The limited nature of the receiver array also caused artifacts resembling migration smiles in the image. These artifacts are partially suppressed by limiting the aperture of the migration, but this also removes dipping reflectors from the image. To maximize the imaging capabilities of the data, a second approach complimenting the GRT method is developed. This approach, termed vector image isochron (VII) migration, removes array artifacts from the image without losing energy from dipping reflectors. This allows artifacts in the conventional image to be identified, aiding interpretation of the GRT images. VII images also show more even illumination than conventional images, although an effect similar to NMO stretching reduces the resolution of the VII image as compared to the GRT image. The VII scheme is an extension of the GRT migration process of Miller et al. (1987), but involves forming an image which depends on the imaged plane orientation, transforming the image based on the array geometry, then finishing the GRT summation over plane orientations. The VII imaging method is derived in both 2D and 3D with the assumption that the ray paths are straight and that at least one of the arrays, source or receiver, is horizontally oriented. The surface array can have any distribution, regular or random. The other array can have any orientation in general, although this thesis assumes that it will be either another surface array or a vertically oriented borehole array. ...

Book excerpt: The present book is the author's third on the subject of vertical seismic profiling (VSP). Ten years have elapsed since the pUblication of the fIrst book. During this period, VSP has become the principal method of seismic observations in boreholes and the chief method of experimental studies of seismic waves in the real earth. VSP combines borehole studies in the seismic frequency band, well velocity surveys, proximity or aplanatic surveys, all of which previously existed as separate methods. The high effectiveness ofVSP, its great practical value, the express nature and clarity of the results obtained have all contributed towards a very rapid acceptance of the method. In the USSR VSP has been used in an overwhelming majority of areas and is being used increasingly in many foreign countries as well. This has been greatly facilitated by the translation into English and the publication in the U. S. A. by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists of the book Vertical Seismic Profiling (Tulsa, Oklahoma, 1974). As the method has become more familiar, it has attracted growing interest outside the USSR This has been substantiated by the special seminar on VSP (Oklahoma, 1979) which was organized for 22 U. S. companies and universities and presented by the author.

Book excerpt: Analysis of crosswell and three-component seismic data integrated with well logs have produced information on the distribution of subsurface heterogeneities below the In-Tank Precipitation facility at the Savannah River Site (SRS). The travel time P-wave tomogram and reflection imaging delineate lateral and vertical structural details of the formations. In particular, the high-resolution P-wave tomogram captures a low-velocity zone within the carbonates. This zone is surrounded by reflection events between depths of 150 and 200 ft. in the reflection imaging. The reflections are caused by the acoustic impedance contrast between the low velocity zone of 'soupy' sand mixtures of unconsolidated materials and the more rigid and dense competent surrounded medium. The time-frequency analysis of full waveforms particle velocity identifies guided waves in form of leaky and normal modes at the depths of about 138 to 150 ft. This resulting change in lithology associated with the presence of guided waves is consistent with a velocity low observed in the vertical velocity profile determined from the inversion of three-component seismic data. This low-velocity zone intercepted by the wells H-BOR-34 and H-BOR-50 correlates with the conductive Griffins Landing Member, which is located above the carbonates. The result of the experiments demonstrate that the present high-resolution crosswell seismic measurement technique (using frequencies up to 1500 Hz) meets the resolution requirements to map geological and geotechnical targets in the vicinity of the In-Tank Precipitation facility at the Savannah River Site.
