Book The Correspondence of Charles Darwin Volume 2 1837 1843

Download or read book The Correspondence of Charles Darwin Volume 2 1837 1843 written by Charles Darwin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1985 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume of the complete edition of The Correspondence of Charles Darwin. For the first time full authoritative texts of Darwin's letters are available, edited according to modern textual editorial principles and practice. The letters in this volume were written during the seven years following Darwin's return to England from the Beagle voyage. It was a period of extraordinary activity and productivity in which he became recognised as a naturalist of outstanding ability, as an author and editor, and as a professional man with official responsibilities in several scientific organisations. During these years he published two books and fifteen papers and also organised and superintended the publication of the Zoology of the Voyage of HMS Beagle, for which he described the locations of the fossils and the habitats and behaviour of the living species he had collected. Busy as he was with scientific activities, Darwin found time to re-establish family ties and friendships, and to make new friends among the naturalists with whom his work brought him into close contact. In November 1838, two years after his return Darwin became engaged to his cousin, Emma Wedgwood, whom he subsequently married.

Book excerpt: The Days of Creation examines the history of Christian interpretation of the seven-day framework of Genesis 1:1–2:3 in the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament from the post-apostolic era to the debates surrounding Essays and Reviews (1860). Included in the survey are patristic, medieval, Renaissance/Reformation, eighteenth-century Enlightenment and finally early to mid-nineteenth-century interpretations of the days of creation. This study enables an insight into the mighty career of a biblical text of seminal importance, and fills a significant niche in reception-historical research.

Book The Book of Nature in Early Modern and Modern History

Download or read book The Book of Nature in Early Modern and Modern History written by Klaas van Berkel and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 22-25 May, 2002, the University of Groningen hosted an international conference on 'The Book of Nature. Continuity and change in European and American attitudes towards the natural world'. From Antiquity down to our own time, theologians, philosophers and scientists have often compared nature to a book, which might, under the right circumstances, be read and interpreted in order to come closer to the 'Author' of nature, God. The 'reading' of this book was not regarded as mere idle curiosity, but it was seen as leading to a deeper understanding of God's wisdom and power, and it culturally legitimated and promoted a positive attitude towards nature and its study. A selection of the papers which were delivered at the conference has been edited in two volumes. The first book was published as The Book of Nature in Antiquity and the Middle Ages; this second volume is devoted to the history of that concept after the Middle Ages.

Download or read book New Haven s Sentinels written by Jelle Zeilinga de Boer and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-21 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: West Rock and East Rock are bold and beautiful features around New Haven, Connecticut. They resemble monumental gateways (or time-tried sentinels) and represent a moment in geologic time when the North American and African continents began to separate and volcanism affected much of Connecticut. The rocks attracted the attention of poets, painters, and naturalists when beliefs rose about the spiritual dimensions of nature in the early 19th century. More than two dozen artists, including Frederick Church, George Durrie, and John Weir, captured their magic and produced an assortment of classic American landscapes. In the same period, the science of geology evolved rapidly, triggered by the controversy between proponents and opponents of biblical explanations for the origin of rocks. Lavishly illustrated, featuring over sixty paintings and prints, this book is a perfect introduction to understanding the relationship of geology and art. It will delight those who appreciate landscape painting, and anyone who has seen the grandeur of East and West Rock.

Book Benjamin Silliman and His Circle

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benjamin Silliman played a unique role in American science before the Civil War. In his various roles as a professor at Yale, as editor of the American Journal of Science, and as a public lecturer in every major city, he taught science to the whole nation. He established science as a regular part of college education and helped to found graduate education to train professional scientists for the new nation. Primarily a teacher, Silliman exerted his influence through a remarkable circle of students, colleagues, and friends. This book examines their aims and ideals, and details the historical process by which Silliman and his associates worked to create a scientific community in the United States.
