Book excerpt: Darfur's Sorrow is the first general history of Darfur to be published in any language. The book surveys events from before the founding of the Fur sultanate in the sixteenth century through the rise and establishment of the Fur state and its incorporation into the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan in 1916. The narrative continues with detailed coverage of the brief but all-important colonial period (1916–1956) and Darfur's history as a neglected peripheral region since independence. The political, economic, environmental, and social factors that gave rise to the current humanitarian crisis are discussed in detail, as are the course of Darfur's rebellion, its brutal suppression by the Sudanese government, and the lawless brigands known as janjawid. The second edition of the book brings the story up to date and includes an analysis of attempts to save Darfur's embattled people and to bring an end to the fighting.

Book Islamic Law and Society in the Sudan

Download or read book Islamic Law and Society in the Sudan written by Carolyn Fluehr-Lobban and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-15 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few studies exist which deal with Islamic law in practice, and this is among the first such studies in the English language for Islamic Africa. It is significant that the present study was completed just prior to the extension of Islamic law as the sole governing law in the Sudan in 1983, for it captures many essentials of the Shari’a as it has been applied for decades prior to this important change. Numerous movements for reform and change are discussed in the book, which reflect the contemporary debate in the Sudan over the position of Shari’a in society.

Book Sudan

  • Author : Tony Barnett
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2016-10-04
  • ISBN : 1315451247
  • Pages : 224 pages

Download or read book Sudan written by Tony Barnett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the mid-1980s, Sudan’s economy, society and political framework were on the point of disintegration. Civil war was exacerbating the effects of an already major famine. An unpopular government was resorting to ever more extreme measures in order to remain in power. The imposition of a particularly oppressive and hash interpretation of sharia law was heightening racial and religious tensions. Internationally, Sudan was faced by a debt crisis which was apparently insoluble, and which threatened to undermine completely what was left of the economy. This book, first published in 1988, examines the complex economic and social processes which led to this situation – emphasising the part played by the state itself. The book combines detailed multi-disciplinary analyses of Sudan in the post-colonial era with a consideration of possibilities for the future.

Book The Sudan

    Book Details:
  • Author : John Obert Voll
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2016-10-04
  • ISBN : 1315451360
  • Pages : 194 pages

Download or read book The Sudan written by John Obert Voll and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Little known in the United States and Western Europe, the Sudan is nevertheless a country of major importance in international affairs. This analytic introduction to the modern Sudan, first published in 1985, provides a summary of the basic dynamics of the country’s political, social, cultural, and economic life, as well as a general framework for interpreting the modern Sudanese experience. The authors present a clear picture of the Sudan as a distinctive entity with an identity all its own, revealing, however, that almost paradoxically one of the most significant aspects of that identity is the place of the Sudan as a special link between different cultural patterns and socio-political styles. The Sudan is both a bridge and a melting pot, and this provides the foundation of its unique character.

Book The Pursuit of Certainty

Download or read book The Pursuit of Certainty written by Wendy James and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-12-16 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the world population faces movement, mixing and displacement on a larger scale than ever before, the result has not been a collapse of boundaries but an increase in the rise of new forms of ethnic, cultural and religious identity. Those based in the highly developed countries can extend global influence through wealth and sophisticated technology. The Pursuit of Certainty presents original case studies which explore the effect anthropology's inherited tradition of tolerance and cross-cultural understanding has on the new pursuits of truth. Several chapters focus on the rise of new certainties while others examine notions of diversity providing a critical perspective on the new religious movements and current popular orthodoxies relating to society and culture.

Book Hasan al Turabi

    Book Details:
  • Author : W. J. Berridge
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2017-08-17
  • ISBN : 1316851869
  • Pages : 367 pages

Download or read book Hasan al Turabi written by W. J. Berridge and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-17 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hasan al-Turabi (1932–2016) was seen as one of the most influential figures in modern Sudanese history and politics. This book, based on extensive research and a thorough analysis of al-Turabi's own writings, provides a comprehensive study of the upbringing, ideas and political career of the Islamist intellectual and political leader. Balancing hostile and favourable accounts of al-Turabi, it challenges assumptions of the 'Marxist' or 'Fascist' dynamics underpinning Islamism, arguing that its colonial and post-colonial origins define the nature of Islamism's message. By encouraging readers to move away from generic models and limited readings of Islamism, Willow Berridge opens new and vital research for the understanding of Islamic politics across the Middle East and Africa. It makes for an ideal read for both undergraduate and postgraduate students focusing on the modern Sudanese state, and those challenging core debates on democracy, the Islamic State and Jihad.
