massive explosion signaling the death of a star, causing a cosmic recycling of the chemical elements and leaving behind a pulsar, black hole, or nothing at all. In an engaging story of the life cycles of stars, Laurence Marschall tells how early astronomers identified supernovae, and how later scientists came to their current understanding, piecing together observations and historical accounts to form a theory, which was tested by intensive study of SN 1987A, the brightest supernova since 1006. He has revised and updated The Supernova Story to include all the latest developments concerning SN 1987A, which astronomers still watch for possible aftershocks, as well as SN 1993J, the spectacular new event in the cosmic laboratory.

  • Author : David Branch
  • Publisher : Springer

Download or read book Supernova Explosions written by David Branch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-10 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Targeting advanced students of astronomy and physics, as well as astronomers and physicists contemplating research on supernovae or related fields, David Branch and J. Craig Wheeler offer a modern account of the nature, causes and consequences of supernovae, as well as of issues that remain to be resolved. Owing especially to (1) the appearance of supernova 1987A in the nearby Large Magellanic Cloud, (2) the spectacularly successful use of supernovae as distance indicators for cosmology, (3) the association of some supernovae with the enigmatic cosmic gamma-ray bursts, and (4) the discovery of a class of superluminous supernovae, the pace of supernova research has been increasing sharply. This monograph serves as a broad survey of modern supernova research and a guide to the current literature. The book’s emphasis is on the explosive phases of supernovae. Part 1 is devoted to a survey of the kinds of observations that inform us about supernovae, some basic interpretations of such data, and an overview of the evolution of stars that brings them to an explosive endpoint. Part 2 goes into more detail on core-collapse and superluminous events: which kinds of stars produce them, and how do they do it? Part 3 is concerned with the stellar progenitors and explosion mechanisms of thermonuclear (Type Ia) supernovae. Part 4 is about consequences of supernovae and some applications to astrophysics and cosmology. References are provided in sufficient number to help the reader enter the literature.

Book Supernova Environmental Impacts IAU S296

Download or read book Supernova Environmental Impacts IAU S296 written by Alak Ray and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-02-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New telescopes spanning the full electromagnetic spectrum have enabled the study of supernovae (SNe) and supernova remnants (SNRs) to advance at a breathtaking pace. Automated synoptic surveys have increased the detection rate of supernovae by more than an order of magnitude and have led to the discovery of highly unusual supernovae. Observations of gamma-ray emission from SNRs with ground-based Cherenkov telescopes and the Fermi telescope have spawned new insights into particle acceleration in supernova shocks. Far-infrared observations from the Spitzer and Herschel observatories have told us much about the properties and fate of dust grains in SNe and SNRs. Work with satellite-borne Chandra and XMM-Newton telescopes and ground-based radio and optical telescopes reveal signatures of supernova interaction with their surrounding medium, their progenitor life history and of the ecosystems of their host galaxies. IAU Symposium 296 covers all these advances, focusing on the interactions of supernovae with their environments.

Book Astrophysical Masers and Their Environments IAU S242

Download or read book Astrophysical Masers and Their Environments IAU S242 written by International Astronomical Union. Symposium and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-02-14 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Astrophysical masers, naturally occurring microwave and radio-wave emissions, provide an important tool to investigate astrophysical environments. Several thousand maser sources have been observed in the interstellar medium and star formation regions, in the expanding winds from evolved stars, in the compressed shells of supernovae remnants, in comets and in the centers of galaxies. Masers are also useful for studying the structure and dynamics of our own galaxy, while masers in other galaxies are now used for cosmological studies and studies of galactic nuclei. This volume contains the latest research on the topic as presented at IAU Symposium 242, only the third international symposium on astrophysical masers. Over 125 astronomers from 18 different countries gathered in Alice Spring, Australia, for discussions on maser research.
