National estimates put the student attrition rate before tenth grade at between 11 and 33 percent, and only about 70 percent of ninth graders make it to graduation. This policy brief focuses on one type of activity that is designed to help eighth-grade students make a successful transition to high school: eighth-grade summer bridge programs. These programs are similar in concept to their counterparts for aspiring college bound students who may benefit from extra support. Students are identified and recruited into a summer program that offers academic remediation, social support, and orientation activities that are designed to enhance their ability to succeed during their freshman year. As part of a comprehensive transition approach, summer bridge programs can be a promising practice for school administrators and policymakers to consider. Design and policy issues discussed include: (1) Determining the student population; (2) Creating the curriculum; (3) Staffing the program; (4) Instituting a code of conduct; (5) Assessing the program; and (6) Offering special incentives. Book excerpt: "Summer bridge programs" are designed to ease the transition to college and support postsecondary success by providing students with the academic skills and social resources needed to succeed in a college environment. These programs occur in the summer "bridge" period between high school and college. Although the content of summer bridge programs can vary across institutions and by the population served, they typically last 2-4 weeks and involve (a) an in-depth orientation to college life and resources, (b) academic advising, (c) training in skills necessary for college success (e.g., time management and study skills), and/or (d) accelerated academic coursework. The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) identified one study of "summer bridge programs" that both falls within the scope of the Supporting Postsecondary Success topic area and meets WWC group design standards. This study meets WWC group design standards with reservations. The study included 2,222 undergraduate students enrolled at Georgia Tech. Based on the study, "summer bridge programs" were found to have potentially positive effects on postsecondary attainment for postsecondary students. Over the ten-year period chronicled in these essays, she has seen herself primarily as an advocate for such students, sometimes called "basic writers."Bizzell's views on education for "critical consciousness," widely discussed in the writing field, are represented in most of the essays in this volume.
