The author was teaching in an urban environment when she noticed that consistent use of what she believed to be effective strategies did not consistently result in positive outcomes in every classroom setting. This capstone details how the author determined how other teachers used management strategies in urban elementary classrooms by interviewing three urban teachers and using a qualitative case study research design. She describes how effectively teaching urban students is not simply a matter of applying tried and true methods, but one of applying student-centered management and culturally-responsive teaching strategies such as relationship-building, communicating effectively, choice of curricula, and use of physical classroom space. Three themes emerge from this review, analysis, and synthesis of the research: creating structured and predictable routines, building relationships with students, and being culturally responsive to students.
