Book Grocery Story

Download or read book Grocery Story written by Jon Steinman and published by New Society Publishers. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hungry for change? Put the power of food co-ops on your plate and grow your local food economy. Food has become ground-zero in our efforts to increase awareness of how our choices impact the world. Yet while we have begun to transform our communities and dinner plates, the most authoritative strand of the food web has received surprisingly little attention: the grocery store—the epicenter of our food-gathering ritual. Through penetrating analysis and inspiring stories and examples of American and Canadian food co-ops, Grocery Story makes a compelling case for the transformation of the grocery store aisles as the emerging frontier in the local and good food movements. Author Jon Steinman: Deconstructs the food retail sector and the shadows cast by corporate giants Makes the case for food co-ops as an alternative Shows how co-ops spur the creation of local food-based economies and enhance low-income food access. Grocery Story is for everyone who eats. Whether you strive to eat more local and sustainable food, or are in support of community economic development, Grocery Story will leave you hungry to join the food co-op movement in your own community.

Book The Public Health Effects of Food Deserts

Download or read book The Public Health Effects of Food Deserts written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-07-02 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States, people living in low-income neighborhoods frequently do not have access to affordable healthy food venues, such as supermarkets. Instead, those living in "food deserts" must rely on convenience stores and small neighborhood stores that offer few, if any, healthy food choices, such as fruits and vegetables. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) and National Research Council (NRC) convened a two-day workshop on January 26-27, 2009, to provide input into a Congressionally-mandated food deserts study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service. The workshop, summarized in this volume, provided a forum in which to discuss the public health effects of food deserts.

Book Rural Food Retailing and Independent Grocery Retailer Exits

Download or read book Rural Food Retailing and Independent Grocery Retailer Exits written by Metin Çakır and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We investigate the food retailing landscape and the exit of independent grocery stores in rural America using U.S. NETS data. Our paper makes several contributions that could potentially help the agenda for future research and public policy. We begin by documenting local concentration trends in food retailing and how they change across rural and urban markets from 1990 to 2015. Then, we conduct two event studies to examine how entry by a large chain is associated with the local market concentration and independent grocery retailer (IGR) exits. Last, we document the IGR exit rate in rural markets for a period of twenty-five years and investigate its determinants in a regression framework. Our results show that market concentration in food retailing has increased since 1990, but the increasing trend after the Great Recession of 2008 is particularly noticeable. The local concentration differs substantially by the urban status of markets. Focusing on rural markets, we show that entry by a large food retailer is associated with higher market concentration and the decreasing number of IGRs. We also find that the annual average IGR exit rate is around 6.6% during the study period. The IGRs that are younger that operate in relatively more competitive markets, and that face entry by a large chain, are more likely to exit. Also, IGR rates are higher in markets with lower median income and higher poverty rates. We discuss how our results can potentially inform policies on sustainable rural development, food access, and food insecurity in rural communities.

Book excerpt: "A deeply curious and evenhanded report on our national appetites." --The New York Times In the tradition of Fast Food Nation and The Omnivore's Dilemma, an extraordinary investigation into the human lives at the heart of the American grocery store The miracle of the supermarket has never been more apparent. Like the doctors and nurses who care for the sick, suddenly the men and women who stock our shelves and operate our warehouses are understood as 'essential' workers, providing a quality of life we all too easily take for granted. But the sad truth is that the grocery industry has been failing these workers for decades. In this page-turning expose, author Benjamin Lorr pulls back the curtain on the highly secretive grocery industry. Combining deep sourcing, immersive reporting, and sharp, often laugh-out-loud prose, Lorr leads a wild investigation, asking what does it take to run a supermarket? How does our food get on the shelves? And who suffers for our increasing demands for convenience and efficiency? In this journey: We learn the secrets of Trader Joe's success from Trader Joe himself Drive with truckers caught in a job they call "sharecropping on wheels" Break into industrial farms with activists to learn what it takes for a product to earn certification labels like "fair trade" and "free range" Follow entrepreneurs as they fight for shelf space, learning essential tips, tricks, and traps for any new food business Journey with migrants to examine shocking forced labor practices through their eyes The product of five years of research and hundreds of interviews across every level of the business, The Secret Life of Groceries is essential reading for those who want to understand our food system--delivering powerful social commentary on the inherently American quest for more and compassionate insight into the lives that provide it.

Book Supermarkets and Agri food Supply Chains

Download or read book Supermarkets and Agri food Supply Chains written by David Burch and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the gradual shift in the distribution of power in agri-food supply chains, away from the manufacturers of branded food products to the global supermarket chains such as Wal-Mart and Tesco. This transformation has had a profound effect on the food we eat, together with the ways in which food is produced, processed and marketed. The authors assess the causes and consequences of this transformation, and evaluate the impacts along the whole supply chain. The book considers a variety of theoretical and cultural approaches to the analysis of change in the organization and management of the agri-food supply chain, and presents a series of studies focusing upon the effects of changes in Europe, North America and less developed countries. The impacts on farmers and workers, and implications for the environment, are also considered. The contested nature of these changes suggests a number of possible future scenarios for the global agri-food system, which are also analysed and evaluated. This book will be of great interest to postgraduate and undergraduate students in business studies, sociology, politics, geography, and cultural studies. Academic researchers and teachers, and policy makers and researchers in business, government and industry will also find much of interest.

Book Supermarket USA

Download or read book Supermarket USA written by Shane Hamilton and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This cultural history examines the global rise of American-style supermarkets during the Cold War era and how they shaped the way we eat today. Supermarkets were invented in the United States, and from the 1940s on they made their way around the world, often explicitly to carry American-style economic culture with them. This innovative history tells us how supermarkets were used as anticommunist weapons during the Cold War, and how their proliferation has shaped our current food system. The widespread appeal of supermarkets contributed to a “farms race” between the United States and the Soviet Union, as the superpowers vied to show that their contrasting approaches to food production and distribution were best suited to an abundant future. In the aftermath of the Cold War, US food power was transformed into a global system of market power, laying the groundwork for the emergence of our contemporary world, in which transnational supermarkets operate as powerful institutions in a global food economy.

Book The Supermarket Revolution and Food Security in Namibia

Download or read book The Supermarket Revolution and Food Security in Namibia written by Ndeyapo Nickanor and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2017-12-17 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The surprisingly high rate of supermarket patronage in low-income areas of Windhoek, Namibias capital and largest city, is at odds with conventional wisdom that supermarkets in African cities are primarily patronized by middle and high-income residents and therefore target their neighbourhoods. What is happening in Namibia and other Southern African countries that make supermarkets so much more accessible to the urban poor? What are they buying at supermarkets and how frequently do they shop there? Further, what is the impact of supermarket expansion on informal food vendors? This report, which presents the findings from the South African Supermarkets in Growing African Cities project research in 2016-2017 in Windhoek, looks at the evidence and tries to answer these questions and others. The research and policy debate on the relationship between the supermarket revo- lution and food security is also discussed. Here, the issues include whether supermarket supply chains and procurement practices miti- gate rural food insecurity through providing new market opportunities for smallholder farmers; the impact of supermarkets on the food security and consumption patterns of residents of African cities; and the relationship between supermarket expansion and governance of the food system, particularly at the local level.

Book Career as a Supermarket Manager

Download or read book Career as a Supermarket Manager written by Institute for Career Research and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-01-03 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TODAY'S SUPERMARKETS ARE A FAR CRY from the corner grocery stores that once dotted the American landscape from coast to coast. Supermarkets have evolved into stores that sell everything from frozen foods, fresh meats, fish, dairy products, vegetables, and fruits to packaged goods, pharmaceuticals, potted plants, flowers, balloons, prepared foods, baked goods, greeting cards and magazines, plus essential household supplies like glue, batteries, duct tape, automotive supplies such as motor oil, and even some basic appliances, including heaters, generators, propane tanks, and photographic equipment. This radical change from simply selling food to filling store aisles with almost anything a customer might need has created a wide range of retail management jobs in the supermarket industry. Each new department added to a supermarket requires a manager to run it. That translates into executive jobs, as the supermarket industry keeps expanding to make its stores indispensable, one-stop locations for consumers to find anything and everything they are looking for. New supermarkets are opening up throughout the United States all the time, especially in rural areas, as the population grows in those regions. While many parts of the US economy have gone digital, various aspects of the supermarket business just cannot be automated or are simply more efficient when there is a human being in charge. That includes having a manager on site who decides when and how to restock shelves, when to add cashiers to keep the checkout lines moving, and where to put free-standing displays. Individual managers also determine when particular items, especially perishables and prepared foods, should be marked down, and when to have staff circulating on the floor to respond to customers' questions and concerns. The supermarket industry is very competitive. It is based on people returning to the store and having a positive experience every time they go there. Customer satisfaction is vital to the success of any supermarket, and department and store managers have to make sure customers are happy with how the store is run. Even though most supermarkets today are part of large chains, each store is run differently. Some stores have more staff, are better stocked, are cleaner and brighter, and are more customer-friendly than others. Each store reflects the management style and philosophy of the management team, which should have a good understanding of their customers. For instance, if a supermarket serves a largely Hispanic community, it has to carry a product line that appeals to its ethnic clientele, above and beyond the standard offerings. If it doesn't, another supermarket will open up that does cater to that community and will win over that customer base. It comes down to knowing what your customers like and need. Supermarkets that are part of a national or regional chain have to answer to a corporate office. That creates another level of management in the industry and more jobs at higher salaries in the corporate headquarters. For example, every chain uses district managers from its corporate office to oversee the operation of its stores in a particular region. Other management jobs at the corporate level include marketing managers, who help promote stores and products in the stores, and category managers, who are in charge of store departments, such as dairy and meat, on a chain-wide basis. Supermarket management is a fast-paced field because the industry is always following new trends in retail. That makes a job in supermarket management both demanding and exciting
