Book Sulphur Fertilization of Lodgepole Pine

Download or read book Sulphur Fertilization of Lodgepole Pine written by Paul Thomas Sanborn and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widespread sulphur (S) deficiencies have been detected in lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. var. latifolia Engelm.) stands in the Sub-Boreal Spruce biogeoclimatic zone of central interior British Columbia. Field experiments in this region have shown that addition of sulphate-S to nitrogen (N) fertilization treatments rapidly increases foliar S concentrations, and usually improves tree growth responses relative to N-only treatments. However, there is an insufficient scientific basis for choosing this S form over more slowly available elemental S-based fertilizers. To address this knowledge gap, this study was begun in 2001 to compare the behaviour of sulphate-S and elemental-S fertilizers in an area-based fertilizer trial, using stable isotope tracer methods to examine the fate and transformations of fertilizer S. Fertilizer treatments were applied to two lodgepole pine stands, near Fraser Lake (Holy Cross site) and in the Bowron River valley (Kenneth Creek site), in fall 2002. This establishment report reviews background literature relevant to this study, details the experimental design and methods used, and documents the initial soil and stand conditions at the time the experimental treatments were installed. ‍?Pre-treatment analyses indicated that mineral soils at these sites have low total S concentrations, which are typical of the British Columbia central interior and are among the lowest reported in the temperate and boreal zones worldwide. Concentrations of other total and (or) available soil macronutrients (N, Ca, Mg, K, P) were usually higher at the Holy Cross site than at the Kenneth Creek site. Lodgepole pine foliar analyses indicated that S deficiency was more pronounced at the former site. Ratios of background S stable isotopes in lodgepole pine foliage and soils differed sufficiently from those of the applied S fertilizers to make a tracer experiment feasible.

Book Lodgepole Pine Nutrition and Fertilization

Download or read book Lodgepole Pine Nutrition and Fertilization written by Robert Peter Brockley and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summarizes results obtained from 33 lodgepole pine fertilization research installations established at the Kalamalka Forestry Centre in Vernon, British Columbia. Most of the research was conducted in 15- to 35-year-old thinned, fire-origin stands in the montane spruce and sub-boreal spruce biogeoclimatic zones. Results are discussed with regard to such research topics as: pre- and post-fertilization foliar nutrient status; response to nitrogen additions; effects of nitrogen application rate; effects of post-thinning stand density and site index; effects of timing of fertilization and thinning; small-mammal damage; and effects of snow accumulation.

Book Monitoring Forest Damage with Mass Spectrometry Based Metabolomics Methods

Download or read book Monitoring Forest Damage with Mass Spectrometry Based Metabolomics Methods written by Carla Antonio and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-02-21 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understand forest responses to climate change with this timely introduction Forests are among the most critical parts of our global ecosystem, responsible for the air we breathe, home to most of the earth’s species, and crucial sources of food and raw materials. Forest development is therefore one of the most important areas of ecological study, and damage to forests is potentially existential. Metabolomics, a toolkit which accrues data on interactions between genetic and environmental conditions, promises to advance our understanding of how these vital ecosystems respond to dramatic changes in climate and environment. Monitoring Forest Damage with Mass Spectrometry-Based Metabolomics Methods offers a thorough, accessible discussion of metabolomic techniques and their applications in forest tree research. It promises to enrich the reader’s understanding of how forests are being transformed by globe-spanning changes, and to arm researchers with tools for reacting to these potentially epochal developments. Monitoring Forest Damage with Mass Spectrometry-Based Metabolomics Methods readers will also find: Analysis of specialized secondary metabolites such as phytohormones Detailed discussion of ecologically important tree genera such as Pinus, Populus, Quercus, and many more Supplementary materials related to study design, sample preparation, and instrumental analysis protocols Monitoring Forest Damage with Mass Spectrometry-Based Metabolomics Methods is ideal for researchers in analytical chemistry, mass spectrometry, metabolomics, forest research, the life sciences, and all other related fields.

Book Effects of Acid Precipitation on Terrestrial Ecosystems

Download or read book Effects of Acid Precipitation on Terrestrial Ecosystems written by Thomas C. Hutchinson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains papers presented at a NATO Advanced Research Institute, sponsored by their Eco-Sciences Panel, on "The effects of acid precipitation on vegetation and soils," held at Toronto, Canada from May 22-26, 1978. The organizing expenses and greater part of the expenses of the speakers and chair~en were provided by N.A.T.O. The scientific programme was planned by T. C. Hutchinson together with an international planning committee of G. Abrahamsen (Norway), G. Likens (U.S.A.), F.E. Last (U.K.), C.O. Tamm (Sweden) and B. Ulrich (W. Germany). Many of the dimensions of the 'acid rain' problem are common to countries of northern Europe and North America. The developing awareness over the past ten years of the international nature of the acid rain phenomenon has lead to studies documenting damaging effects on susceptible freshwater bodies. Large areas of the Canadian Pre-Cambrian Shield, with its extension into the United States, and the granitic areas of southern Norwayand Sweden contain lakes which are in the process of acidification. The biological resources of these affected areas are of considerable national concern. However, while clearly damaging effects of acidification on freshwater systems have been well documented, the impact of acid precipitation on terrestrial systems has not been so well understood.
