Book Superconducting Multicell Cavity Development Program at Los Alamos

Download or read book Superconducting Multicell Cavity Development Program at Los Alamos written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The superconducting rf (SCRF) cavity Development Program at Los Alamos has designed, fabricated, and tested single-cell niobium cavities at 3-GHz and 805-MHz. This work is being done in preparation for procuring and testing a multicell niobium cavity. The multicell cavity is designed to accelerate protons at [beta] = 0.9; initial tests will be without beam. Progammmatic changes have required us to modify our plans to install a 6800-liter helium cryostat and a 12.8-g/s helium pump. We will use an installed cryostat to test the multicell cavity. Also, the cavity will be modified from a seven-cell to a four-cell structure to match the dimensions of the installed cryostat. Previous reports concentrated on 3-GHz results. In this paper, some of the latest results of the 805-MHz cavity tests are presented. Modifications to allow high pulsed power (HPP) testing on 805-MHz single- and four-cell cavities are proceeding. Glow discharge cleaning of an 805-MHz niobium cavity resulted in a decrease in cavity performance. The cavity was restored to previous performance levels with buffered chemical polishing (bcp). Initial results with high-pressure water cleaning show the process is useful in restoring cavity performance.

Book Medium beta Superconducting Cavity Tests at Los Alamos National Laboratory for High current Proton Accelerators

Download or read book Medium beta Superconducting Cavity Tests at Los Alamos National Laboratory for High current Proton Accelerators written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Single-cell superconducting cavities are currently being evaluated for use in high-current proton accelerator applications being developed at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The designs that have been evaluated so far include 0.48 and 0.64 beta cavities. The parameters that have been checked are: peak surface electric field, magnetic quench field, multipacting levels, cavity Q, and propensity for Q disease. In limited tests to date, peak surface fields of 43 MV/m, and quench fields up to 103 mT have been achieved. Q0 values have been typically 1 x 101° at 2 K, with a reduction of about 30% after being held at 150 K for two hours. While some conditioning barriers were eliminated, no obvious multipactor zones were found.

Book Test Results for a Heat treated 4 cell 805 MHz Superconducting Cavity

Download or read book Test Results for a Heat treated 4 cell 805 MHz Superconducting Cavity written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assessing superconducting technology for potential upgrades to existing proton accelerators as well as applications to future high-current machines necessitates developing expertise in the processing and handling of multicell cavities at useful frequencies. In order to address some of these technological issues, Los Alamos has purchased a 4-cell 805-MHz superconducting cavity from Siemens AG. The individual cavity cells were double-sided titanium heat-treated after equatorial welding, then the irises were welded to complete the cavity assembly. The resulting high RRR (residual resistance ratio) in the cells enables stable operation at higher cavity field levels than are possible with lower RRR material. Additionally, the high thermal conductivity of the material is conducive to rf and high peak power processing. The cavity was also cleaned at Los Alamos with high-pressure water rinsing. Results from the initial cavity tests, utilizing various processing techniques, are presented.

Book Progress on the Development of a Superconducting Connection for Niobium Cavities

Download or read book Progress on the Development of a Superconducting Connection for Niobium Cavities written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The availability of a superconducting connection between adjacent niobium radio-frequency (RF) cavities with the capability to carry up to 30 mT of the magnetic flux would be particularly of great benefit to layouts of long accelerators like the International Linear Collider (ILC). It would shorten the distances between structures and therefore the total length of an accelerator with the associated cost reductions. In addition, the superconducting connection would be ideal for a superstructure - two multi-cell cavities connected through a half wavelength long beam pipe providing the coupling. Two single-cell niobium cavities have been designed with Nb-1Zr flanges welded to one of the irises to allow a connection between them with a niobium gasket. A transition to the normal-conducting state of the connection due to the applied RF field causes a reduction of the cavities' quality factor. The cavity design will be presented in this contribution along with possible choices of materials for the joint.

Book Reviews Of Accelerator Science And Technology Volume 5 Applications Of Superconducting Technology To Accelerators

Download or read book Reviews Of Accelerator Science And Technology Volume 5 Applications Of Superconducting Technology To Accelerators written by Alexander Wu Chao and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013-01-28 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past several decades major advances in accelerators have resulted from breakthroughs in accelerator science and accelerator technology. After the introduction of a new accelerator physics concept or the implementation of a new technology, a leap in accelerator performance followed. A well-known representation of these advances is the Livingston chart, which shows an exponential growth of accelerator performance over the last seven or eight decades. One of the breakthrough accelerator technologies that support this exponential growth is superconducting technology. Recognizing this major technological advance, we dedicate Volume 5 of Reviews of Accelerator Science and Technology (RAST) to superconducting technology and its applications. Two major applications are superconducting magnets (SC magnets) and superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities. SC magnets provide much higher magnetic field than their room-temperature counterparts, thus allowing accelerators to reach higher energies with comparable size as well as much reduced power consumption. SRF technology allows field energy storage for continuous wave applications and energy recovery, in addition to the advantage of tremendous power savings and better particle beam quality. In this volume, we describe both technologies and their applications. We also include discussion of the associated R&D in superconducting materials and the future prospects for these technologies.
