Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the logical continuation of a series of collected essays examining the origins and evolution of myths and legends of the supernatural in Western and non-Western tradition and popular culture. The first two volumes of the series, The Universal Vampire: Origins and Evolution of a Legend (Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, 2013) and Images of the Modern Vampire: The Hip and the Atavistic. (Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, 2013) focused on the vampire legend. The essays in this collection expand that scope to include a multicultural and multigeneric discussion of a pantheon of supernatural creatures who interact and cross species-specific boundaries with ease. Angels and demons are discussed from the perspective of supernatural allegory, angelic ethics and supernatural heredity and genetics. Fairies, sorcerers, witches and werewolves are viewed from the perspectives of popular nightmare tales, depictions of race and ethnicity, popular public discourse and cinematic imagery. Discussions of the “undead and still dead” include images of death messengers and draugar, zombies and vampires in literature, popular media and Japanese anime.

Book Mythology Legends from Around the Globe

Download or read book Mythology Legends from Around the Globe written by Andreas Sofroniou and published by . This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legends, myths, speechesThe term mythology (mythologia) means the study relating to and dealing with the interpretation of myths, legends, and occasionally extending to logos, speech. Further on, a myth can be an allegorical narrative pertaining to the gods, demigods, and legendary heroes of a particular people and their branch of knowledge that deals with a popular belief or assumption that has grown up around someone or something.MythMyth is a traditional story about the past, often including religious or fantastic elements. Myths of some sort can be found in all societies, although they may function in different ways. They may be attempts to explain the origins of the universe and of mankind, the development of political institutions, or the reasons for ritual practices; on the other hand, they may simply be told for the love of a good story. Myths often describe the deeds of gods or supernatural beings, or of heroes, like the trickster, who have supernatural powers that enable them to change from human to animal form, or to perform extraordinary deeds. Anthropologists have spent a great deal of time trying to differentiate myth from history, but it is clear that history can serve the same functions as myth, and the two types of tale about the past blur into one another. Theorists like Frazer regarded myths as a form of early religious or scientific thought. This approach was later criticized by Malinowski, who saw myth as providing a justification for the social order. The Romanian-US historian of religion Mircea Eliade (1907-86) regarded myth as a religious phenomenon, man's attempt to return to the original act of creation. Levi-Strauss has argued that it is not the content but the structure of myth which is important, since it reveals universal mental processes. In psychology, myths are regarded as an important basis for human behaviour. Both Freud and Jung made extensive use of myths in their work. Whatever the theories regarding the origin and functions of myths, they remain fundamental to the human consciousness.Creation of mythCreation of a myth is a tale or myth recounting the origins of the natural world and human society. Myths about the creation of the world, whether they describe the operation of a creator god, the emergence of the world from primordial parents or a cosmic egg, sacrifice, or a primordial battle, have great importance within religious beliefs and associated rituals. Typical features include irreconcilable opposites such as light and dark, or water and earth. Some creation myths refer to the origins of particular clans or lineages; these typically tell the story of descent from a single common ancestor or founder. The Trobriand Islanders of Melanesia, for example, believe that the ancestors of their four clans originally sprang from a particular hole in the ground, and this myth is used to explain differences of rank within the society. Described by the anthropologist Malinowski as a charter for legitimacy, myths of this kind often act to justify the authority of elders or chiefs, and may be an important component in the political organization of society.

Book Supernatural Myths and Legends of Russia

Download or read book Supernatural Myths and Legends of Russia written by Leo Hardy and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2020-06-02 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grigori Efimovich Rasputin this self-proclaimed mystic is undoubtedly one of the most controversial people history has ever known. Whether mystic with supernatural powers or con man, Rasputin became one of the most notorious men in history. On a routine voyage to pick up cargo in Africa the Russian Freighter, The Ivan Vassili picked up more than freight. It became infested with a supernatural entity that murdered a number of crewmen. The Ivan Vassili had no issues and it did its job perfectly until the year 1903 when suddenly everything changed and service on the Ivan Vassili became the stuff of horror films. Baba Yaga is perhaps the most popular creature of all the many heroines of Russian folk tales. What is she: horrific, terrible, bloodthirsty? Countless tales have been told about this mythical creature. Baba Yaga was known for her evil acts and unreal appearance. She had a large distorted nose that would touch the ceiling when she sleeps, long metal teeth to bite bones, skinny bony legs, large ears, and fingers. She is not an ordinary witch, she rides in her giant mortar in which she crushes bones, she has a long pestle as her magic wand and a broom with a silver dash to clear her trail. Baba seemed to be immortal as generations after generations would become her prey. From time immemorial, people in the Slavic region talk of these ghastly mermaids. This mermaid was known as 'Rusalka'. The Rusalka in the Slavic areas was most feared by the people who have ever tortured or abused a woman. The Russian Sleep Experiment sounded innocent enough at first. The stated goal was to discover how long a man could go without sleep of any kind. What the researcher accidental discovered was that sleep was not just necessary for the body and the mind, but to maintain a separation between this world and one of unimaginable horrors that waits behind the wall of sleep. Horrors that would reveal themselves during the bloody and violent end of the sleep experiment.

Book Fantastic Creatures in Mythology and Folklore

Download or read book Fantastic Creatures in Mythology and Folklore written by Juliette Wood and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-08-23 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on historical sources, myth and folklore, Fantastic Creatures in Mythology and Folklore explores the roles of fantastical beasts - particularly the unicorn, the mermaid, and the dragon - in a series of thematic chapters organised according to their legendary dwelling place, be this land, sea, or air. Through this original approach, Juliette Wood provides the first study of mythical beasts in history from the medieval period to the present day, providing new insights into the ways these creatures continue to define our constantly changing relationship to both real and imagined worlds. It places particular emphasis on the role of the internet, computer games, and the cyberspace community, and in doing so, demonstrates that the core medieval myth surrounding these creatures remains static within the ever-increasing arena of mass marketing and the internet. This is a vital resource for undergraduates studying fantastic creatures in history, literature and media studies.
