Book excerpt: "Spencer," he says, his voice sounding just as stunned as I am, "you saved me." Spencer never dreamed that she and Cayden would be connected in any way other than occasional friendship. But when she saves him from a stab wound his father gave him with only her tears, she finds out exactly why he pushed her away; Cayden is not human. Or at least, not entirely... Cayden is a Shade. He feeds off of the negative emotions of humans. And Spencer is his Familiar. When Unwanted enemies arise who will do anything in their power to break them apart, just as emotions between the two are becoming more than just sustenance, something becomes very clear. Fate has never seemed so evil.

Even his passion for his secret organization, the Young Corinthians, has waned—until he is assigned a mission with the potential to finally bring about the peace that has eluded him for nearly two decades. But to eliminate a brilliant, dangerous nemesis, Langdon needs the help of a woman whose loyalties are most uncertain. Grace Crowther ignores the rumors that persist after the death of her husband, a merciless doctor who won her in a card game. Is she truly the black widow that many believe? He needs Grace, if he’s to have any chance of tracking down the leader of the nefarious gang known as the Kingsmen. Book The Genesis of Good and Evil

Download or read book The Genesis of Good and Evil written by Mark S. Smith and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, the Garden of Eden story has been a cornerstone for the Christian doctrine of the Fall and original sin. In recent years, many scholars have disputed this understanding of Genesis 3 because it has no words for sin, transgression, disobedience, or punishment. Instead, it is about how the human condition came about. Yet the picture is not so simple. The Genesis of Good and Evil examines how the idea of the Fall developed in Jewish tradition on the eve of Christianity. In the end, the Garden of Eden is a rich study of humans in relation to God that leaves open many questions. One such question is, Does Genesis 3, 4, and 6, taken together, support the Christian doctrine of original sin? Smiths well-informed, close reading of these chapters concludes that it does. In this book, he addresses the many mysterious matters of the Garden story and invites readers to explore questions of their own.

Book Wicked Cinema

    Book Details:
  • Author : Daniel S. Cutrara
  • Publisher : University of Texas Press
  • Release : 2015-05-01
  • ISBN : 1477307532
  • Pages : 281 pages

Download or read book Wicked Cinema written by Daniel S. Cutrara and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From struggles over identity politics in the 1990s to current concerns about a clash of civilizations between Islam and Christianity, culture wars play a prominent role in the twenty-first century. Movies help to define and drive these conflicts by both reflecting and shaping cultural norms, as well as showing what violates those norms. In this pathfinding book, Daniel S. Cutrara employs queer theory, cultural studies, theological studies, and film studies to investigate how cinema represents and often denigrates religion and religious believers—an issue that has received little attention in film studies, despite the fact that faith in its varied manifestations is at the heart of so many cultural conflicts today. Wicked Cinema examines films from the United States, Europe, and the Middle East, including Crimes and Misdemeanors, The Circle, Breaking the Waves, Closed Doors, Agnes of God, Priest, The Last Temptation of Christ, and Dogma. Central to all of the films is their protagonists' struggles with sexual transgression and traditional belief systems within Christianity, Judaism, or Islam—a struggle, Cutrara argues, that positions believers as the Other and magnifies the abuses of religion while ignoring its positive aspects. Uncovering a hazardous web of ideological assumptions informed by patriarchy, the spirit/flesh dichotomy, and heteronormativity, Cutrara demonstrates that ultimately these films emphasize the "Otherness" of the faithful through a variety of strategies commonly used to denigrate the queer, from erasing their existence, to using feminization to make them appear weak, to presenting them as dangerous fanatics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous reprehensible corporate, governmental, and nonprofit activities over recent years have highlighted the existence of organizational evil. Unlike other works on the topic, this book fully develops the concept of organizational evil, conceptually weaving the interchange between evil individuals (microlevel) who ultimately create the organizational environment that is evil, and the macrolevel elements of policy, culture, and manipulations of the social environment.
