Excerpt: This is a list of characters in the PlayStation 2 computer role-playing game Suikoden V. The Prince of Falena is the main character of the game; Lyon, Georg, and Sialeeds are also major characters, featured prominently on the front cover. This list is organized by Falena's political factions. The main factions are the Royalist faction, the Godwin faction, and the Barows faction. 108 Stars of Destiny (Suikoden) also has a list of these characters, laid out by their order in the Stars of Destiny instead, and Notable Suikoden characters has a list of relevant non-Star characters. The royal family in Falena is not as strong as it would prefer, with large portions of the army more loyal to their local nobles than to the Crown and a powerful Senate to check the Queen. Still, the royal family maintains direct control over the capital Sol-Falena and armies based there. Once, the town of Lordlake also counted itself as very loyal to the Queen, though Lordlake became embittered after Arshtat's harsh punishment of them in the revolt two years prior to the start of Suikoden V. In official publications and the novelization of Suikoden V, the royal family's last name is given as "Falenas," though this is not seen in the North American localization of the game. Arshtat Arushut to Farenasu) is the Queen of Falena and bearer of the Sun Rune, one of the 27 True Runes. Ferid is her husband, the Prince is her son, and Lymsleia is her daughter and heir. Book Super Power Spoony Bards and Silverware

Download or read book Super Power Spoony Bards and Silverware written by Dominic Arsenault and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2017-09-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical look at how the Super Nintendo Entertainment System—and a resistance to innovation—took Nintendo from industry leadership to the margins of videogaming. This is a book about the Super Nintendo Entertainment System that is not celebratory or self-congratulatory. Most other accounts declare the Super NES the undisputed victor of the “16-bit console wars” of 1989–1995. In this book, Dominic Arsenault reminds us that although the SNES was a strong platform filled with high-quality games, it was also the product of a short-sighted corporate vision focused on maintaining Nintendo’s market share and business model. This led the firm to fall from a dominant position during its golden age (dubbed by Arsenault the “ReNESsance”) with the NES to the margins of the industry with the Nintendo 64 and GameCube consoles. Arsenault argues that Nintendo’s conservative business strategies and resistance to innovation during the SNES years explain its market defeat by Sony’s PlayStation. Extending the notion of “platform” to include the marketing forces that shape and constrain creative work, Arsenault draws not only on game studies and histories but on game magazines, boxes, manuals, and advertisements to identify the technological discourses and business models that formed Nintendo’s Super Power. He also describes the cultural changes in video games during the 1990s that slowly eroded the love of gamer enthusiasts for the SNES as the Nintendo generation matured. Finally, he chronicles the many technological changes that occurred through the SNES's lifetime, including full-motion video, CD-ROM storage, and the shift to 3D graphics. Because of the SNES platform’s architecture, Arsenault explains, Nintendo resisted these changes and continued to focus on traditional gameplay genres.

Book excerpt: Recognized as one of the most interesting and vibrant artists from the Edo period, Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861) is a major exponent of ukiyo-e in the early 1800s and trained under the master Utagawa Toyokuni. His fame is tied to the series of polychrome xylographs that illustrate the 108 heroes from the novel Suikoden (Brigands) , which became a bestseller in China and Japan in the late 1700s, promoting the imagery of a band of brigands who defend the people suppressed by injustice and government corruption. Violent, powerful, armed people with muscular bodies covered in tattoos that today inspire manga , anime , tattoo artists and illustrators across the world. Kuniyoshi affirmed the genre of warrior prints, but he was also interested in portraits of female beauties, kabuki actors, landscapes, children and ghosts, another greatly admired genre in Japan. Nonetheless, his name is above all associated with illusion, with shadows and Arcimboldo-like composite figures, figures within figures and parodies of stories and battles with animals, objects, sweets, food. His images are fantastical, baroque, rich in colour, of great detail, with imposing characters and dynamic actions. A versatile and intriguing figure for the variety of subjects, from female beauties and monsters to animals and heroes, and for the impressive technique that gave life to a school carried forth for generations.

Book The Yakuza in Popular Media

Download or read book The Yakuza in Popular Media written by Frank Jacob and published by Büchner-Verlag. This book was released on 2021-10-15 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The yakuza, Japan's traditional gangsters, are famous, especially outside Japan, where the country's criminal underworld ranks next to sushi or Godzilla when it comes to their respective fame and popularity. However, in popular media the images of the Japanese gangster vary, ranging from chivalrous Robin Hood-like characters, to violent mobsters without honor and dignity. The present volume addresses these differences, i.e. the way yakuza are presented in Japanese and Western popular media. Films and autobiographical novels, inspired by historical events or personal experiences, but also by existent and sometimes even expected stereotypes, therefore often already represent a specific image of the Japanese mafia that is more like an artificial construct than actual reality. The contributions in this book consequently intend to discuss the images of the Japanese yakuza in popular media to offer a first insight into a very important yet so far understudied topic related to the history of and existent narratives within Japan's popular culture.

The first section of the book analyzes the form and function of the Japanese period film, describing the unique iconography and characteristics of films set in the past. The author also examines how the period film has allowed Japanese filmmakers to circumvent government censorship by serving as a rhetorical device with which they can explore contemporary concerns through a criticism of the past. The final section of the book contains chapters that focus on the narrative in Japanese epic, religion, theater, and modern popular literature. A complete filmography and bibliography are included.
