Book Biological Interactions Of Sulfur Compounds

Download or read book Biological Interactions Of Sulfur Compounds written by Stephen C. Mitchell and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text focuses on the biological interactions of sulphur compounds which arise specifically from the presence of the sulphur atom within the molecule. The book opens with introductory chapters on the chemistry and biology of sulphur, before tackling the field by introducing compounds which share a common chemical combination. In general, following a description of the uses and impact upon the biological field, specific chemical group characteristics are discussed together with the biological activity and structure-activity relationships where known. The toxicity of such compounds, their consequences in biochemical and clinical terms, and their mechanisms of biological interaction are then addressed.

This was supported by ABRAHAM (1939), who identified both FMN and adenosine 5'-phosphate as hydrolysis products of FAD. The discovery of the coenzyme role of FAD has induced WARBURGand coworkers to engage in some speculation concerning the possibility that FMN is itself an artifact, produced through a breakdown of FAD. This aspect will be discussed later, in connection with recent work done on OYE in THEORELL'S laboratory. o NH 2 N CH3 .

Download or read book Organic Chemistry of Sulfur written by S. Oae and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years organic sulfur chemistry has been growing at an even faster pace than the very rapid development in other fields of chemistry. This phenomenal growth is undoubtedly a reflection of industrial and public demands: not only was sulfur recently in overall surplus for the first time in the history of the chemical industry but it has now become a prin cipal environmental hazard in the form of sulfur dioxide, sulfuric acid and hydrogen sulfide. Another reason, discernible in the last fifteen years, has been the desire, on the part of individual chemists and all types of research managers, to move away from the established chemistry of carbon into the less well understood and sometimes virgin chemistries of the other elements which form covalent bonds. As a result of this movement the last decade has seen the development of sulfur chemistry into a well-organized and now much better understood branch of organic chemistry. Enough of the detail has become clear to see mechanistic interrelationships between previously unconnected reactions and with this clarification the whole subject has in tum become systema tized and subdivided. The divalent sulfur chemistry of thiols, monosulfides, disulfides and polysulfides is a large area in itself, much of it devoted to oxidation-reduction and the breakage and formation of sulfur-sulfur bonds, although interesting discoveries are now being made about the reac tivity of certain sulfur-carbon bonds. Of course, this area has its own mas sive biochemical branch involving enzymes and proteins.

Book Fortschritte der Chemie Organischer Naturstoffe Progress in the Chemistry of Organic Natural Products Progr s dans la Chimie des Substances Organiques Naturelles

Download or read book Fortschritte der Chemie Organischer Naturstoffe Progress in the Chemistry of Organic Natural Products Progr s dans la Chimie des Substances Organiques Naturelles written by and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sulfonium compounds have been known to the organic chemist for almost 90 years. During most of this period they remained curiosities, well suited for didactic purposes to illustrate certain similarities to ether adducts and to organic ammonium compounds. Their exploration remained largely in the academic realm, because no unusual practical applications were found in spite of a steady increase in the attention paid to them. An event that occasionally puts a class of compounds into the center of interest is the recognition of its occurrence in nature and of special biological significance. The first natural sulfonium compound was discovered less than 20 years ago, somewhat by chance rather than as the climax of some coveted biochemical problem. Gradually, however, the unique role of sulfonium compounds, especially of S-adenosyl methionine, in enzymatic group transfer reactions such as trans methylation was recognized, and the recent upsurge of interest has been exceptional. The present review is directed toward an interpretation of the properties and functions of biological sulfonium compounds with frequent reference to their structural chemistry. The data presented here may suggest novel or improved analytical techniques and new interpretations of the mechanism of group transfer. Furthermore, a stimulus may be derived for the design of sulfonium compound analogues. The availability of competitive analogues of biochemical key compounds has aided in the understanding of the function of virtually all metabolic intermediates, prosthetic groups of enzymes, vitamins, amino acids, and other compounds. The pattern will be similar in sulfonium biochemistry.

Book Comparative Biochemistry V1

Download or read book Comparative Biochemistry V1 written by Marcel Florkin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative Biochemistry: A Comprehensive Treatise, Volume I: Sources of Free Energy focuses on the desire to provide a sound, critical, and provocative summary of knowledge in comparative biochemistry, including thermodynamics, biological systems, oxidation, visual systems, and aerobic and anaerobic reactions of inorganic substances. The selection first offers information on the introduction to comparative biochemistry and thermodynamics of living systems. Discussions focus on comparative point of views in biology and biochemistry, classical thermodynamics, reaction rates in chemical and biological systems, and thermodynamics of open systems. The text then ponders on comparative mechanisms for fatty acid oxidation; phosphoric acid anhydrides and other energy-rich compounds; and onium compounds and their biological significance. The publication examines phototropism and phototaxis and distribution and evolution of visual systems. Topics include phototropism in plants, analysis of phototropic reaction, nature of photoreceptors, role of auxin in phototropism of plants, visual systems of vertebrates, and habitat relations. The book also tackles aerobic and anaerobic reactions of inorganic substances and comparative biochemistry of glycolysis. The selection is a dependable source of data for readers interested in the sources of free energy.
