Book Super Sitka for the 90s

Download or read book Super Sitka for the 90s written by Great Britain. Forestry Commission and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 50 per cent of current planting of upland forest in the UK is Sitka spruce. Major areas of research on this species has sought to increase growth rates and timber yields, mainly through making genetically improved planting stock available to the forest grower. This publication is comprised of edited presentations made at a meeting in Elgin in 1990. Each paper addresses a separate issue relevant to the development of one of the most important species in upland forestry at the present time.

Book Ecology and Management of Sitka Spruce

Download or read book Ecology and Management of Sitka Spruce written by N. Merle Peterson and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sitka spruce, the largest of the world's spruces, is an important component of British Columbia's coastal forests. Its ecology gives it a special place in the sustainable management of the province's forests. However, in west coast forestry it is poorly known in comparison with its main coniferous companions -- Douglas-fir, western redcedar, and western hemlock. As an important international forestry resource, it is crucial that Sitka spruce -- its ecology and the ecosystems in which it occurs -- be clearly understood by those who are involved with its management.

Book Biology of Adventitious Root Formation

Download or read book Biology of Adventitious Root Formation written by Tim D. Davis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles E. Hess Department of Environmental Horticulture University of California Davis, CA 95616 Research in the biology of adventitious root formation has a special place in science. It provides an excellent forum in which to pursue fundamental research on the regulation of plant growth and development. At the same time the results of the research have been quickly applied by commercial plant propagators, agronomists, foresters and horticulturists (see the chapter by Kovar and Kuchenbuch, by Ritchie, and by Davies and coworkers in this volume). In an era when there is great interest in speeding technology transfer, the experiences gained in research in adventitious root formation may provide useful examples for other areas of science. Interaction between the fundamental and the applied have been and continue to be facilitated by the establishment, in 1951, of the Plant Propagators' Society, which has evolved into the International Plant Propagators' Society, with active programs in six regions around the world. It is a unique organization which brings together researchers in universities, botanical gardens and arboreta, and commercial plant propagators. In this synergistic environment new knowledge is rapidly transferred and new ideas for fundamental research evolve from the presentations and discussions by experienced plant propagators. In the past 50 years, based on research related to the biology of adventitious root formation, advances in plant propagation have been made on two major fronts.

Book Cultural Turns Geographical Turns

Download or read book Cultural Turns Geographical Turns written by Simon Naylor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduces undergraduates to the key debates regarding space and culture and the key theoretical arguments which guide cultural geographical work. This book addresses the impact, significance, and characteristics of the 'cultural turn' in contemporary geography. It focuses on the development of the cultural geography subdiscipline and on what has made it a peculiar and unique realm of study. It demonstrates the importance of culture in the development of debates in other subdisciplines within geography and beyond. In line with these previous themes, the significance of space in the production of cultural values and expressions is also developed. Along with its timely examination of the health of the cultural geographical subdiscipline, this book is to be valued for its analysis of the impact of cultural theory on studies elsewhere in geography and of ideas of space and spatiality elsewhere in the social sciences.

  • Author : Peter Savill
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, UK
  • Release : 1997-09-18
  • ISBN : 0191590460
  • Pages : 310 pages

Download or read book Plantation Silviculture in Europe written by Peter Savill and published by Oxford University Press, UK. This book was released on 1997-09-18 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plantation Silviculture in Europe provides an up-to-date, succinct, and comprehensive overview of current European plantation forestry practices. Recognising that plantation silviculture today is no longer largely a question of how to grow large-scale industrial plantations, the authors have included chapters describing other, more diverse reasons for establishing trees. Forestry practices are set in the context of the science behind them and their environmental, social and policy frameworks. Concise and clear, this will be essential reading for forestry students and professionals alike. - ;As pressures to preserve natural forest resources have increased, plantation forestry and its study have gained in importance. Plantation Silviculture in Europe is an up-to-date, timely, and comprehensive exploration of the principles that underlie the planting and maintaining of forest resources. Based on the excellent reception of Savill and Evans' Plantation Silviculture in Temperate Regions (OUP, 1986), which was largely UK-based, the inclusion of two European authors ensures that the scope of this new book extends across the entire continent. Plantation Silviculture in Europe provides a thorough overview of the central aspects of conventional plantation forestry, covering site preparation, choice of species, establishment and maintenance, nutrition, spacing, thinning and pruning, and protection. In addition, it acknowledges the changing emphasis and increasing diversity of contemporary forestry, and includes chapters on community woodlands, urban forests, plantings for amenity and sport, and energy crops. Throughout, an attempt is made to set practices in the context of the ecological and biological forest processes which underpin them. Plantation Silviculture also incorporates discussion of the many environmental, social and policy issues that surround forestry today. Concise and clearly written, this will be essential reading for graduate and undergraduate forestry students and forestry professionals alike. Likely to become the standard text throughout Europe, it also contains much material of relevance to foresters in North America, East Asia, and Australasia. -

Book Geographic Variation in Forest Trees

Download or read book Geographic Variation in Forest Trees written by Maria Morgenstern and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geographic Variation in Forest Trees is the first book to examine this subject from a world-wide perspective. The author discusses population genetic theory and genetic systems of native North American tree species as they interact with environments in the major climatic regions in the world. He then demonstrates how this knowledge is used to guide seed zoning and seed transfer in silviculture, basing much of his discussion on models developed in Scandinavia and North America. In the final chapter, the author addresses the issue of genetic conservation -- a subject of great concern in the face of accelerated forest destruction, industrial pollution, and climatic change. This comprehensive, well-researched book makes a significant contribution to the knowledge of one of our most important renewable natural resources.

Book Nature Landscape and People Since the Second World War

Download or read book Nature Landscape and People Since the Second World War written by T. Christopher Smout and published by John Donald. This book was released on 2001 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 1999, a conference to celebrate the half-century of the 1949 National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act was hosted by the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Upon this legislation rested the establishment of National Parks in England and Wales and of the Nature Conservancy throughout Great Britain. The papers gathered here, all by major players on the scene, look back over fifty years of countryside management and nature conservation, assess the current situation, and look forward to prospects for the future. They range from consideration of the origins of the 1949 Act to recalling major incidents and pressures such as the toxic chemical scares of the 1960s, the pressures from post-war forestry and the problems of managing the rising tide of countryside recreation. The changing nature of ecology is examined, along with public attitudes to the environment. The book concludes with a series of forward looks relating to the natural world in Britain, and our enjoyment of it, in the 21st century.
