In childhood Maggie resorts to various retaliatory behaviors but cannot free herself completely from the weakness of Bessy Tulliver. In the final book of the novel, although Maggie is punished by the symbolic unleashing of her mother's repressed rage, she becomes the maternal rescuer through heroic self-sacrifice.
