Book excerpt: Ambient observation of magnetic domain structures by magnetic force microscopy (MFM) in La{sub 0.67}Sr{sub 0.33}MnO3 films has not yet been clearly correlated with stresses induced by kinetic or thermodynamic growth processes or the compressive (LaAlO3) or tensile (SrTiO3) nature of the film-substrate lattice mismatch. Although domain-like magnetic structures have been seen in some as-grown films and related to substrate-induced stress and film thickness, no magnetic structure has been seen for other films grown under similar conditions on the same pair of substrates. In this study the authors have grown films over a range of temperatures by pulsed-laser deposition, using the above substrates, to determine the relationship between growth and stress-induced magnetic structures. Results from scanning tunneling, atomic force, and magnetic force microscopies, measurements of temperature-dependent magnetization and structure-dependent coercivity show the relationship between growth and magnetic properties. Maze-like domain structures, with separations between 150 nm and 200 nm, were only observed for the thicker films grown at the highest temperature, 800 C. Application of an in-plane magnetic field converted these domain structures to stripe-like domains whose spacing and out of plane component decreased as the field was increased.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growth of LaMnO3 films that exhibit colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) has concentrated heavily on Ca doped materials. However, since the 33% Sr doped films are ferromagnetic at room temperature, they are ideal candidates for dual growth-magnetic structure studies using scanned probe techniques. In this study, interest was focused on the relations between growth/processing parameters, film morphology, and electronic/magnetic properties. In addition, films were grown on both LaAlO3 (LAO) and SrTiO3 (STO) to examine the results of stress induced by different substrate mismatches. La{sub 0.67}Sr{sub 0.33}MnO3 (LSMO) was grown using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) at temperatures between 500 C and 800 C. The film microstructure, crystallinity, and magnetic and electrical properties were characterized by room temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), magnetic force microscopy (MFM), x-ray diffraction, and temperature dependent transport and magnetization measurements. The growth trends follow those previously reported for Ca doped films. Grains increase in size with increasing temperature and coalesce into extended layers after annealing. Although topographic contributions complicate interpretation of some MFM data, local magnetic structure observed here is generally associated with film defects.

Book excerpt: This work studies the control of the magnetic and magnetotransport properties of La{sub 0.67}Sr{sub 0.33}MnO3 thin films through strain engineering. The strain state is characterized by the tetragonal distortion (c/a ratio), which can be varied continuously between a compressive strain of 1.005 to a tensile strain of 0.952 by changing the type of substrate, the growth rate, and the presence of an underlying La{sub 0.67}Sr{sub 0.33}FeO3 buffer layer. Increasing tensile tetragonal distortion of the La{sub 0.67}Sr{sub 0.33}MnO3 thin film decreases the saturation magnetization, changes the temperature dependence of the resistivity and magnetoresistance, and increases the resistivity by several orders of magnitude.

Book excerpt: The influence of epitaxial strain, in the form of tetragonal distortions, on the magnetic and magnetotransport properties of La{sub 0.67}Sr{sub 0.33}MnO3 thin films was studied. The tetragonal distortion (c/a ratio) was modulated through the choice of the substrate, ranging from c/a=1.007 on (001)-oriented (LaAlO3){sub 0.3}(Sr2AlTaO6){sub 0.7} substrates to 0.952 on (110)-oriented GdScO3 substrates. In agreement with previous theoretical predictions, these large values of tensile strain cause the Curie temperature and the saturation magnetization to decrease, alter the temperature dependence of the resistivity and magnetoresistance, and increase the resistivity several orders of magnitude.

Book excerpt: We have probed the nature of magnetism at the surface of (001), (110) and (111)-oriented La{sub 0.7}Sr{sub 0.3}MnO3 thin films. The spin polarization of La{sub 0.7}Sr{sub 0.3}MnO3 thin films is not intrinsically suppressed at all surfaces and interfaces but is highly sensitive to both the epitaxial strain state as well as the substrate orientation. Through the use of soft x-ray spectroscopy, the magnetic properties of (001), (110) and (111)-oriented La{sub 0.7}Sr{sub 0.3}MnO3/SrTiO3 interfaces have been investigated and compared to bulk magnetometry and resistivity measurements. The magnetization of (110) and (111)-oriented La{sub 0.7}Sr{sub 0.3}MnO3/SrTiO3 interfaces are more bulk-like as a function of thickness whereas the magnetization at the (001)-oriented La{sub 0.7}Sr{sub 0.3}MnO3/SrTiO3 interface is suppressed significantly below a layer thickness of 20 nm. Such findings are correlated with the biaxial strain state of the La{sub 0.7}Sr{sub 0.3}MnO3 films; for a given film thickness it is the tetragonal distortion of (001) La{sub 0.7}Sr{sub 0.3}MnO3 that severely impacts the magnetization, whereas the trigonal distortion for (111)-oriented films and monoclinic distortion for (110)-oriented films have less of an impact. These observations provide evidence that surface magnetization and thus spin polarization depends strongly on the crystal surface orientation as well as epitaxial strain.

A systematic series with various thicknesses of La{sub 0.7}Sr{sub 0.3}MnO3 was used to establish a phase diagram - which showed a clear difference compared to films grown on SrTiO3 substrates, highlighting the importance of film thickness and substrate strain. At 8 unit cells, the boundary between the metallic and insulating ground states, a second abrupt metal-insulator transition was observed at low temperatures, which could be tuned with by magnetic field, and is interpreted as a signature of electronic phase separation.

Book excerpt: My project explored the impact of temperature and annealing on the optical constants of La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) films grown on a lanthanum aluminate (LAO) substrate. This was done with infrared and optical spectroscopy, which allows us to measure the complex dielectric function of the material. Both the substrate and the film-substrate system have been modeled in order to closely examine the properties of annealed and unannealed LSMO. The Jahn-Teller energy splitting was measured, and an additional feature in the unannealed film conductivity allowed the Hund's coupling energy to be deduced directly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microstructural features and magnetic behavior of epitaxially grown SmCo thin films with very high in-plane anisotropy are presented. Transmission electron microscopy was used to characterize the microstructure while magnetic measurements were performed using dc and SQUID magnetometers. Two substrate orientations were studied, i.e., MgO(100)/Cr(100)/SmCo(11{bar 2}0) and MgO(110)/Cr(211)/SmCo(1{bar 1}00). In the former, the SmCo(11{bar 2}0) film shows a bicrystalline microstructure, whereas in the latter, a uniaxial one is observed. Both microstructure consist of grains with a mixture of SmCo3, Sm2Co-- and SmCo3 polytypoids. A deviation from the c-axes was observed in the in-plane anisotropy of the SmCo(11{bar 2}0) thin film. A strong exchange interaction between the grains would, in principle, explain the observed deviation. On the other hand, both SmCo(11{bar 2}0) and (1{bar 1}00) thin films show very high coercivity values with pinning-type characteristics. Possible coercivity mechanisms related to intergranular exchange interactions and local variation in magnetocrystalline anisotropy constants are discussed.
