  • Pages : 220 pages

Download or read book A Legacy of Art written by Carol Lowrey and published by Hudson Hills. This book was released on 2007 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a century, a Gilded Age mansion on the south side of New York City's Gramercy Park has been home to the National Arts Club (NAC), its magnificent interior a refuge from hectic city life. In this special catalog, Lowrey, curator of the club's permanent collection, documents selected works by Artist Life Members, artists who were given lifetime memberships in the club in exchange for one of their works (the program ended in 1950 with the advent of the abstract expressionists). The father of well-known American sculptor Alexander Calder, Alexander Stirling Calder, was an Artist Life Member, and his sculpture of the painter George Bellows is among the many artworks included here. Also featured are an A-to-Z listing of Artist Life Members and a brief history of the NAC. The catalog section includes full-color reproductions and descriptions of the artworks as well as brief biographies of the artist. Many members' works show European influences, particularly impressionism and the Barbizon school, while others are distinctly American, as in the Ash Can school. A fine and fitting tribute to the NAC legacy that will be of interest to club, academic, and large public libraries. 75 colour & 175 b/w illustrations

Book The Business of Watercolour

Download or read book The Business of Watercolour written by Simon Fenwick and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1997, this volume will revolutionise the study of watercolour painting in Britain. The Royal Watercolour Society archive constitutes a major academic resource covering two hundred years of the history of watercolour painting in Britain. The rediscovery in 1980 of ‘the Jenkins Papers’, the early records of the Society, was a major find for the history of British art. The archives are substantial and remarkably comprehensive. Minutes of annual general meetings, Council and committees, are all intact; extraordinarily, the Society’s catalogues for its own exhibitions have also survived, with details of who bought the pictures and for how much. It contains biographical information on several hundred artists who practised throughout the United Kingdom from the end of the eighteenth century to the present day. Prepared by the archivist to the RWS, Simon Fenwick, this is not just a work of reference, but an absorbing book to dip into again and again. The Society of Painters in Water Colours, as it was then titled, was founded in 1804 to promote the interests of painters using watercolour and to provide a platform for members to sell their work. As such, its archives provide an excellent insight into the evolving debate on the status of the artists and their medium, and an authoritative account of the way in which watercolour paintings were sold, distributed and acquired. The substantial introduction by Greg Smith surveys some of the purposes and practices of watercolour from 1750 to the present day and highlights key issues, many yet to be examined, relating to the study of watercolour. His survey is arranged around a number of topics including the notion of watercolour as a British art, collecting and display, book illustration, architectural drawing, map-making and topography, antiquarian studies, decorative arts, printmaking, portrait miniatures and drawings, amateur practices and the changing status of the sketch.

  • Publisher : Yale University Press

  • Pages : 614 pages

Download or read book Sickert written by Wendy Baron and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walter Richard Sickert (1860-1942) was an artist of prodigious creativity. For sixty years, in his roles as painter, teacher, and polemicist, he was a source of inspiration and influence to successive generations of British painters. With his roots in the Victorian era, Sickert broke all taboos. He was uncompromisingly truthful, revealing beauty in the squalid as in the sublime: in cockney music halls, the crumbling streets of Dieppe, the grand sites of Venice, and the low-life of Camden Town. Decades before Warhol, he exploited the potential of photo-based imagery and of studio production lines to create iconic portraits of the grandees of theatrical, social, and political life. This catalogue is divided into two parts: essay chapters describe Sickert's chronology in terms of stylistic and technical development, and a fully illustrated catalogue presents more than 2800 drawings and paintings, many of which have never been published before.

Book Whistler and Artistic Exchange between Japan and the West

Download or read book Whistler and Artistic Exchange between Japan and the West written by Ayako Ono and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ono examines cross-cultural artistic exchange between the West and Japan from the late nineteenth century to the early twentieth century. Studies of Japonisme have been dominated by searching out relationships of influence between artworks–trying to identify which specific works influenced a particular artist. Ono argues that a more holistic understanding of 'spillover effects' is necessary in fully comprehending the nuances of these relationships. She bases this argument on documents and works of art in the context of globalisation, looking at the relationships between James McNeill Whistler and others with their contemporaries in the Japanese artistic and literary worlds. This was a more complex two-way exchange than is often appreciated, with Western artists taking inspiration from (to them) new Japanese styles, while Japanese artists and writers were trying to craft a 'modern', more western-influences style to reflect the modern nation of Japan emerging onto the world stage after centuries of relative isolation. A fascinating analysis of the role of globalisation and cultural exchange in the development of new and hybrid artforms, that will be essential reading for scholars of this fascinating period in international art history.
