Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rethinking the means through which we can achieve economic well-being for all. In this timely book, Christine Firer Hinze looks back at the influential teachings of priest-economist Monsignor John A. Ryan (1869-1945), who supported worker justice and defended a living wage for all Americans in the first half of the twentieth century. Advancing Ryan’s efforts to articulate a persuasive plan for social reform, Hinze advocates for an action-oriented livelihood agenda that situates US working families’ economic pursuits within a comprehensive commitment to sustainable “radical sufficiency” for all. Documenting the daily lives and economic struggles of past and present US Catholic working-class families, Hinze explores the larger impulses and patterns—economic, cultural, political, moral, and spiritual—that affect the work these people perform in homes, in communities, and at paid jobs. Their story entwines with the larger history of the American dream and working people's pursuit of a dignified livelihood. Surveying this history with an eye to the dynamics of power and difference, Hinze rethinks Ryan’s ethics and Catholic social teaching to develop a new conception of a decent livelihood and its implications for contemporary policy and practice. The result is a critical Catholic economic ethic capable of addressing the situations of workers and families in the interdependent global economy of the twenty-first century. Radical Sufficiency offers transformative strategies and strategic policy directions for achieving the radical Christian goal of dignified work and a good livelihood for all.

Download or read book Wyndham Lewis the Radical written by Carmelo Cunchillos Jaime and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume about the modernist writer and artist Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957) presents him as a radical figure in twentieth-century modernism. The authors rediscover aspects of Lewis's work which show how his fiction challenges modernist norms, and how his acute and wide-ranging critique of culture has a vital contemporary relevance. Lewis's range is extraordinary - it covers Nietzsche as well as classic cinema, Renaissance art and English classicism. Being politically conservative, he had nonetheless a place on the political left, and he can be seen as a postmodernist before his time. These essays by leading Spanish and British specialists reveal Lewis as one of the key modernists of our time.

Book Nanocomposite Structures and Dispersions

Download or read book Nanocomposite Structures and Dispersions written by Ignac Capek and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2019-07-20 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanocomposite Structures and Dispersions deals with the preparation of gelled, branched and crosslinked nanostructured polymers in the solution free radical polymerization and controlled/living radical polymerization and polymer and composite nanoparticles and nanostructures in disperse systems, the kinetics of direct and inverse disperse polymerizations (microemulsion, miniemulsion, emulsion, dispersion and suspension polymerization), the bottom-up approach building of functionalized nanoparticles, modelling of radical microemulsion polymerization, the characterization of traditional and non-traditional polymer dispersions, the collective properties of nanomaterials and their (bio)applications. This book is designed to bridge that gap and offers several unique features. First, it is written as an introduction to and survey of nanomaterials with a careful balance between basics and advanced topics. Thus, it is suitable for both beginners and experts, including graduate and upper-level undergraduate students. Second, it strives to balance the colloidal aspects of nanomaterials with physical principles. Third, the book highlights nanomaterial based architectures including composite or hybrid conjugates rather than only isolated nanoparticles. A number of ligands have been utilized to biodecorate the polymer and composite nanocarriers. Finally, the book provides an in depth discussion of important examples of reaction mechanisms of bottom-up building of functionalized nanoparticles, or potential applications of nanoarchitectures, ranging from physical to chemical and biological systems. - Free radical (controlled) polymerization, branching, crosslinking and gelling - Kinetics and mechanism of polymer nanoparticles formation - Modelling of radical polymerization in disperse systems - Polymer, composite and metal nanoparticles, nanostructures and nanomaterials - Smart nanostructures, biodecorated particles, nanocarriers and therapeutics
