Book Sumerian Hymns and Prayers to God Nin Ib From the Temple Library of Nippur Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sumerian Hymns and Prayers to God Nin Ib From the Temple Library of Nippur Classic Reprint written by Hugo Radau and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-25 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sumerian Hymns and Prayers to God Nin-Ib From the Temple Library of Nippur It was my original intention to publish in this volume about 28 plates in auto graph. But as will happen occasionally in connection with difficult cuneiform inscriptions, after a detailed examination and analysis, a scholar will change his mind with regard to this or that particular inscription in question. Several of the tablets which first seemed to me to contain N I N - I B texts proved themselves to be N ergal compositions, historical texts, etc., while others remained doubtful as to the god addressed in them. Anxious to offer only indisputable N I N - I B texts, I excluded all inscriptions in which the name of this deity could not be ascertained with absolute certainty. The excavations of Nippur, of course, have yielded a good many more nin-ib texts than here published. But it was the intention of the Editor and the writer to issue at once those texts which had been catalogued and, moreover, were excavated during the earlier expeditions, in order to put before scholars some of the material which furnished the key to the contention of the existence of the now rightly famous Temple Library. The fact, therefore, that only 15 plates of auto graph texts are published in this volume does not by any means indicate that the Temple Library of Nippur is exhausted as regards N IN - IB texts. Variety of texts is what seems to be desired above everything else at present. Shorter volumes following each other in quick succession are demanded. As soon as the variety of the contents of the library has been demonstrated, the Editor and the Publication Committee expect to return to the old method hitherto employed by them. Book Sumerian Liturgies and Psalms

Download or read book Sumerian Liturgies and Psalms written by Stephen Herbert Langdon and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the publication of the texts included in this the last part of volume X, Sumerian Liturgical and Epical Texts, the writer arrives at a definite stage in the interpretation of the religious material in the Nippur collection. Having been privileged to examine the collection in Philadelphia as well as that in Constantinople, I write with a sense of responsibility in giving to the public a brief statement concerning what the temple library of ancient Nippur really contained. Omitting the branches pertaining to history, law, grammar and mathematics, the following résumé is limited to those tablets which, because of their bearing upon the history of religion, especially upon the origins of Hebrew religion, have attracted the attention of the public on two continents to the collections of the University Museum. Undoubtedly the group of texts which have the most human interest and greatest literary value is the epical group, designated in Sumerian by the rubric zag-sal. This literary term was employed by the Sumerian scribes to designate a composition as didactic and theological. Religious texts of such kind are generally composed in an easy and graceful style and, although somewhat influenced by liturgical mannerisms, may be readily distinguished from the hymns and psalms sung in the temples to musical accompaniment. The zagsal compositions are mythological and theological treatises concerning the deeds and characters of the great gods. The most important didactic hymns of the Nippur collection and in fact the most important religious texts in early Sumerian literature are two six column tablets, one (very incomplete) on the Creation and the Flood published by Dr. Poebel, and one (all but complete) on Paradise and the Fall of Man.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gods honored in the hymns treated in the following Thesis are Bel, Sin (Nannar), Adad (Ramman) and Tammuz, all deities of the old Babylonian pantheon, representing different phases of personality and force, conceived of as incorporated in nature and as affecting the destinies of men. These gods are severally designated in the hymns as follows: in Tablet 13963, Rev. 1, "O Bel of the mountains;" in Tablet 13930, Obv. 2, "O father Nannar;" in Tablet 29631, Obv. 10, "O Ramman, king of heaven"; and in Tablet 29628, Obv. 3, "The lord Tammuz" (CT. XV, 10, 15, 16, 17 and 19). The attributes and deeds belonging to these divinities are adduced from a wide range of literature, beginning with the royal inscriptions of the pre-dynastic periods and ending with the inscriptions of the monarchs of the later Babylonian empire. In fact, the building inscriptions of the Babylonians, the war inscriptions of the Assyrians, the legendary literature, the incantations, as well as the religious collections, particularly the hymns, afford us many descriptions, of greater or less length, of all the Babylonian gods.
