Book excerpt: "Files provide Census 2000 data summaries for two types of state legislative district (SLD) boundaries: upper chamber and lower chamber. Statistics on 100-percent and sample population and housing subjects are presented for all states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. For Nebraska, which has a unicameral legislature, data are presented as upper chamber only. For the District of Columbia, data also are presented as upper chamber only. Geographic areas within SLD are county, county subdivision, place, state portion of American Indian and Alaska Native area, and Hawaiian home land. States provided updated boundaries in 2005/2006 as part of Phase 1 of the 2010 Census Redistricting Data Program. Please note that the state legislative districts shown in these files reflect the redistricting that occurred following Census 2000 and therefore differ from those shown in the Census 2000 Redistricting Data (Public Law 94-171) Summary File. The 100-Percent File contains data collected for all people and housing units, as reflected by the Census 2000 short-form questionnaire (PDF - 424 KB) covers the same basic subject characteristics as Summary File 1. Book excerpt: Public Law 94-171, enacted in 1975, directs the United States Census Bureau to make special preparations to provide redistricting data needed by the 50 states. It specifies that within one year following the Census Day (i.e., for Census 2000 by April 1, 2001), the Census Bureau must send the governor and legislature in each state the data they need to redraw districts for the United States Congress and state legislatures. The National file provides data in a hierarchical sequence down to the block level (state, county, voting district/remainder, county subdivision, place/remainder, census tract, block group, block). The file contains four tables : (1) a count of all persons by race (Table PL1), (2) a count of Hispanic or Latino and a count of not Hispanic or Latino by race of all persons (Table PL2), (3) a count of the population 18 years and older by race (Table PL3), and (4) a count of Hispanic or Latino and a count of not Hispanic or Latino by race for the population 18 years and older (Table PL4) ...
