Book Historical Dictionary of the Sudan

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Sudan written by Robert S. Kramer and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-03-22 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Republic of the Sudan was long the largest country in Africa and, according to the general consensus, also one of the least successful in many ways. This was not entirely its fault since it lay along the fault line between Muslim and Christian Africa and between the Nile Valley civilizations and African Sudanic cultures. This partly explains the long and bloody warfare waged by the Southerners to achieve independence, which they did in July 2011. So this hefty book actually covers not one but two states. This fourth edition of the Historical Dictionary of the Sudan does so, first, through a lengthy and detailed chronology tracing its relatively few successes and numerous failures. The introductory essay does an admirable job of putting it all in perspective. But the most informative part is the dictionary, with now over 700 entries for this fourth edition. They deal with important personalities, politics, the economy, society, culture, religion and inevitably the civil war. There are also appendixes and an extensive bibliography.

Book The Rise of Rail Power in War and Conquest 1833 1914

Download or read book The Rise of Rail Power in War and Conquest 1833 1914 written by Edwin A. Pratt and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-05-18 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Rise of Rail-power in War and Conquest, 1833-1914" by Edwin A. Pratt is a book about transportation and the military. The time has not yet come for telling all that the railways have thus far done during the war which has still to be fought out. That story, in the words of a railwayman concerned therein, is at present "a sealed book." Meanwhile, however, it is desirable that the position as defined in the second of the two considerations given should be fully realized, in order that what the railways and, so far as they have been aided by them, the combatants, have accomplished or are likely to accomplish may be better understood when the sealed book becomes an open one.

Book The Impoverishment of the African Red Sea Littoral 1640 1945

Download or read book The Impoverishment of the African Red Sea Littoral 1640 1945 written by Steven Serels and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-23 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The African Red Sea Littoral, currently divided between Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Djibouti, is one of the poorest regions in the world. But the pastoralist communities indigenous to this region were not always poor—historically, they had access to a variety of resources that allowed them to prosper in the harsh, arid environment. This access was mediated by a robust moral economy of pastoralism that acted as a social safety net. Steven Serels charts the erosion of this moral economy, a slow-moving process that began during the Little Ice Age mega-drought of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and continued through the devastating famines of the twentieth century. By examining mass sedentarization after the Second World War as merely the latest manifestation of an inter-generational environmental and economic crisis, this book offers an innovative lens for understanding poverty in northeastern Africa.

Book An Economic History of the Middle East and North Africa

Download or read book An Economic History of the Middle East and North Africa written by Charles Issawi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-16 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic history of the Middle East and North Africa is quite extraordinary. This is an axiomatic statement, but the very nature of the economic changes that have stemmed directly from the effects of oil resources in these areas has tended to obscure longterm patterns of economic change and the fundamental transformation of Middle Eastern and North African economies and societies over the past two hundred years. In this study Professor Issawi examines and explains the development of these economies since 1800, focusing particularly on the challenge posed by the use and subsequent decline of Western economic and political domination and the Middle Eastern response to it. The book beg ins with an analysis of the effects of foreign intervention in the area: the expansion of trade, the development of transport networks, the influx of foreign capital and resulting integration into international commercial and financial networks. It goes on to examine the local response to these external forces: migration within, to and from the region, population growth, urbanization and changes in living standards, shifts in agricultural production and land tenure and the development of an industrial sector. Professor Issawi discusses the crucial effects of the growth of oil and oil-related industries in a separate chapter, and finally assesses the likely gains and losses in this long period for both the countries in the area and the Western powers. He has drawn on long experience and an immense amount of material in surveying the period, and provides a clear and penetrating survey of an extraordinarily complex area.
