Book Oahu Wind Integration and Transmission Study

Download or read book Oahu Wind Integration and Transmission Study written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrating large amounts of variable renewable energy such as wind or solar into an electrical grid is challenging because of the variability of the power output. Previous "wind integration" studies have been performed over the last several years to examine the technical aspects of integrating large amounts of wind power into the bulk electrical grids in the United States and Europe. The methodologies and lessons learned from these studies were applied to the Oahu grid, which is even more challenging because it has a significantly smaller load. This study, the Oahu Wind Integration and Transmission Study (OWITS), was composed of several smaller studies and was sponsored jointly by the Hawaiian Electric Company, the state of Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development, and Tourism (DBEDT), and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

Book The Western Wind and Solar Integration Study Phase 2 Executive Summary

Download or read book The Western Wind and Solar Integration Study Phase 2 Executive Summary written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The electric grid is a highly complex, interconnected machine, and changing one part of the grid can have consequences elsewhere. Adding wind and solar affects the operation of the other power plants and adding high penetrations can induce cycling of fossil-fueled generators. Cycling leads to wear-and-tear costs and changes in emissions. Phase 2 of the Western Wind and Solar Integration Study (WWSIS-2) evaluated these costs and emissions and simulated grid operations for a year to investigate the detailed impact of wind and solar on the fossil-fueled fleet. This built on Phase 1, one of the largest wind and solar integration studies ever conducted, which examined operational impacts of high wind and solar penetrations in the West(GE Energy 2010).
