Book Sukumara Natana Thathwa

Download or read book Sukumara Natana Thathwa written by Uma Tapasyananda and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-20 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sukumara Natana Thathwa, began with random thoughts, observations, reactions, being noted down for me alone, and then, very soon, it took on an existence of its own, dragging me along with it, tightly chained, so that I was pulled back to the subject in spite of the numerous deviations, where I was forced to play various roles, that of a wife, a mother, a teacher, even a performer! In every role I played , I felt insufficient, incomplete, except a few moments on stage, that stands out as the sole meaningful events that justify ones existence. It is perhaps these shining moments that has convinced me of the worth of this work. It is also the continuous, eternal search for these same moments, where life is transformed and all conflicts are momentarily resolved, when all seems well and alright in this world, that has led me on, into stage experiments with contents, as well as, stylistics of Mohiniattom, involving in-depth interpretations of characters represented on stage, attempting amalgamations of themes, combining fictions with ancient lore, also trying to bring universal relevance in thematic presentations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian Theatre expands the boundaries of what is usually regarded as theatre in order to explore the multiple dimensions of theatrical performance in India. From rural festivals to contemporary urban theatre, from dramatic rituals and devotional performances to dance-dramas and classical Sanskrit plays, this volume is a vivid introduction to the colourful and often surprising world of Indian performance. Besides mapping the vast range of performance traditions, the volume provides in-depth treatment of representative genres, including well-known forms such as Kathakali and ram lila and little-knowa performances such as tamasha. Each of these chapters explains the historical background of the theatre form under consideration and interprets its dramatic literature, probes its ritual or religious significance, and, where relevant, explores its social and political implications. Moreover, each chapter, except for those on the origins of Indian theatre, concludes with performance notes describing the actual experience of seeing a live performance in its original context. Based on extensive fieldwork, Indian Theatre is the first comprehensive account of the subject to be written by Western specialists and addressed to the needs of readers in the West. It will be a valuable resource for all students of Indian culture and a standard work in the history of theatre and performance for years to come.

This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bhagawan says that treading the spiritual path is like walking on a razor's edge. One has to be ever vigilant, train the mind to dwell on the Lord constantly. To quote Bhagawan, "Control the senses, which run helter-skelter; then, the origins of the disease will be destroyed. Let the mind keep a watch over its gymnastics; dam up the mad flood of thoughts and plans and schemes; then, there will be no room for worries and anxieties in the mind. To diminish the wanderings of your thoughts, repeat the name of the Lord; that will keep out your sorrows and troubles. Without the effacement of the mind, spiritual wisdom cannot dawn. The full person is one, who has succeeded in this." One should practise meditation assiduously, since it is the basis of all spiritual practice (Sadhana). Bhagawan says that one should fasten the mind on the Lord and keep off all other thoughts from the mental plane. That is the full fruition of meditation. For aspirants, who want to lead a God-centric life, careful reading of this Vahini will help them to reach the goal of life.

Book A Dictionary of Ila Usage 1860 1960

Download or read book A Dictionary of Ila Usage 1860 1960 written by Dennis G. Fowler and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2000 with total page 912 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on material collected by missionaries at Kasenga Mission in Zambia. Edwin Smith began in 1901 to note each new Ila word, together with illustrative sentences dictated by his Ila informants. Later missionaries continued this practice, so that in 1959 the author found a mass of over 12,000 items already collected. As the largest body of Ila ever assembled, the dictionary offers much of interest in several fields. The language has a consistent agglutinative structure of great sophistication, logical as Latin, flexible as Greek. The speakers reveal not merely the preoccupations of daily existence in Ila villages a century ago, but an outlook both sensitive and wryly humourous. Feared in battle, fearful of spirits, revering God; hunters of lion and buffalo, polygamous, romantic, ribald in men's company, but highly proper in women's, tender towards children, with a high regard for the arts of hospitality, conversation, and love, the Baila spring with verve from these pages. Appendices list nearly 2,000 synonyms, 276 proverbs, l64 metaphors, 216 customs, 400 trees with their medicinal uses, 290 plants, 150 birds, and grammatical tables.

Book Approaches to Acting

Download or read book Approaches to Acting written by Daniel Meyer-Dinkgräfe and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2005-03-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries the theatre has been one of the major forms of art. How did acting, and its institutionalization in the theatre, begin in the first place? In some cultures complex stories relate the origin of acting and the theatre. And over time, approaches to acting have changed considerably. In the West, until the end of the 19th century, those changes occurred within the realm of acting itself, focusing on the question of whether acting should be 'natural' or 'formal.' Approaches to acting were closely related to the trends in culture at large. Acting became more and more professional and sophisticated as philosophical theories developed and knowledge in the human sciences increased. In the 20th century, the director was established as the most important force in the theater--able to lead actors to pinnacles of their art which they could not have achieved on their own. Approaches to acting in non-Western cultures follow quite different patterns. This book provides a clear overview of different approaches to acting, both historical and contemporary, Western and non-Western, and concludes with a challenge to the future of the art.
