Book excerpt: In recent decades, there has been an increase in the development of strategies for water ecosystem mapping and monitoring. Overall, this is primarily due to legislative efforts to improve the quality of water bodies and oceans. Remote sensing has played a key role in the development of such approaches—from the use of drones for vegetation mapping to autonomous vessels for water quality monitoring. Within the specific context of vegetation characterization, the wide range of available observations—from satellite imagery to high-resolution drone aerial imagery—has enabled the development of monitoring and mapping strategies at multiple scales (e.g., micro- and mesoscales). This Special Issue, entitled “Novel Advances in Aquatic Vegetation Monitoring in Ocean, Lakes and Rivers”, collates recent advances in remote sensing-based methods applied to ocean, river, and lake vegetation characterization, including seaweed, kelp, submerged and emergent vegetation, and floating-leaf and free-floating plants. A total of six manuscripts have been compiled in this Special Issue, ranging from area mapping substrates in riverine environments to the identification of macroalgae in marine environments. The work presented leverages current state-of-the-art methods for aquatic vegetation monitoring and will spark further research within this field.

Book excerpt: Submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) plays a significant role in many aquatic systems, and impacts both physical and ecological quantities. It can baffle currents, attenuate waves, recycle nitrogen and phosphorus from the sediment bed, perform ecosystem function as a primary producer, and provide critical habitat for many aquatic species. Conversely, the invasive SAV, Egeria densa (Brazilian waterweed), in the San Francisco Bay & Delta has been a nuisance since its introduction into the system in the 1960s. It has displaced most of the native submersed aquatic plant species in the Delta and restructured the ecosystem, thus threatening the survival of several endangered native fishes such as Delta Smelt. Its impacts on the ecological system remain largely unknown and the need for assessment is growing. This multi-interdisciplinary study, incorporating biogeochemistry, hydrodynamics, and numerical computing and field survey data, accomplishes two main goals. The first goal is to develop a new SAV model imbedded into the unstructured-grid SCHISM-ICM framework. in addition to the advantages of directly simulating the SAV impact on hydrodynamics using high-resolution unstructured grids, this new SAV model can also simulate the competition between SAV and phytoplankton for light and nutrient supplies. The second goal is to apply the new model to Cache Slough Complex, Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, to estimate the impact on the water quality from intervening SAV removal. Removal of SAV is already being studied in Little Hastings Tract and this study can serve to develop hypotheses for monitoring and ultimately guidance for managing SAV removal in the Bay-Delta region. We benchmark the new SAV model with the tests on the SAV biomass, growth and impacts on light supply and nutrient budget in the water column and sediment bed, respectively. Starting from a uniform biomass distribution, we simulate the evolution of biomass over seasonal scales and validate the calculated distribution with the observed distribution. The model is able to successfully simulate the SAV die-off process in areas where it is known to be unable to colonize. By applying the fully coupled SCHISM-ICM-SAV model in the Cache Slough Complex area, the changes of the water quality state variables due to SAV are estimated over spatial and seasonal scales. Generally, SAV increases the accumulation of phytoplankton by locally reducing flushing and thus increasing the residence time, but in the meantime, reduces its local growth rate due to light shading and nutrient competition. A combination of direct impact from SAV and indirect impact through changed phytoplankton results in changes in other water quality variables: dissolved oxygen and nutrients. SAV tends to increase oxygen and organic nutrients while decreasing inorganic nutrients. For this system, the feedback loop from SAV to the hydrodynamics plays the most important role in the water quality variables among all feedback loops.

Book excerpt: "Aquatic vegetation is a critical component of freshwater ecosystems, providing habitat for small fish and invertebrates, stabilizing sediments, altering flow regimes, and improving water quality. Vegetation communities are, however, facing new and escalating pressures due to climate change and increased human disturbances. Monitoring and managing these ecosystems are therefore vital if the services aquatic plants afford are to be maintained. Remote sensing has been suggested as a preferred method to monitor these habitats, but the technology hasn't yet seen extensive implementation particularly to submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) in the freshwater context. The goal of this thesis is to facilitate the application of remote sensing techniques to SAV monitoring through both information transfer and filling in foundational knowledge gaps in the field. A systematic literature review was conducted of previous work in SAV monitoring using remote sensing, which was synthesized with relevant general principles of remote sensing, to create a resource for ecosystem managers and ecological researchers unfamiliar with the discipline. This resource provides an overview of all aspects of a typical optical remote sensing workflow, concentrating on applications to SAV monitoring, to instruct non-specialists in whether and how to adopt remote sensing as a research method. The majority of previous work focused on coastal systems and primarily on determining community extent. While these applications did produce moderate to good results, the narrow scope of the data precludes many critical ecosystem management and research questions from being answered. For this reason, original research was undertaken to implement optical remote sensing techniques to a larger range of targets in a non-ideal (i.e., freshwater) environment. This work assessed the spectral separability of targets under laboratory conditions at various grouping levels (i.e., species to kingdom, vegetation/non-vegetation), under multiple sampling conditions, and modelled across spectral resolutions. In situ imagery was additionally analyzed to compare the expected modelled accuracy to what is possible under field conditions. Samples from thirteen species of SAV were collected across two seasons and were found to be spectrally separable (leave-one-out nearest neighbour criterion of 0.8 to 1 depending on grouping) during the peak of the growing season. Spectral separability depended directly on the spectral resolution and number of bands of the sensor chosen. Airborne hyperspectral imagery was effective with individual class recall of up to 100%, and overall recalls of 88% and 94% when detecting vegetation types and between vegetation or non-vegetation, respectively. Image analysis was limited to targets of canopy-forming or carpeting vegetation and large unvegetated patches due to the ~ 1 m spatial resolution. The targets present in this freshwater ecosystem would be conducive to mapping and monitoring using remote sensing techniques, however, imagery of the spatial and spectral resolution required for such applications is expensive and not widely available. Development of targeted and sufficiently high-spatial resolution sensors aboard space-borne platforms should therefore be prioritized if aquatic vegetation is to be effectively monitored at the regional to global scales"--
