Book excerpt: From one of contemporary literature’s bestselling, critically acclaimed, and beloved authors: a “luminous” novel (Jennifer Egan, The New York Times Book Review) about a fiercely compelling young widow navigating grief, fear, and longing, and finding her own voice—“heartrendingly transcendant” (The New York Times, Janet Maslin). Set in Wexford, Ireland, Colm Tóibín’s magnificent seventh novel introduces the formidable, memorable, and deeply moving Nora Webster. Widowed at forty, with four children and not enough money, Nora has lost the love of her life, Maurice, the man who rescued her from the stifling world to which she was born. And now she fears she may be sucked back into it. Wounded, selfish, strong-willed, clinging to secrecy in a tiny community where everyone knows your business, Nora is drowning in her own sorrow and blind to the suffering of her young sons, who have lost their father. Yet she has moments of stunning insight and empathy, and when she begins to sing again, after decades, she finds solace, engagement, a haven—herself. Nora Webster “may actually be a perfect work of fiction” (Los Angeles Times), by a “beautiful and daring” writer (The New York Times Book Review) at the zenith of his career, able to “sneak up on readers and capture their imaginations” (USA TODAY). “Miraculous...Tóibín portrays Nora with tremendous sympathy and understanding” (Ron Charles, The Washington Post).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Impressive . . . [Cristina García’s] story is about three generations of Cuban women and their separate responses to the revolution. Her special feat is to tell it in a style as warm and gentle as the ‘sustaining aromas of vanilla and almond,’ as rhythmic as the music of Beny Moré.”—Time Cristina García’s acclaimed book is the haunting, bittersweet story of a family experiencing a country’s revolution and the revelations that follow. The lives of Celia del Pino and her husband, daughters, and grandchildren mirror the magical realism of Cuba itself, a landscape of beauty and poverty, idealism and corruption. Dreaming in Cuban is “a work that possesses both the intimacy of a Chekov story and the hallucinatory magic of a novel by Gabriel García Márquez” (The New York Times). In celebration of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the novel’s original publication, this edition features a new introduction by the author. Praise for Dreaming in Cuban “Remarkable . . . an intricate weaving of dramatic events with the supernatural and the cosmic . . . evocative and lush.”—San Francisco Chronicle “Captures the pain, the distance, the frustrations and the dreams of these family dramas with a vivid, poetic prose.”—The Washington Post “Brilliant . . . With tremendous skill, passion and humor, García just may have written the definitive story of Cuban exiles and some of those they left behind.”—The Denver Post

Book Handbook of Critical Incident Analysis

Download or read book Handbook of Critical Incident Analysis written by Richard W Schwester and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-18 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical incidents all too often explode onto the social conscious and challenge our sense of security. This comprehensive handbook brings together a range of experts who provide a foundation for the field of critical incident analysis by examining specific incidents9/11, the Virginia Tech massacre, the H1N1 pandemic, the BP oil spill, and more--through various methodological and disciplinary lenses. This groundbreaking book develops a new organizational theory derived from ideas in statistics and psychometrics. The author's core premise is that errors known to occur in social science research must also occur when managers look at their data and seek to make inferences about cause and effect. Statistico-organizational theory uses methodological principles to predict when errors occur and how great they will be. Expanding on this concept, The Meta-Analytic Organization offers new theoretical propositions about organizational strategy and structure with wide application to human resource management, international business, and more.

This book was released on 2023-01-20 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The IPPC Implementation Review and Support System (IRSS) has held two general surveys among national plant protection organizations (NPPOs) to review contracting parties’ implementation of the IPPC and its standards. Data from both surveys that took place in 2012 and 2016 were analysed separately (IPPC Secretariat, 2014; 2017), but a comparative data analysis was never performed. As part of the preparations for the third general survey, the IRSS decided to re-analyse the existing data and conduct a comparative analysis, in order to establish the value of the collected information and determine which elements of the previous questionnaires to retain. Specifically, the objectives of this study were to:critically assess the questionnaires of the 2012 and 2016 surveys; evaluate the comparability between the 2012 and 2016 questionnaires; review the existing analysis reports; re-analyse the 2012 and 2016 results; conduct a comparative analysis of the 2012 and 2016 data to establish whether changes in implementation of the Convention can be determined.

Book Electrochemical Analysis Section Summary of Activities July 1967 to June 1968

Download or read book Electrochemical Analysis Section Summary of Activities July 1967 to June 1968 written by Roger Gordon Bates and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brief summaries of several lines of work under way are given. The review describes briefly new equipment and facilities acquired during the year. A major effort devoted to acidity measurements has led to new pH standards and new reference solutions for pD in heavy water. Solvent effects on acid-base phenomena in mixed solvents have shed some light on the factors, including solvent structure, governing ion-solvent interactions. A start was made on the study of ion-specific electrodes and the establishment of standard scales for ionic activity. Equilibrium data for hydrochloric acid in 92.41 wt. percent ethanol and for the ionization of carbonic acid in heavy water were obtained. The establishment of conductance standards for oceanographic research was begun. The survey concludes with lists of the members of the Section staff, publications and manuscripts produced during the year, talks given by the staff, and committee assignments. (Author).

Book An Introduction to Critical Discourse Analysis in Education

Download or read book An Introduction to Critical Discourse Analysis in Education written by Rebecca Rogers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-04-06 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accessible yet theoretically rich, this landmark text introduces key concepts and issues in critical discourse analysis and situates these within the field of educational research.
