This research study sought to understand how women view themselves as educational leaders, what decision making models they employed, and how they have successfully thrived in a position rife with difficult decisions and political landmines. The central research questions of this study were: What leadership style(s) do female superintendents believe is most effective in achieving their vision for the school district they serve? What communication style(s) characterize(s) female superintendent's (s') interactions with various stakeholders? What ethical framework(s) inform(s) female superintendent's (s') decision making? How do female superintendents view themselves in the role of leader? This study utilized a qualitative methodology. Participants included eight randomly identified superintendents from the collar counties of Metropolitan Chicago. Four of these participants were recently retired. Four were currently practicing superintendents.

Book excerpt: The superintendency offers the most powerful and prestigious positions in K–12 public school systems. Few superintendents of these systems in the United States are women, although the majority of teachers are women and many women have leadership positions in schools. There are also increasing numbers of women in administrative preparation programs at institutions of higher education. This study of 27 highly qualified women in top-level administrative positions in public education was designed to find out what it is like to be a woman aspiring to the executive leadership position. Research questions included: Why are there so few women superintendents when so many are qualified? What are the routes to the superintendency? What is the context of educational administration in the public school? What kinds of leaders are women who aspire to the superintendency? The research was also informed by a femininst advocacy of social change to discover how and under what conditions a more equitable distribution of superintendencies is likely to occur. A feminist poststructural framework provided the theoretical basis for the analysis of the data.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the history of women in the superintendency and the best practices that they have used to weather challenging conflicts to remain in the position. The research question that guided this study was: To what do successful female superintendents in Arkansas attribute their success? This qualitative research ascertained the factors needed for female superintendents in Arkansas to have long-lasting careers in that role, if they desire. Creswell (2012) recommends that for qualitative research data analysis, the researcher should arrange and structure the data, code the data, and represent the data. The data collected for this study consisted of interviews that focused on five female superintendents in Arkansas who are employed and working in P-12 public school systems, and have been in the position for five years or more. Standardized open-ended interview questions were conducted with all participants. An analysis of the interviews revealed that having a strong support system and finding a balance between work and home were key components for their success and longevity in the position of superintendent. The findings in this study lead to further questioning on the successful impact that the female superintendents have in their public school systems, which could add to their longevity.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The most male-dominated executive position of any profession in the United States. The typical superintendent is a married, white male, between 51-55 years old. Women spend an average of 10.2 years in the classroom before seeking an administrative position; men spend an average of 5 years. The slowest of all K-12 administrative positions to integrate women and people of color. With the majority of educators being women, they are a logical source of candidates that has only marginally been activated. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to reveal the narrative of women superintendents as well as to describe their perceptions of success ascending to the superintendency. If women are to seek the superintendency they will need to view the position as one that will offer them success. But what is success for women in the superintendency? How do women in this position experience it? This study probes the lived experiences of women superintendents, including significant moments in their childhood, in search of better understanding their perceptions and experiences with success. A narrative approach was used in this study to capture the essence of participants' lives along with documents and artifacts. Feminist Theory was used as the theoretical lens from which to frame the research. The data was recorded, transcribed, and analyzed. The findings surrounding female superintendents perceptions of themselves revealed four themes: identity, education, roles, and support. The findings surrounding women superintendents experiences with success is focused on relationship building and effective communication. The main conclusions drawn included aspiring superintendents need to obtain higher education degrees for advancement, site level administration and district office experience, and personal and professional support systems.

Book excerpt: Female superintendents, while not as rare as they once were, still remain underrepresented when one considers the number of women in the teaching, building leadership, and district leadership ranks. Bolman and Deal’s (2006) framework for leaders provided the context for the attributes attributed to leadership for the purpose of this study. Attributes are delineated as “care-giver, analyst, wizard, and warrior.” Participants shared their leadership positions, both formal and informal, as well as the mentors and coaches that have influenced them along the way. Additionally, the participants discussed the primary means of their own professional development that informs their work in district. Further, the superintendents interviewed discussed their leadership style and the perception of others in their respective districts. Questions that focused on the participants’ definition of success and the barriers to success added to the definition of themselves as leaders, as well as the experiences and perceptions of the leaders themselves. Huffington (2015) provides four lenses of leadership specific to women. These lenses are well-being, wisdom, wonder, and giving. More than using the language of caregiver, analyst, wizard, or warrior, the participants of this study spoke to the balance of working with people in a time of change and angst in education. They spoke to the well-being of their students and staff and caring about the future. Decisions were made to balance the competing needs of the stakeholders. Finally, the participants of this study spoke to the strength of their districts and their communities and the interdependence needed for everyone to thrive during this time of change in education.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Although women actively seek advancement and constitute the majority of teachers in American public schools, they do not occupy many of the decisionmaking, administrative, or superintendency positions in education. This paper presents a perspective on the problem of women's lack of progression from entrylevel positions of leadership through superintendency. A qualitative, phenomenological methodology is used to illuminate the lived experiences of 16 women who were active in the position of American public school superintendent during the 2008-2009 academic year. The superintendents were of varied age, race, and family/marital status. The researcher describes the voice of women superintendents and their personal experiences through semi-structured, in-depth interviews. The purpose of this study was to understand the lived experiences of female superintendents who gave descriptions of their work lives, including their resilience and the obstacles they faced, in order to determine how female superintendents in Alabama, Florida, and Georgia were successful in obtaining their positions. This was accomplished through a series of interviews in three southeastern states with female superintendents who were either African American or Caucasian. Barriers to leadership opportunities for women and resilience factors were examined to help describe some of the reasons women continue to be underrepresented in the role of superintendent nationally and in these three southeastern states. Although gender discrimination affected most of the superintendents at some point, findings indicate that the most frequently stated barrier was conflicting career and family demands, and the most frequently stated strategy for success was networking. The interviews yielded insight into the actual experiences and commonalities of the females in superintendent positions. All female superintendents interviewed reported high job satisfaction, and all except one agreed they would make the decision to seek leadership and superintendency again. Each of the superintendents expressed having strong support systems; all 16 had mentors who encouraged them along the way, and they stated those relationships were vital for success at each stage of their career. Most stated that collaboration was the most effective style of leadership unless the situation required an authoritarian approach. Other important leadership characteristics included communication, vision, problemsolving, critical thinking and risk taking.

After all, women accounted for nearly eighty percent of all teachers by 1910 and their ascendance into formal school leadership positions could not be far behind. After World War II, however, a backlash against single women educators and a rigid realignment of gender roles in schools contributed to a rapid decline of women school administrators across the country, a decline from which there has been little recovery to the present. Destined to Rule the Schools tells the story of women and school leadership in America from the common school era to the present. In a broad sense, it offers an historical account of how teaching became women's work and the school superintendency men's. Blount explores how power in school employment has been structured unequally by gender. It focuses on the superintendency because an important component of the effort to establish control of schools has occurred in contesting the definition of this position. Unique and important contributions of this volume include: the only published comprehensive statistical study describing the number of women superintendents throughout the twentieth century, an analysis suggesting that the superintendency may have become an appointive position in part to remove it from the influence of newly enfranchised women voters, a discussion of the role of homophobia in creating and perpetuating rigid gender divisions in school employment, and a broad analysis that integrates the histories of teaching and school administration.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to describe the experiences of African American women in their ascent to the position of superintendent in school districts in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The theories guiding this study were Delgado’s critical race theory and Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory as they address the plights faced by African American women, specifically racism, sexism, classism, loneliness, microaggressions, marginality syndrome, and the status of outsider. The central question guiding this study was: How do African American female superintendents describe their success and perseverance achieving the school superintendent position? The subquestions for this study were designed to explore in deeper detail how African American female superintendents describe their path to success in achieving superintendence and how they describe the experiences and strategies that contributed to their perseverance in superintendence. Data collection included individual interviews with 11 past and present superintendents of school districts in the Commonwealth of Virginia, a focus group interview with five participants, and participants’ documents and personal artifacts. Data analysis involved organizing and coding the data to reflect the research subquestion areas of success and perseverance, to produce two major themes: desire to succeed and determination to continue. Findings included study participants’ descriptions of their experiences as challenging with gender and race presenting obstacles to their leadership progression, but they viewed their impact on others as a significant motivator to persist. Additionally, all agreed success is achievable when there are supportive professional and personal networks in place to undergird their efforts to lead.
