Find out if there's really something to be feared on Cult House Road in Chadds Ford, where the trees seem to grow intentionally away from the road. Is a murder spree to blame for the spookiness? And one mustn't forget to visit America's first serial killer, at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon; but be careful, because you might get a migraine at this grave site. Ghosts of murderers, maids, Major Generals, and even a monster or two are among the beings you will encounter within these pages. The one thing these lost souls share is a desire to have their story told. Find a comfy chair and settle in as you visit the spookier side of Pennsylvania.

This book was released on 2022-05-19T22:59:00Z with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 Ghosts are history. Whether you believe in them or not, every time a ghost story is told, someone is providing an interpretation of events of the past. The details of a ghost story may be factually accurate, or they may only be loosely based on actual occurrences. #2 The story of Barbara Davidson, a young woman who was murdered and decapitated, is told at a local play every other year. Her head was never found, and her ghost has reportedly appeared to and interacted with dozens of local residents. #3 In 1794, Barbara returned to live with her parents in Beaver County. She resumed her work on the farm, and everything seemed to return to normal. In 1795, her parents and the rest of the family made a trip to Pittsburgh to purchase livestock and poultry. When they returned, Barbara was missing. Her body was found buried in the cemetery about two miles from her home. #4 The story of the ghost was so well known that in 1935, the financially struggling Negley Traction Company tried to use it to make some extra money. It offered a tour called Barbara Davidson’s Midnight Excursion, charging fifty cents a head to ride the trolley out to the graveyard and past some of the locations where the ghost had allegedly appeared.

Ghostly travelers are said to wander the lonely roads of western Pennsylvania. Is it the angry spirit of a jealous husband or a gypsy king who stalks Erie County’s Axe Murder Hollow? Shades of Death Road in Washington County may be host to phantom coal miners killed during a deadly labor dispute. With firsthand accounts and historical research, authors Thomas White and Tony Lavorgne travel the backcountry roads and byways of western Pennsylvania to discover their ghost tales and mysterious legends. Includes photos! “The authors include a history of each road along with the supernatural legends and other unexplained activity. Surprisingly, they are able to provide possible explanations for most of the alleged hauntings, but admit that they cannot account for every one, which allows the roads in question to keep their allure and spooky possibilities.” —PopCultureGuy

Download or read book Supernatural Encounters written by Stephen Gordon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-06 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The belief in the reality of demons and the restless dead formed a central facet of the medieval worldview. Whether a pestilent-spreading corpse mobilised by the devil, a purgatorial spirit returning to earth to ask for suffrage, or a shape-shifting demon intent on crushing its victims as they slept, encounters with supernatural entities were often met with consternation and fear. Chroniclers, hagiographers, sermon writers, satirists, poets, and even medical practitioners utilised the cultural ‘text’ of the supernatural encounter in many different ways, showcasing the multiplicity of contemporary attitudes to death, disease, and the afterlife. In this volume, Stephen Gordon explores the ways in which conflicting ideas about the intention and agency of supernatural entities were understood and articulated in different social and literary contexts. Focusing primarily on material from medieval England, c.1050–1450, Gordon discusses how writers such as William of Malmesbury, William of Newburgh, Walter Map, John Mirk, and Geoffrey Chaucer utilised the belief in demons, nightmares, and walking corpses for pointed critical effect. Ultimately, this monograph provides new insights into the ways in which the broad ontological category of the ‘revenant’ was conceptualised in the medieval world.

Book excerpt: Here are six strange and supernatural stories from the Pennsylvania Mountains. This is a collection of strange and supernatural stories from the mountains of Central Pennsylvania. Here you'll find the story of a wolf hunter enchanted by a woods witch, a boy who uses a bobcat skull to defeat an evil sorcerer, and a girl who watches as a stuffed panther returns to life in the moonlight. As you read these tales you will enter a wild world of mystery and danger, lit by moonbeams and starlight, where truth hides in the shadows, where even ordinary things become otherworldly. But first, a warning. These stories are not natural. They are supernatural. All of them are eerie and some are downright scary. So before we begin, let me tell you an old storyteller's trick for preventing nightmares. Tonight, before you get in bed, I want you to take off your shoes--you probably do that anyway, right?--I want you to take off your shoes and put them underneath your bed, with the toes facing opposite directions. If you do that, none of the stories in this book will give you any troublesome dreams. I first heard stories like these when I was a boy growing up in the mountains of central Pennsylvania, where my family has lived for more than two hundred years. Even then I loved the dark, wild feeling of these tales. As an adult, I have done my best to keep the old tales alive and to create some original ones based on the tales I heard while I was growing up. As any storyteller must, I have remembered, reshaped, and reworked these stories to make them come alive on the printed page.I hope their magic will charm you, as it has me.These stories are at their best when they are read aloud on a cool, windy night when the moon is full and the house is dark and quiet. So turn down the lights, gather your courage, and enjoy these supernatural stories from the Pennsylvania mountains.

Book Storied and Supernatural Places

Download or read book Storied and Supernatural Places written by Ülo Valk and published by Suomalaisen Kirjallisuuden Seura. This book was released on 2018-05-09 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the narrative construction of places, the relationship between tradition communities and their environments, the supernatural dimensions of cultural landscapes and wilderness as they are manifested in European folklore and in early literary sources, such as the Old Norse sagas. The first section “Explorations in Place-Lore” discusses cursed and sacred places, churches, graveyards, haunted houses, cemeteries, grave mounds, hill forts, and other tradition dominants in the micro-geography of the Nordic and Baltic countries, both retrospectively and from synchronous perspectives. The supernaturalisation of places appears as a socially embedded set of practices that involves storytelling and ritual behaviour. Articles show, how places accumulate meanings as they are layered by stories and how this shared knowledge about environments can actualise in personal experiences. Articles in the second section “Regional Variation, Environment and Spatial Dimensions” address ecotypes, milieu-morphological adaptation in Nordic and Baltic-Finnic folklores, and the active role of tradition bearers in shaping beliefs about nature as well as attitudes towards the environment. The meaning of places and spatial distance as the marker of otherness and sacrality in Old Norse sagas is also discussed here. The third section of the book “Traditions and Histories Reconsidered” addresses major developments within the European social histories and mentalities. It scrutinizes the history of folkloristics, its geopolitical dimensions and its connection with nation building, as well as looking at constructions of the concepts Baltic, Nordic and Celtic. It also sheds light on the social base of folklore and examines vernacular views toward legendry and the supernatural.
