Book Shiloh In Hell Before Night

Download or read book Shiloh In Hell Before Night written by and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colorful, dramatic, blundering, and tragic - these are some of the adjectives that have been applied to the two-day engagement at Shiloh. This battle, which bears the biblical name meaning "place of peace," was one of the bloodiest encounters of the Civil War. The Union colonel, whose words give the present book its title, foretold the losses when he told his men: "Fill your canteens Boys! Some of you will be in hell before night...." Fought in the early spring of 1862 on the west bank of the Mississippi state line, Shiloh was, up to that time, the biggest battle of American history. One hundred thousand men were involved, and major Civil War commanders such as Grant, Sherman, Johnston, Beauregard, Bragg, and Forrest participated. The battle took the life of Johnston and it left a lasting impact on the reputation of other commanders. More-over, it played a significant role in the campaign for control of the Mississippi Valley. Although hundreds of books have been written about the Civil War and its battle, questions about the disorganized struggle at Shiloh have continued to perplex historians. Why was Grant absent when his army was attacked? Why did Grant and Sherman apparently ignore evidence of a Confederate advance? What happened to Lew Wallace that he never got his division into the fight on the first day of battle? Why did it take the Rebels so long to make their way from Corinth to the battlefield? Did the Rebels really have a distinct opportunity to win the battle, as it seems in retrospect, or were they doomed from the start? Were Johnston and Beauregard working at cross-purposes? Shiloh-In Hell Before Night provides answers or clues to answers of clues to answers for these and other questions arising from this controversial engagement. The author tells his story by placing Shiloh in the larger context of the war and by exploring the very personal side of the conflict through the words of the Union and Confederate participants, officers and common soldiers alike. Touches of humor and even or romance are revealed in the midst of the carnage, but the overriding element is the specter of death. Among those who survived, the soldiers who had been eager to "see the elephant," as they commonly referred to combat, could never again feel so eager for a fight. James Lee McDonough is professor of history at Auburn University, and the author of Stones River - Bloody Winter in Tennessee, Chattanooga - A Death Grip on the Confederacy, and the co-author of Five Tragic Hours: The Battle of Franklin.

Download or read book The Devil s Own Day written by John Beatty and published by . This book was released on 2023-06-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring of 1862, three green armies clashed in the Tennessee pine barrens near an obscure flatboat landing on the Tennessee River. Desperate to stop two Union armies from joining forces-and by so doing, to prove his worth to the Confederacy, Albert S. Johnston, with Pierre G. T. Beauregard, led the 40,000 man Army of Mississippi north from Corinth, Mississippi. It didn't help that Johnston and Beauregard didn't trust each other, nor that their army, collected from all over the South, had never fought-let alone marched-together... Planning an advance on Corinth, Ulysses S. Grant and the Army of West Tennessee waited near the trading hamlet of Pittsburg Landing on the west side of the Tennessee River, near a small church called Shiloh, anticipating the arrival of Don C. Buell and the Army of the Ohio. It didn't help that Buell hated Grant, thought they barely knew each other... On 6 April 1862, the Confederates, most of whom hadn't eaten in days, stumbled into the Federal camps in the dark of night. By sunrise, a fifth of Grant's army had become casualties, but Grant himself wasn't there...yet... By sunset, the die was cast for a different future for America... This encounter-two days of fighting that produced over twenty-thousand casualties-was the first major battle of a war that was projected to last only six months. Instead, it dragged on for three more years, and changed the American way of war forever. The Devil's Own Day: Shiloh and The American Civil War is a careful examination of this pivotal battle, from the co-author of Why The Samurai Lost Japan: A Study in Miscalculation and Folly, and the creator of The Stella's Game Trilogy.

Book excerpt: Shiloh wasn’t a typical omega… He liked his boots tall, his shirts short and his Alpha’s big and bad. He gives just as good as he takes, and he could ride a cowboy like a devil. Working at the pleasure house in Wolf’s Canyon, Shiloh was content with his life in the town of Westminster that’s until he finally met his match. Michael Cox was a stone-cold killer. A ruthless bounty hunter with a wiry grin, smoking hot body, and legs that would make even a bull shudder. Shiloh knew he was in for the ride of his life when Michael came to his bed. It ends just as quickly as it starts and Michael Cox disappears like doused smoke from a fire. Good riddance. Even though Shiloh’s heart had beaten out of his chest at the mere sight of the black leather-clad Alpha, with his wicked guns and dimpled grin, Michael Cox was the sweetest sin. In the South, we take our whiskey neat, and our scars with a dose of pride. Shiloh was getting on just fine without him until he was taken in the middle of the night by Michael’s sworn enemies. Can Shiloh survive? Or will Michael have to unleash the animal inside him to get his Omega back? Warning: this is an M/M cowboy shifter gay romance, that deals with mature themes such as discussions of assault and violence, please be advised.

Book Shiloh

Download or read book Shiloh written by Shelby Foote and published by . This book was released on 1952 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historian and Civil War expert Shelby Foote delivers a spare, unflinching account of the battle of Shiloh, which was fought over the course of two days in April 1862. By mirroring the troops' movements through the woods of Tennessee with the activity of each soldier's mind, Foote offers the reader a broad perspective of the battle and a detailed view of the issues behind it. The battle becomes tangible as Foote interweaves the observations of Union and Confederate officers, simple foot soldiers, brave men, and cowards and describes the roar of the muskets and the haze of the gun smoke. The author's vivid storytelling creates a rich chronicle of a pivotal battle in American history.
