Book excerpt: A Literary mirror is the first English-language work to comprehensively analyse Indonesian-language literature from Bali from a literary and cultural viewpoint. It covers the period from 1920 to 2000. This is an extremely rich field for research into the ways Balinese view their culture and how they respond to external cultural forces. This work complements the large number of existing studies of Bali and its history, anthropology, traditional literature, and the performing arts. A Literary Mirror is an invaluable resource for those researching twentieth-century Balinese authors who wrote in Indonesian. Until now, such writers have received very little attention in the existing literature. An appendix gives short biographical details of many significant writers and lists their work.

Book Adolescents in Contemporary Indonesia

Download or read book Adolescents in Contemporary Indonesia written by Lyn Parker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The youth demographic is a large and growing cohort in Indonesia, and adolescents embody the currents of social change. Throughout the twentieth century they were significant agents of social protest leading to social and political transformation. This book looks at the importance of adolescents in contemporary Indonesia, and how they are spearheading not just globalisation and a growing consumer youth culture, but also the Islamisation movement. The book explores both the inner worlds and social selves of Indonesian adolescents. It presents an in-depth knowledge of Indonesian society and culture in various parts of Indonesia, and discusses national patterns and trends. Grounded in two field sites, the book enables an analysis of young people’s local ethnic and religious identities and their commitment to the Indonesian nation-state. It goes on to look at the physical age bracket of youth, the definitions used by the Indonesian state and other agencies, and the perceptions of youth themselves about adolescence and adulthood. Providing a comprehensive study of young people in contemporary Indonesia, the book addresses gender relations, the importance of education for youth and youth engagement with popular culture, and the moral issue concerning the sexual propriety of young people. It is a useful contribution for students and academics of Asian Studies, Sociology and Cultural Studies.

Book Ideology and Revolution in Southeast Asia 1900 1980

Download or read book Ideology and Revolution in Southeast Asia 1900 1980 written by Clive J Christie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of 'Asian Values' has recently been emphasized by East and South East Asian political leaders. These leaders have argued that European political values have exercised an unhealthy hegemony over the international system, not only because of global influence exercised by European ideas during the colonial period, but because of 'Anglo-Saxon' dominance over the world orders that were set up in the aftermath of both the First and Second World Wars. This book considers the interaction between indigenous ('Asian') values and European ideology and the influence this relationship had on the nationalist and revolutionary movements of Southeast Asia that dominated the political systems of Southeast Asia in the period 1945-1975.

Book The Cavern Mystery Transmission

Download or read book The Cavern Mystery Transmission written by Charles D. Benn and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2019-03-31 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Very little scholarly research has been done on the institutional structure of Taoism in medieval times. With this study of investiture, Benn attempts to fill that void. He describes the mechanism by which the Taoist priesthood ordered and perpetuated itself, as revealed in a rare account of an ordination rite for two T'ang princesses. He examines the lives of the participants, the hierarchy of the clergy, the liturgy, and the significance of the altar and its furnishings, and discusses other works of Chang Wan-fu, who authored this account.

  • ISBN : 0824883764
  • Pages : 181 pages

Download or read book Ilocano Irrigation written by Henry T. Lewis and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2019-09-30 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines some of the major factors—social, demographic, and environmental—that account for the success of communal irrigation in Ilocos Norte and, by implication, its absence in adjacent areas, other parts of the Philippines, and, more widely, in other parts of insular Southeast Asia. However, whether this explanation accounts for all the factors involved, or even adequately weighs those that are here discussed, is secondary to the main concern of this volume: corporate groups. What zanjeras [irrigation societies] show are repeated examples of how individual farmers, working in concert, developed and employed corporate principles to the solution of a common goal or problem. It is a kind of “solution” that has been widely and effectively employed in much of human history.

Book Thailand in Transition

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ross Prizzia
  • Publisher : University of Hawaii Press
  • Release : 2019-03-31
  • ISBN : 082487918X
  • Pages : 145 pages

Download or read book Thailand in Transition written by Ross Prizzia and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2019-03-31 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thailand in Transition goes beyond the conventional approach to Thai politics present in most of the literature, which concentrates on the traditional institutions in Thailand—the monarchy, the military, and the bureaucracy. The objective here has been rather to examine the more contemporary emergent oppositional forces struggling to play a permanent and significant role in the broader context of Thai politics. Oppositional forces in Thailand are many and varied, ranging from the outlawed Communist Party of Thailand (CPT), which seeks to overthrow the Thai government, to the Thai Parliament, which is usually legitimized as part of the the government for brief periods between military coups. The book focuses on the CPT, workers, students, and Parliament by presenting in historical perspective the origins, nature, and influence of each as an oppositional force in Thai politics. Special attention is given to the transitional role of these oppositional forces during and after the dramatic shifts in Thai politics precipitated by the student revolution of 1973, the military coup of 1976, the increased hostilities between the People's Republic of China (PRC) and Vietnam in 1979, and the abortive coup by the Thai "Young Turk" military faction in 1981.
