Book excerpt: In the theory of partial differential equations, the study of elliptic equations occupies a preeminent position, both because of the importance which it assumes for various questions in mathematical physics, and because of the completeness of the results obtained up to the present time. In spite of this, even in the more classical treatises on analysis the theory of elliptic equations has been considered and illustrated only from particular points of view, while the only expositions of the whole theory, the extremely valuable ones by LICHTENSTEIN and AscoLI, have the charac ter of encyclopedia articles and date back to many years ago. Consequently it seemed to me that it would be of some interest to try to give an up-to-date picture of the present state of research in this area in a monograph which, without attaining the dimensions of a treatise, would nevertheless be sufficiently extensive to allow the expo sition, in some cases in summary form, of the various techniques used in the study of these equations.

His numerous contributions have laid down signi?cant milestones in these ?elds, with a great in?uence on interdis- plinary research communities. He has advanced the careers of numerous young researchers through his generosity and encouragement, some directly through int- lectual guidance and others indirectly by pairing them with well chosen senior c- laborators. A brief review of Professor Galdi’s activities and some impressions by colleagues and friends are included here.

Considering the sustained growth of mathematics itself, as well as the intensive use of an ever-increasing number of its branches in diversified applied contexts, the availability of such surveys in selected areas is believed to fill a real need. The present articles are therefore aimed not so much at research specialists, actively contributing to the subjects discussed, as they are aimed at a broader, mathematically literate audience, looking for contemporary information on the important problems and results in these disciplines, whether it be for use in classroom and seminar, or for the sake of possible application to problems in other fields of science and engineering, or simply for reasons of personal interest. The selection of the areas surveyed, as well as their coverage, was further guided by giving first consideration to developments of whose current state no comprehensive picture could be obtained by going only to the readily accessible literature in familiar languages. It is a unique distinction of the mathematical community to have never been taken in by the myth, now generally shattered, that Russian science merely followed the lead of the West-at a respectful distance. Mathematicians remained aware of the vigorous development during the postwar years of research in their field also in the Communist countries, and they knew of the steady stream of important results which they produced.
