Book Unsteady Supersonic Combustion

Download or read book Unsteady Supersonic Combustion written by Mingbo Sun and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-14 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the unsteady phenomena needed to understand supersonic combustion. Following an initial chapter that introduces readers to the basic concepts in and classical studies on unsteady supersonic combustion, the book highlights recent studies on unsteady phenomena, which offer insights on e.g. interactions between acoustic waves and flames, flow dominating instability, ignition instability, flame flashback, and near-blowout-limit combustion. In turn, the book discusses in detail the fundamental mechanisms of these phenomena, and puts forward practical suggestions for future scramjet design.

Diagnostics will be used to determine the radiation spectra for the different discharges in the supersonic flow. Measurements of chemical radical and electron concentrations will also be made. Corresponding numerical simulations will be compared to the experimental data.

Book Supersonic Combustion in Premixed Hydrocarbon air Flow

Download or read book Supersonic Combustion in Premixed Hydrocarbon air Flow written by J. TAMAGNO and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the mechanisms of ignition and flame propagation of supersonic air-hydrogen fuel mixtures at temperatures below the published autoignition limits was made. The hydrocarbons considered were: methane (CH4), ethane (C2H6), ethylene (C2H4) and propane (C3H8) with flame ignition and stabilization by means of a small hydrogen-oxygen pilot flame. Flame speeds for methane, ethane, and ethylene-air mixtures were found to be: four, three and two times smaller, respectively than hydrogen-air flame speeds under similar flow conditions. The dependence of the flame speed on the initial mixture temperature was correlated by a simple exponential relation. Addition of a small amount of hydrogen to a methane-air mixture resulted in doubling the observed flame angle. Finally, measurements of flame temperature distribution and spreading rate were shown to be in agreement with results of a theoretical analysis incorporating finite rate methane-air chemistry and axisymmetric diffusive flow. Book Toward Plasma Assisted Ignition in Scramjets

Download or read book Toward Plasma Assisted Ignition in Scramjets written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Air Force plasma ignition program is assessing the prospect of main-fuel ignition with plasma generating devices in a supersonic flow. As the study progresses baseline conditions of operation are being established such as the required operational time of the device to initiate a combustion shock train. The two plasma torches currently under investigation consist of a DC constricted-arc design from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and an AC unconstricted-arc design based on a modified spark-plug from Polytechnic University. The plasma torches are realistic in size and operate within current power constraints while differing substantially in orifice geometry. In order to compare the potential of each concept the flow physics of each part of the igniter/fuel-injector/combustor system are being studied. In each step of the program, we utilize CFD and experiments to help define and advance the ignition process. To understand the constraints involved with ignition process of a hydrocarbon fuel jet an experimental effort to study gaseous and liquid hydrocarbons is underway, involving the testing of ethylene and JP-7 fuels with nitrogen and air plasmas. Results from the individual igniter studies have shown the plasma igniters to produce hot pockets of highly excited gas with peak temperatures up to (and in some cases above) 5000 K at only 2-kW total input power. In addition ethylene and JP-7 flames with a significant level of OH as determined by OH PLIF were also produced in a Mach-2 supersonic flow with a total temperature and pressure of 590 K and 5.4 atm respectively.

Book Study of Internal and External Plasma Assisted Combustion in Supersonic Gas Flow

Download or read book Study of Internal and External Plasma Assisted Combustion in Supersonic Gas Flow written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Project is devoted to basic study on the field of external and internal plasma assisted combustion. This effort consists of three Tasks: Task #1 is titled "Internal plasma assisted combustion controlled by improved plasma generators in metal channel at conditions similar to Scramjet"; Task #2 is tilted "External plasma combustion experiment in a supersonic flow (Mtilde2, Pst=1 Bar)". This is a study of flow around model F with plasma combustion generator in wind tunnel; Task #3 is tilted "Study of supersonic flow around model E with combined plasma generator (PG Comb= PG HF +E beam)". Here. the main plasma parameters could be changed independently in PG- Comb. Electron concentration will be controlled by E-beam. Electron temperature could be controlled by external HF electric field. The main goals of this work is a study of following: Optimal radical generation in fuel/air mixture and combustion control by non equilibrium plasmoids, Advanced mixture of fuel in gas flow by structural plasmoids.

Book Temperature Distributions of a Cesium seeded Hydrogen oxygen Supersonic Free Jet

Download or read book Temperature Distributions of a Cesium seeded Hydrogen oxygen Supersonic Free Jet written by S. Y. Wang and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hydrogen-oxygen plasma was generated at combustion chamber pressures ranging from 0.5 to 2.0 megapascals and for various seed ratios (1 to 10 percent). The plasma was observed as the atmospheric exhaust from a Mach 2 rocket test facility. Transverse profiles of the absolute integrated intensity were measured with the optically thin CsI lines (0.5664 and 0.5636 microns) at a range of axial positions downstream of the 5-cm-diameter combustor nozzle exit. Radial profiles of the emission coefficient were obtained from the measured transverse profiles of intensity by Abel inversion. Temperatures were then determined from the emission coefficients for conditions of local thermodynamic equilibrium using particle densities generated by a two-dimensional free jet computer program. Temperature results show the inherent effects of compression and expansion pressure waves characteristic of a free jet exiting from a supersonic nozzle.

Book A Preliminary Study of Stationary Shock induced Combustion with Hydrogen air Mixtures

Download or read book A Preliminary Study of Stationary Shock induced Combustion with Hydrogen air Mixtures written by R. P. Rhodes and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DESCRIPTORS: Rocket motors *Hydrogen, *Air, *Combustion, *Ignition, Gases, Shock waves, Fuel injection, Fuel injectors, Supersonic flow, Schlieren photography, Mixtures, Combustion cham ers, Combustion chamber gas s. A study of the shock-induced combustion of hydrogen-air mixtures was made in a small Mach number 3 wind tunnel at a total pressure level of 45 psia. Combustion was induced by a normal shock wave which resulted from the interaction of two oblique shock wave produced by wedges on the tunnel walls. Significantly different phenomena were observed when the fuel injector was moved from the subsonic portion of the n zzle into the throat. With fuel injection in the throat, ignition denoted by emission glow from the sodium introduced with the hydrogen did not occur until some distance downstream of the normal shock wave. Some data are presented showing this delay as a function of the static temperature behind the shock wave. (A thor).
